COLOUR GRADING IS THE PROCESS OF FIXING AND/OR
ENHANCING DIGITAL VIDEO IMAGERY BY GRADES.
IT’S CALLED COLOUR GRADING AS THIS PROCESS IS DONE
GRADUALLY OR BY GRADES (LAYERS)
COLOUR GRADING IS SPECIFICALLY CORRECTING
UNDEREXPOSED SHOTS, OVEREXPOSED SHOTS, SHOTS
WITH AN OVERLY STRONG COLOUR CAST, MIS-MATCHED
SHOTS AND SHOTS THAT NEED A STYLISED COLOUR
GRADE.
9. COLOUR
COLOUR: also commonly known as hue
SATURATION: the intensity or richness of a colour
EXPOSURE: the brightness of the colour
10. Controls on the Colour Board
SHADOWS: the darkest areas of the image
HIGHLIGHTS: the brightest areas of the image
MIDTONES: everything else in between the highlights
and the shadows
GLOBAL: this is all of the areas of the image

13. KEY-FRAMING
KEY FRAMES ARE POINTS THAT MARK WHERE CHANGES IN
ANIMATION, VOLUME, OPACITY OR EFFECTS ARE MADE.
ALMOST ANY AUDIO OR VIDEO EFFECT IN FINAL CUT PRO X
CAN BE AUTOMATED WITH KEY FRAMES
MOVE THE PLAYHEAD TO WHERE YOU WANT THE ANIMATION
OR AUTOMATION TO START.
ADD A NEW KEYFRAME. MOVE THE PLAYHEAD TO THE NEXT
POINT WHERE YOU WANT A CHANGE TO BE MADE.
MAKE THE CHANGE AND NOTICE A NEW KEY FRAME HAS
BEEN ADDED AT THAT POINT.

15. GREEN SCREEN (CHROMA KEY)
In graphics and digital video editing programs, chroma key is a
function that renders a specific colour in a layer transparent. In
television and film, it's the technique of using a monochromatic
background for the purpose of replacing it with a different image or
scene in post-production. In the film industry it's called GREEN
SCREEN.

LAYER THE GREEN SCREEN FILE ABOVE THE FILE YOU
WANT TO BLEND IT WITH.
NAVIGATE TO THE EFFECTS TAB AND CLICK KEYING.
DRAG THE KEYER EFFECT ONTO THE GREEN SCREEN CLIP
USE TRANSFORM TO ADJUST THE SIZE AND POSITION OF
THE GREEN SCREEN LAYER.
USE KEY FRAMES TO ANIMATE THE GREEN SCREEN LAYER
IF YOU WANT IT TO MOVE.
17. IMPORT “BILL LIGHTSABER” INTO FCPX
ADD “BILL LIGHTSABER” TO THE TIMELINE
CHOOSE A LIGHTSABER COLOUR AND ADD IT TO THE SECONDARY
TIMELINE (ABOVE THE PRIMARY)
CLICK ON TRANSFORM AND ADJUST THE SIZE AND ANGLE OF THE
LIGHTSABER SO IT COVERS THE POLE IN THE FIRST FRAME
USE THE DIRECTION KEYS TO MOVE ALONG ONE OR TWO FRAMES
AT A TIME AND ADJUST THE LIGHTSABER
IT’S A SLOW AND TEDIOUS PROCESS BUT THE RESULTS ARE
WORTH THE WAIT!
18. IMPORT “BILL GUN” INTO FCPX
ADD “BILL GUN” TO THE TIMELINE
CROP AND KEY OUT THE BACKGROUND
ADD THE BULLET GREEN SCREEN VIDEO TO THE TIMELINE ABOVE
USE TRANSFORM TO POSITION THE BULLET OVER THE GUN AS IT
FIRES.
USE RETIME TO SLOW DOWN THE ORIGINAL FOOTAGE
ADD THE BACKGROUND AND USE COLOUR CORRECTION TO
BLEND BILL WITH THE BACKGROUND.

IMPORT THE SOUND DESIGN FOLDER
ADD THE ANIMATION WITH NO SOUND TO THE TIMELINE
BROWSE THE SOUND EFFECTS AND ADD THE ONES YOU WANT
TO THE TIMELINE.
USE THE BLADE TOOL AND THE FADE OPTIONS TO
MANIPULATE YOUR AUDIO
FINALLY, BROWSE THE AUDIO EFFECTS BROWSER AND ADD
EXTRA EFFECTS TO YOUR AUDIO.
