The FAST Act was passed in December 2015 with bipartisan support to reauthorize federal transportation funding through 2020. It provides $305 billion for transportation over 5 years, an increase from the previous bill. However, the gas tax has not been raised since 1993 and FAST Act revenues will only cover about $41 billion per year, leaving a $20 billion annual shortfall that is covered by one-time offsets. While FAST Act provides some increased and stable short-term funding, the federal role in transportation beyond 2020 remains unclear as the gas tax does not raise sufficient revenues and alternatives to increase funding have been unsuccessful.
