In 1898, the U.S. helped Cuba gain its freedom from Spain through war, in part because of American beliefs in freedom but also because the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, which newspapers blamed on Spain. The U.S. then defeated Spanish forces in key battles in Cuba and the Philippines, and Spain was forced to surrender control over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines in the Treaty of Paris signed on December 10, 1898.

Depression and poor mental health can significantly impact work productivity and performance. A 1990 study found that individuals with major depression had a 4.78 times greater risk of disability days compared to asymptomatic individuals, while those with minor depression had a 1.55 times greater risk. Minor depression was associated with more total disability days in the community than major depression due to its higher prevalence. The study concludes that the threshold for identifying clinically significant depression may need to be lowered to include individuals with fewer symptoms but still measurable negative impacts. Only by changing diagnostic classifications can the true societal burden of depression be adequately addressed.

1) Two caches of royal mummies and funerary equipment were discovered in Egypt in 1881 - one at Deir el-Bahri known as the Royal Cache, and one in KV35.
2) Gaston Maspero, the director of the antiquities service, had been investigating the trade of illegal antiquities which led him to two brothers who were tomb robbers. After questioning, one of the brothers revealed the location of the Royal Cache.
3) The cache contained over 40 coffins and mummies belonging mainly to the family of pharaoh Pinudjem II from the 21st dynasty. Most of the mummies and coffins showed signs of damage from ancient tomb robber
