5. Warm-Up
4a. What is the degree of the following polynomial?
4x2y2 + 12xy2 - 2y2 + 2 x5 - 5x3 + 3y4x2 + xy + 15
4b. Arange the above polynomial in descending order.
5. Solve: 600 x 10-3
Is it... 3/5? Is it... 6/10? Is it .6? Is it... 6 x 10-1?
6. Polynomials
Because there are different types of polynomials (mono, bi,
and poly), and various operations which can be performed
on them (+, -, *, /), there are many possible combinations.
Fortunately, there isn't a different rule for every combination.
The rules are few, but important. Please write them down
when given and keep them neat, organized, and easy to find
in your notebook. You will need to be reminded for awhile.
7. Polynomials
Adding & Subtracting Polynomials
We will look at applying basic addition and subtraction to
any type of polynomial. The rule is the same for all types.
And it is... Only like terms can be added or subtracted.
Example 1: (x + 1) + (x2 + x) = x2 + 2x + 1
Example 2: (4x4 + 2x + 11) + (-3x2 + x) + (x4 - 2)= 5x4 - 3x2 + 3x +9
Example 3: (3x2 - 2x + 10) - (-3x2 +3x + 1) = 6x2 - 5x +9
