Cour se Descr iption:
This cour se examines the political, philosophical, and histor ical r oots
of per suasion in contempor ar y Amer ican cultur e. It pr oposes a
r hetor ical per spective towar d per suasion that invites cr itical
r eflection on the r elationship amongst language, power , and cultur e.
In this cour se, per suasion is defined as a social, mediated pr actice
capable of addr essing and cr eating (social and ethical) tensions in
both public and pr ivate life. This cour se ex plor es those tensions by
r elying on examples fr om popular cultur e, including but not limited
to: political speeches, film, television ser ies, music videos and other
mediated for ms of communication. By dr awing connections
per suasive pr actices and ever yday life, this cour se encour ages
students to integr ate theor etical concepts by positioning themselves
as par ticipants in the cultur e of ar gumentation.
