Project Background
What is Bikeshare?
A network of bicycles
distributed around an
area that allow short,
one-way trips from one
location to another.
A cost-effective mobility
option for trips too far to
walk, but not long
enough to take transit or
drive.
Think of it as another
form of transit
A relatively inexpensive
and quick
implementation
extension to local public
transportation offerings

Project Background
• Fairfax County awarded a Transportation and
Land Use Connections (TLC) grant from the
Metropolitan Washington Council of
Governments (MWCOG)
• Funded a feasibility study of starting a bikeshare
system in Reston
• Two public meetings, stakeholder interviews,
data analysis of current and future development

Feasibility Study
• Identified an initial system
of 13
stations and 130 bicycles
• System designed around hubs
of
Wiehle-Reston East Metro
and
Reston Town Center
• Have reduced size of some
stations to increase # of
stations

Choosing a System
• Staff from Fairfax County Transportation,
Community Revitalization, and Planning &
Zoning teamed up to examine next steps
towards implementation

Staff Review
• Investigate different bikeshare suppliers
and operators
• Discuss potential funding sources and
strategy for capital and operating funding
• Determine how stations could affect any
zoning and site plan issues
• Continue conversations with existing
Capital Bikeshare partners on future plans

Choosing Capital Bikeshare!
• Joining a system integrated with the region
is best for long run success and growth
• Best option for system starting in Reston
and expanding countywide
• Begin process of finalizing station locations,
engineering feasibility, discussing process
to join regional contract

Bikeshare to Tysons
• In late 2015 FCDOT was approached by
the Tysons Partnership about the possibility
of bringing Capital Bikeshare to Tysons
• At the time, it was on FCDOT’s radar, but
no funding plan or station siting work had
been done
• Tysons Partnership said they were willing to
help out with both tasks

• Tysons Partnership willing to contribute
funding and help secure private partners for
station locations
• $10,000 per station for 5 years

Current Tasks
• Finalize station locations and sizes
– Continuing to work with VDOT and private property
owners on final stations
• Start construction on completed stations to build
concrete pads
• Stations ordered in April, delivery expected in
September
• Sign contract and start marketing activities

Next Steps
• Sign operations and maintenance contract with
Motivate, Inc.
• Sign up memberships!
• Install stations once received and assembled
• Launch
• FCDOT has additional TAP Grant money for
Reston to expand in the near term and long term

System Start Date
• Timeline still conceptual
• Station equipment was ordered on time,
waiting for delivery confirmation before
finalizing system start date
• Want to start system at right time when
people are active and outside!

Future of Bikeshare in
Fairfax County
• Initial system of 30 stations/224 bikes
• Potential to grow with Silver Line Phase II
to connect Reston Town Center Station
and Herndon Station
• Growth into surrounding neighborhoods
and village centers
• Expansion to Merrifield, Huntington, etc…
