Appreciation of Music LO1 worksheet
Use this worksheet to help gather information in relation to your presentation. Keep
it brief, and make sure this is uploaded to your Mahara page by the end of class.
A: Identify six genres of music which you have studied within
your listening journals.
 GOSPEL
 JAZZ
 FOLK
 RAGTIME
 COUNTRY
 ROCKABILLY
B: Describe 2 key musical features from two of these
genres.
Genre – ROCKABILLY
Musical Feature 1 - Guitar Rhythm
Genre – FOLK
Musical Feature 2 - Guitar Rhythm plucking
C: Describe a way in which each of these musical features
has developed over time.
TIP: Think about the development in musical playing style,
musical instruments/technology etc.
Development of musical feature 1 – Guitar rhythm in Rockabilly moved away
from acoustic (a hangover from country blues) to electric, and more of a quasi
of beat rhythm, the base is very much a highlight, with drumming rhythm with
sticks on the rim, making for a clicking rhythm sound. Also the way the chords
were structured were more blues oriented than country which has more broken
chords and fingering down.
Development of musical feature 2 – Guitar rhythm plucking as in folk, can be
divergent and can change with the tempo, and be it country folk or traditional
folk, it has developed over many hundreds of years. In its modern use and the
folk revival Pete Seeger has different plucking styles at his disposal, as has
Bob Dylan, who moved with the times as they were changing.
D: Name 3 individuals or groups who have contributed to the
genres you named in question B
1 – Wanda Jackson
2 - Rockpile
3 – Tim Buckley
E: Describe how each of these artists contributed to the
genre.
TIP: You may wish to consider topics such as popularity,
significant album releases or developments in musical style.
Artist 1 – Wanda Jackson is known as the queen of ROCKABILLY and even
today plays at Rockabilly festivals. Initially a hillbilly country artist until she met
a certain Elvis Presley who encouraged her to sing more up-beat Rhythm &
Blues style he was gyrating to called Rockabilly. She had a unique vocal style
that lent itself to Rock and Roll perfectly, famous for “Hard-Headed Woman”
she influenced later singers like Janis Joplin and Suzi Quatro.
Artist 2 – Rockpile was a 70s band influenced by Rockabilly fronted by Dave
Edmunds who would discover and produce successful Rockabilly/Punk bands
Stray Cats and Polecats. Although they had 4 albums 3 were recorded under
the solo artist name. Not a great commercial success, however they made a
small dent in the charts with “Teacher, Teacher” in 1980.
Artist 3 – Although starting with a folk influence in his early album, Tim Buckley
was a musician and songwriter of varied styles, often introducing new
instruments into the mix, from Folk Rock, Jazz/Blues-Rock, Psychedelia, Soul,
Funk and back again, with a vocal range from baritone to falsetto, and fused
these to make 9 studio albums during his short career. Song To The Siren
was perhaps his most well-known being covered by other artists which was
more of commercial song. His lyrics reflected the times and bore some
political statement. He died at only 28 due to a drugs overdose.
F: Name another genre of music which you have studied.
(Mersey)Beat Music or British Beat
G: Describe 2 key musical features of this third genre.
Musical feature 1 – Rhythm Guitar: has more of a profound use in Beat Music
which is closely follows the drum beat. It can be staccato or at other times
smooth flowing it can dominate the music as much as the lead riff in a song.
Musical feature 2 – Drums: Closely follows the 4 on the every beat of the bar
sometimes rather than on the offbeat. This derives from the driving pace a
band was put through during gigs in Hamburg, Germany where many made
their first break, and were forced to Mach Schau! – Make A Show.
H: Describe a way in which each of these musical features
have developed over time.
TIP: You may wish to consider topics such as developments
in musical playing style or developments in musical
equipment.
Development of feature 1 – Rhythm guitar is important in a band and is
responsible for keeping dancer’s on the floor, this has proved true in different
genre’s from the 50s through 80s, until the synth took over.
Development of feature 2 - Ringo was into using his snare and hi-hat
extensively especially in songs such as She Loves You and Can’t Buy Me
Love. Later developments in the late 60s Progressive Rock, the drumming
became more sophisticated with lots of fills and rolls.
I: Name 3 individuals or groups who have contributed to the
genre you named in question F.
THE BEATLES
THE SEARCHERS
THE SWINGING BLUE JEANS
J: Describe how each of these 3 artists or groups have
contributed to the genre.
THE BEATLES - The Beatles influence is felt through the generations. They came
together from 1957-59 playing first Skiffle, and from 1960 onward influenced by
Rockabilly, Rock & Roll, although they took on many styles when they had to expand
their repertoire during long hours playing in Hamburg, Germany. They then found
fame, and matured moving into different realms of possibilities like Folk, Psychedelia
& Progressive Rock. Also the song writing talent of Lennon & McCartney is renowned
the world over. The Beat music of the early to mid 60’s was a hard shuffle beat not
just on the back beat but on every beat of 4/4 common time, especially from
Liverpool, along with pulsating bass lines & close harmony's.
THE SEARCHERS – Also from Liverpool but hailing from a different club called
“The Iron Door” and also played in Hamburg. They secured a recording
contract after sending a polished set performance to record executives. They
were able to follow up their success in Britain with a hit in America with “Sugar
& Spice” in 1964, 6 UK top5 hits with 3 at no.1 position, along with top selling
albums. They had tight vocal harmony, and had the smooth guitar rhythm up
front. They attempted to move with the times in later years but losing key
members and contract expiry halted the bands progress. However they had
staying power despite member shake ups and retired in 2018.
THE SWINGING BLUE JEANS – Also from Liverpool and like The Searchers
secured a hit in the U.S with “The Hippy Hippy Shake” which was a No.1 in the
UK, while making a sizable 24 in the U.S.A. Other notable hits were “Good
Golly Miss Molly” a Little Richard classic Rock cover, which got placed at
No.11, and You’re No Good at No.2 in the UK charts. They had only just made
the grade along with their fellow Liverpudlian’s. They too suffered from
changes, and in the end their taste of fame faded. Apparently they started out
as a Jazz band in their early days.

TIP: Think about the development in musical playing style, musical instruments/technology etc. Development of musical feature 1 – Guitar rhythm in Rockabilly moved away from acoustic (a hangover from country blues) to electric, and more of a quasi of beat rhythm, the base is very much a highlight, with drumming rhythm with sticks on the rim, making for a clicking rhythm sound. Also the way the chords were structured were more blues oriented than country which has more broken chords and fingering down. Development of musical feature 2 – Guitar rhythm plucking as in folk, can be divergent and can change with the tempo, and be it country folk or traditional folk, it has developed over many hundreds of years. However they had staying power despite member shake ups and retired in 2018. THE SWINGING BLUE JEANS – Also from Liverpool and like The Searchers secured a hit in the U.S with “The Hippy Hippy Shake” which was a No.1 in the UK, while making a sizable 24 in the U.S.A. Other notable hits were “Good Golly Miss Molly” a Little Richard classic Rock cover, which got placed at No.11, and You’re No Good at No.2 in the UK charts.
