1. • As society advances, agriculture plays a
crucial role in life sustenance. With
advanced technology, the mortality rate
drops, leading to a more populated society.
To feed this population, research and
development programs focus on increasing
food production and quality nutrition. This
module discusses crop protection, pests,
and various disciplines related to crop
protection, highlighting its economic
importance and potential damage.
WORLD OF POPULATION AND FOOD SUPPLY
2. The Current World Population and Food
Supply
• The world's population is growing at a rate of 1.05% per year, with an
average increase of 81 million people per year. This growth often
leads to increased demand for food, causing chronic hunger among
one in seven people. Factors such as agricultural policies, commodity
prices, and economic development significantly impact food security
despite the availability of enough food for all.

4. Movement towards Global Food Security
• The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts a doubling of global
food demand by 2050 due to population and economic growth. Addressing
the health needs of families in developing countries, including increased
access to family planning, can help slow population growth, improve family
health, and enhance food security. In 2020, between 720 and 811 million
people faced hunger, with Africa having the highest proportion of hunger.
Moderate or severe food insecurity has been rising globally, with nearly
one in three people not having access to adequate food in 2020. The UN
Food Systems Summit, set to occur later this year, will bring forward
concrete actions to address these challenges and build better food systems.
Addressing these issues is crucial for achieving global food security by
2030.

6. Role of Crop Protection in Increasing Food
Supply
• Governments worldwide can support a transformation of the world’s
food systems to provide decent livelihoods for small-scale producers
in developing countries. Crop protection products, such as pesticides,
play a vital role in controlling pests and diseases that threaten our
food supply. Despite modern crop protection products, 20-40% of
potential food production is lost annually to pests. The use of
chemical crop protection is highly regulated, ensuring safety for users,
consumers, and the environment.
