The Europeans explored for religious, economic, and personal reasons. They explored to spread Christianity ("God"), gain prestige and wealth ("Glory, Gold"), satisfy their curiosity during the Humanism period, acquire valuable resources ("Materialism"), compete with other European powers ("Competition"), and allow individuals to achieve fame and fortune ("Individual"). They also explored to expand their knowledge of the world and viewed non-European peoples as less advanced.
