Exercise Science Philosophy
Today’s world is crippled with countless diseases and health problems that
are only on the rise. The solution that many people use for these problems is the
next best drug or surgery, two things that often lead to different problems a person
did not even have before. These powerful drugs can have painful side effects and
these invasive surgeries involve high health risks. In this costly society, these things
only add to the expenses. I believe that the people of this world need to change their
mindset about the health care system. One thing that I believe is essential to this
change: prevention. Exercise is the key to turning the health of today’s world
around. As a future exercise professional there are four things that are central to my
belief system: 1) the importance of a healthy lifestyle 2) helping others improve
their health and reach their goals 3) being a role model for my clients 4) positive
mentality.
The human body is capable of amazing things if we set it up for success. It has
a separate system devoted to keeping it running properly. How well this system
runs is dependent upon how well we take care of our bodies. We can do this simply
by exercising and eating healthy. Eating whole and natural foods reduces many
factors that lead to disease, while increasing mood in the process. Exercise has the
same effect to an even greater degree. It is no secret that this is the answer for
increased health and reduced disease. Why then, does obesity consume our world?
The answer to this lies in the amount of cheap and very accessible food that is
detrimental to our health and lack of consistent exercise. From this idea stems my
belief in the importance of a healthy life style. It is a vital part of the crucial change
that the health care system needs. Healthy diet and exercise reduces the risk for
almost all diseases and therefore is a huge preventative measure. I believe that it is
my job to spread this idea to help change the minds of as many people as possible to
help create a healthier society.
Attempting to create a healthier society leads me into my second central idea
as a future exercise science professional: helping others improve their health and
reach their goals. For many years, I have aspired to enter a field where it is my
responsibility to help people. The area of study I have chosen will allow me to do
this. Sharing my knowledge of exercise and encouraging a healthy life style is one
way I plan to do this. Others ways include helping my clients figure out what their
strengths are and what their limitations are, and then helping them to exceed those
limitations. Through previous jobs and volunteer work I have had the opportunity
to watch people of all ages improve in countless different areas. This has been
something that has brought me immense joy over many years and is why it is
essential to my components as a future exercise science professional.
Being an important part to a patient’s transformation leads me to my next
central belief: being a role model for my clients. I have looked up to many people
throughout my life. Whether the atmosphere was sports, home, academic, or social,
there have been people that have positively influenced me to reach my goals and full
potential. Now it is time for me to be a role model for those around me, especially
those with whom I am working. Prescribing exercises and encouraging a healthy
diet will be an important part to my profession. Therefore, if I want clients that are
motived and listen well, I believe it is my job to be an example of someone who leads
a healthy lifestyle. Exercise has been a part of my life since I was a young child.
Gymnastics played a major role in my life for more than fifteen years and taught me
discipline and the importance of a healthy body. I have carried that with me and
now use it as something on which to center the rest of my life and career.
Finally, I believe having a positive mentality is crucial to all aspects of life,
especially exercise. Having a positive mentality improves your mood and makes
your goals reachable. It is not only good diet and exercise that contribute to a
healthy life, but it is also a healthy mind. As a future exercise science professional, I
will encourage all of my patients to have a strong positive mind. If my clients want
to reach certain goals and believe in themselves, they will be able to reach their
goals. Positivity goes a long way. If more people are positive and mentally strong, I
believe that will have a positive effect on the mental state of the entire community.
In conclusion, exercise is crucial to the health of every person on this planet.
My hope is to be a role model and a leader for the clients I work with by being an
example of a mentally strong individual who centers her life on exercise and a
healthy diet. A bigger goal of mine that goes beyond an individual patient is to
influence exercise as a form of prevention within the healthcare system in an
attempt to decrease things like chronic diseases and cancer. I will use my new found
knowledge to be a patient centered health care provider who integrates positive
mental health into my care and is dedicated to every person with whom I work.
