• The overall objective of the AfDB Group is

individually and collectively, by promoting

projects and programs designed to reduce
poverty and improve living conditions.
Combating poverty is at the heart of the
Bank’s efforts to assist the continent to
attain sustainable economic growth.

5. STRUCTURE
Over the years, the Bank Group has continued to
pursue its institutional reforms aimed at maximizing its
development effectiveness and the quality of its
operations, supporting efforts by its regional member
countries and building their capacity to strengthen their
economies.
The Bank has also consolidated its role as the continent's
premier development finance institution, a knowledge
and research centre and the preeminent voice for
African development issues. For purposes of
accountability and efficient management, the Bank has
adopted the following structure comprising six vice
presidential complexes.

6. AFDB’S PROJECTS IN ZIMBABWE AND
RECENT ACTIVITIES
1. Leadership role in arrears clearance, debt
relief and the overall re-engagement
process
The Bank Group has taken a leadership role in the
process of re-engagement by mobilizing the friends
of Zimbabwe group, which includes creditors and
development partners, to garner support for the
country on financing in general and debt relief
in particular.

7. Emergency Power Infrastructure
Rehabilitation Project Phase II
The Emergency Power Infrastructure Rehabilitation
Project Phase II (EPIRP II) is the second energy sector
project financed through the African Development
Bank administered Zimbabwe Multi-Donor Trust Fund
(Zim-Fund). Its objective is to improve the availability
and reliability of electricity supply through the
rehabilitation of generation, transmission and
distribution facilities. The project target areas are
Kwekwe, Gweru, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Mutare, Harare
and Hwange with a combined target population of 4.13
million people

8. Lake Harvest Aquaculture Expansion
Project
This project aims to increase Lake Harvest’s
tilapia production and processing capacity
from 2,200 tons per annum in 2010 to 20,000
tons per annum by 2015, create employment
and enhance tax revenues. Beyond its direct
investment in Lake Harvest, the Bank Group
has supported Zimbabwe’s private sector
through its partnership with regional financial
institutions that operate and invest in Zimbabwe.

9. AfDB to fund Zim transport system
• The African Development Bank (AfDB) is set
to commission a $1,5 million Zimbabwe
national transport project master plan aimed
at providing the framework for the sustainable
development of the transport sector to
stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty.
• The project is to be implemented over a 28-
month period is expected to be jointly funded
by the regional financial institution and the
Zimbabwe government.

10. To what extent AfDB fulfilling its role in
the current economic environment.
• Because of the country’s loan arrears situation, donors
may continue to be engaged although to a limited extent.
• Also, if the macroeconomic and political stability attained
during the GNU era is maintained, investor confidence
may remain
• Donors regard ZimFund as the best modality for
development finance in infrastructure given Zimbabwe’s
arrears situation.
• At the same time, Zimbabwe is a regional gateway to
the North-South Corridor due to its central and
strategic location in Southern Africa. An African
Development Bank (AfDB) study estimates Zimbabwe’s
infrastructure gap is at a daunting USD 14 billion
