This document provides an overview of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). It discusses the history of electric and hybrid vehicles, defining HEVs as vehicles with two or more energy sources and at least two propulsion modes. The components of HEVs are described, including electric motors, energy storage batteries and ultracapacitors, and different powertrain configurations. Examples are given of the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrids. Challenges in developing improved energy storage and efficient powertrain designs are also noted.
