As altitude increases, the air contains less oxygen which causes the body to respond by increasing heart rate, breathing rate, and red blood cell production to compensate in the respiratory system. The cardiovascular system increases blood flow to the brain to deliver more oxygen but sometimes too much blood is sent, causing brain swelling from leaking blood vessels in the nervous system.
