The document summarizes a student team project to set up a finish line activity station for the annual Friends of the River fundraiser event hosted by the nonprofit Streams & Valleys. The goal was to populate the area between the fun run finish line and the party entrance with energy and activity. The team set up a station promoting the Trinity River trails and encouraging residents to support the river as Friends of the River. At the event, they welcomed runners and provided noisemakers, tattoos, and information about a raffle prize. The student learned lessons about effective teamwork, event planning, and working with community groups.

Youth Driven Waste Disposal/Recycling Campaign: San Estanislao, ParaguayBrienne Thomson
As a Peace Corps Paraguay volunteer, I ignited the idea for the waste/recycling awareness campaign with the local youth group I work with, Rotaract, a subsidiary of Rotary International for 18 to 30-year-olds. It began with an Asunción-based NGO, Ita Enramada, coming out to San Estanislao to speak about the importance of minding our environment and the tragic impact that the lack of information or recycling programs has had on it. The culmination of the campaign was two-fold. First, we held a competition between the high-schools to design a trashcan to be installed in a popular community park with a message about proper waste disposal or caring for our environment. Second, of the seven local high-schools competing, each was assigned a material from plastic to rubber to cloth, etcetera, to design saleable recycled crafts at a “Feria de Tesoros Reciclados” for a public street fair. Overall, I have never seen such creativity and assertiveness among the youth of my community. I was sincerely proud of everyone involved in organizing and participating in this campaign that I left wondering how I’ll ship all of my new handicrafts back to the States!

1. Streams & Valleys
Friends of the River – Party on the Plaza
Finish Line Activity Station
Event Recap
Yanal Zatar
About the Client: Streams & Valleys is a nonprofit that advocates for beautification and enhancement efforts
of the Trinity River in Fort Worth.
Event Summary: Friends of the River – Party on the Plaza is an annual fundraiser featuring two fun runs (6K
chip-timed race and 3K Social Stroll/Fido Fun Run) followed by a block party with food samplings from more
than 2 dozen restaurants, free beer and wine, live music, and a Paw Pad where pets can join the celebration.
Client Directive: Streams & Valleys requested student teams to each concept, plan and activate a Finish Line
Activity Station that would populate a 3-block “urban hike” from the finish line of the fun runs to the entrance of
the party. The goal was to populate this dead space with energy, activity and noise. Each station needed to
have a purpose – to increase name recognition and brand awareness of the client, and/or support the
organization’s mission in some way. A total of 4 teams hosted Finish Line Activity Stations.
Team Name:Section 001 Team #1 (Trails and Tattoos).
Finish Line Activity Station Theme/Concept:To be a friend of the river and encourage Fort Worth residents
to be Friends of the River.
Key Messages:
Thanks in part to Streams & Valleys, Fort Worth boasts more than 40 miles of trail system along the
Trinity River.
The Trinity Trails system is a valuable resource for a variety of outdoor urban recreation, for runners,
cyclists, families, kayakers, fishing enthusiasts and more.
All Fort Worth residents can play a role in supporting the Trinity River as a valuable community asset
by being a Friend of the River.
Duties Performed:
My rule in this team project was a collateral developer/supplies purchaser, and with special projects when I was
responsible of the sign design. Also I drew three of the posters that has been hanged two of them contains a
drawings one of them contains fish and seahorses and the second was people on bike and people running. My
third poster contains the tips of how to be a Friend of the River.
Event Execution/Activation: In the day of the event I was assigned to set up the table, hang the banner and the
posters, make balloons and draw on them. When people have finished their run I was responsible to welcome
these people with the noise makers and telling them about the free raffle that they get a chance to get a 75$
Luke’s Locker gift card. Also one of my rules was to make tattoos for children to get everybody attention.
Lessons Learned:
One of the best lessons I have learned in this team project was how to be a professional team worker, because
my team showed how to be professional dealing with the group and everybody was respectful and responsible
for their parts.
2. The way we used to communicate mostly was by group text, my phone was not getting all the group texts but I
was asking team members individually to make sure I’m on the same level with my team.
During the event, everything was easy and prepared, all we had to do is setting up because every group member
knew their part well and bring the staff they have been assigned of.
One of the other lessons I have learned in this project is event planning, I feel more comfortable now about how
to do the planning for an event, I know more of how to deal with groups and organizations and how to set up
and make the event go as expected.
Peer Critique:
Each team member did their job as expected and professionally, but I have to mention Valerie and Brittany
because they did a great job communicating with the group members and taking care of every single step we do
in the group. Also they were very helpful and always there when the team needs them.
