Strengthening Design Research Moderating SkillsSusan Mercer
Slides from a talk that I gave for the Boston CHI meeting on April 9, 2013.
Moderating usability studies and interviewing research participants is more than just reading questions off of a page - it's about having a conversation.
In this talk I discuss why it's important to have a conversation with participants and how to do so in a way that encourages them to talk honestly.
I also discuss how to maintain neutrality and minimize introducing bias into the conversation.

1. Who would be the audience for
your media product?
2. Target audience
• As our film is a physiological crime thriller we
decided to create it for the 15+ age group.
• This is because it includes violence and some
psychological issues which can be disturbing
for children smaller than 15.
• It isn't an 18 because it isn't too violent or
disturbing.
• We also believe that people from any race or
gender can watch it as it doesn't refer or aim
at any specific race or gender.
3. Films with similar target audiences:
• Psycho
• Seven
• The shutter island
• V for Vendetta
• Orphan
• Gangster squad
• Argo
• The Call
