1. Q1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Horror teaser trailer Film poster Film magazine front cover
2.
3. Colours used in setting/ costumes & props are vibrant and happy (such as pink/ blues/ & whites)
4. Most of the scenes are filmed in day light unlike horror films, they are set mostly in the dark.
16. Todorov’s narratives theory of equilibrium in the beginning (happy beginning) and disequilibrium at the end(tragic ending). In my horror teaser trailer I used and develop all these convections except for one of them which I challenge. The convention I challenged is the happy beginning, in my trailer I chose not to have a happy beginning because it did not relate with the narrative of my story.
17.
18. Darker shots and settings. (When analysing the trailers I noticed that the use of lighting was very important in creating a fearful atmosphere, so it was important for me to achieve the same. To achieve this I filmed most of the scenes for my trailer in dark locations and in the evening when it was getting dark, the only problems we came across when filming in dark areas is that sometimes the camera would automatically go out of focus, this meant we had to time are filming carefully to make sure we didn't film when it was to dark. I also filmed fire as it adds a lot of tension to my trailer and it is also a horror convention.
19. Fast pace of shots. This is very often used in horror film to create tension and engage the viewers, which is what I aimed to do with my trailer.
20. The typical length of a teaser trailer is between 30sec -1:30 min and mine is just in the middle at 1 minute.
21. Costumes and props. The costumes I chose to used were either black or red to fit in with the dark colour scheme of the trailer. In my trailer I used knifes and blood which is often seen in horror trailers. The main characters costume includes a top hat/ long black coat and a brief case, these were specifically chosen so that the character looked like Jack the Ripper.
22. Characters (Propp’s character theory) - Villain and Victims. The villain will be played my the character Damon who has been possessed by the spirit of Jack the Ripper. The victims will be played by Jessica & Hannah which are both prostitutes. (They play prostitutes because Jack the Ripper killed prostitutes). Just like most horror films my actors will be unheard off. Most of the conventions such as shots/characters/props & costumes I used in my trailer were influenced by the film ‘From Hell’. I watch the whole film and analysed it, the reason it was important for me to watch this film was because it related to my narrative based around the story of Jack the Ripper.
25. Dark and contrasting colour schemes (Reds/Oranges/Browns/Black & Whites)
26. Font size of film title is always the biggest.
27. Tagline, to attract the viewers interest in the film.
28. Close up or extreme close up of an object, character or its features. Although the 3 horror posters I analysed all have photos of long shots most posters conventionally use close up shots because it portrays more fear, which is usually shown through the character facial expressions. ( a good example of this is Mirrors and Scream film posters)
31. White = innocence & purity, which represents the victims in the film. The credits for the films producers/ directors/actors are not positioned in the conventional place which is at the bottom in the middle, were as I placed it at the bottom left corner. The reason I challenged this convention is because when I originally placed it in the bottom middle it looked to crowded against the female on the poster, it also interrupted the effect of leading lines form the beginning leading down to the siluet of Jack The Ripper. Website, which is there for audience who are interested in the film to find out more about it by watching the trailer, reading about the characters and the narrative.
32.
33. The second magazine I picked was Total Film’s Superman Returns cover, the similarity with this film and my was the theme of the main character having two identities and also includes Propp’s character theory.
40. Several cover lines surrounding the main image, to show what other articles the magazine contains.
41. The price and date displayed on top. Barcode displayed at the bottom. The film magazine front cover I have created follows all these conventional patterns of real media products.
42.
43.
44. The cover lines are position on the side so that they won’t take the attention away from the main photo which is the most important part of the cover.
45. The font size and colour vary on what headline in most important.“Magazine of the year 2010”. This tells the readers that the magazine is of good quality and the best you can buy. Barcode placed on bottom corner of magazine. The main photo is a close up shot, which is often used in many film cover photos to introduce and highlights the main character of the featured film.
