In what ways does our media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Our horror has included generic horror conventions in it by taking advantage of the viewers fears by incorporating themes such as isolation from society, gas masks, the supernatural, fear of death and the unexplained. The fact we have used these conventions helps define our film as a horror. We have taken inspiration from films such as The Orphan, as we use the aspect of children and warped innocence as a main aspect of our film. We also got the journal idea from the film Seven. The conventions of our film, such as the feeling of isolation and shocks help identify the film as a horror. The subgenre of our film would be psycho thriller.
What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?Our film would be something that Hollywood studios might want to produce. As mentioned before, one of our main influneces for We All Fall Down was The Orphan. I think this would mean that if a producer looked at the type of attraction that The Orphan got, they would be more likely to pick up our film, as fans of The Orphan would come and see the film.We All Fall Down would be released as there there is an opportunity to target people who like psycho thrillers. There would also be a chance to create a sequal in which we learn more about Rosie (the killer) and find out how she was turned into this killer.
There’s also the opportunity to bring out merchandise for We All Fall Down. Like films such as Freddy Kruger and Scream, we could produces copies of the costume Rosie wears. The official merchandise could consists of gasmasks, dolls and even replicas of the teddy that Rosie carries around with her. We would also do t-shirts in which they had the studio logo on and also ones with pictures of masks on them.
Like every film, We All Fall Down would also have its on game in which you can either be Rosie and kill the people in the journal or you can be one of her ‘victims’ and try to kill/attack Rosie. There would also be a range of figures and collectiable items.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product? When filming we decided to use one of our own cameras so we could get a better picture quality and also shoot in HD. The only problem that we had with the camera was that, since we had filmed in HD it took longer for the videos to upload onto the hard drive. We a had a lot of problems with the hard drive and saving the things that we had done on it. Most of the time the hard drive wouldn’t save the work that we had done or said that the work we had done couldn’t be found. After getting help and trying to find out what was wrong, we found that the original videos had been saved to a different computer and not to the hard drive, thus meaning the work was ‘offline’.
When we were filming we found it hard to fit it around the busyness of the group and find a time that we were all free. However we did find the time and found the perfect places to shoot the majority of what we needed to have done. Once we finally worked out when we were going to film it didn’t take long for us to have most of our shots done. We chose to do the shots of the journal in the college studio as it was easy and meant we could do it during our lessons.
Final Cut Express HDWe used Final Cut when editing our film. This was a new experience as no one in the group had used Final Cut. We chose to use Final Cut instead of iMovie as it had better tools to work with. Final Cut was a better choice for our film, as we shot in HD, thus meaning iMovie would have been limited in helping us create our film.At the beginning the group found it rather difficult to work Final Cut as we had only ever used iMovie before. However after a few lessons we soon had an idea of what we needed to use, and how it worked.
The layout of Final Cut Express made it easy for the group to work with as it had everything setout in an easy way to understand. The toolbar was easy to use and had a varity of things for us to eperiment with. When it came to using effects and different transitions, we found that Final Cut had many different things for us to ‘play’ with. The transitions were also very easy to use, thus making our job easy.
One problem that the group seem to had was with converting from mp4 to DV. At first we weren’t to sure on how to convert but then after asking for help we found it much easier.
LiveTypeOur first idea was to write the titels in journal, but we realised that it wouldn’t have been a good idea.
