Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full
product? (Develop a response noting how much your skills in the following areas have developed - mise-en-
scene, editing, camerawork and sound. The use of developing your narrative through dialogue is very important).
Comparing my film opening
to the preliminary task
When comparing my opening sequence to the
preliminary task there were clear differences.
However, we have also used the same basic
shots seen in the preliminary task. By using
these shots even when put in a genre we can
change them to make it more effective to the
horror films audience.
Quality of shots and image
The quality of our shots were more effective in
some timings in the opening. However, when
wanting to look into using minimal light our shots
became less effective. When watch the opening
you can see this due to some images being
blurred. But, when shooting the opening we used
a tripod meaning the camera was steady when it
needed to be and was in the point of view of a
character other times. There was also a lot of
change in the filters that were used when editing
for example black and white which showed a
contrast when looking at good and evil.
Quality of sound
The sound quality overall was good. We felt as
though by having certain sound effects overlayed
by the constant backing track gave both the a
problem and the constant suspense needed. For
example, when overlaying James’ voice over and
over again it was very effective showing some
type of possession.
Dialogue
The use of dialogue I feel was one of the most
influential parts throughout the opening
sequence. For example, at the end when you
see the change in the child’s voice and body
language you can see a clear change. When
listen to just the dialogue the change had a big
impact on us as the audience as you wouldn’t
expect that to come from a child. This is because
a child is seen as innocence compared to an
adult and this type of behaviour would be
important when showing a possession type of
storyline
Continuity
The use of costumes and props are very
important due to the idea we were trying to
achieve. For example, we wanted to show the
modern day when looking at the idea of
technology taking over such as Ipads. We also
had the family were modern clothing. However,
we didn’t need to show any different era just the
sense of an unseen figure in the back never
actually seen but constantly influencing the
children.
Continuity of editing
When editing our film opening we looked in to
different ways that it could be effective to the
audience such as filters, pacing, music and the
entire flow of the sequence. Black and white
seemed most effective when contrasting an evil
presence to the idea of a normal situation. Also
the pace being changed when the door slams
shut seemed to have an impact when looking at
feedback. This idea was to show a presence
showing both force to make the audience jump
and be worried about the characters.
