1. How doesyourproductuse or challenge conventionsandhow doesitrepresentsocial groupsorissues?
Conventions:
For the firsttwo scenesIuseda mastershot andan establishingshot.Thischallengesthe conventionof
fictionmovie openings.Because lookingatsome examplesof openingsfromfamousmovieslike the
matrix and zombieland,theybothusedclose upshots, mediumshotsandlongshotstoestablishthe
scene.Theyalsousednarrations, somethingthatIdidn’tuse inmy movie atall. One of the mostnoted
thingsI sawin zombielandandthe matrix isthat theydidn’thave alotof dialogue inthe firstscenes of
the movie.Theyusedshotstoexplainthe scenario.
Afterthe establishingshotandthe mastershot,I usedclose upshots,mediumshots,longshotsand
wide shotstoshowthe morningroutine of mycharacterand to introduce him.Ina lot of actionfiction
moviestheyusuallyintroduce the characterusingactionscenesandviolence aroundthe character. As
showninthe openingof Dawnof the Deadand Zombieland.

2. For the last scenesof mymovie,Istart addingsuspense andaction.Butotheractionfictionmovie
openings hasalreadyintroducedususingviolence andaction.Somysuspense andactioncame in late.
Alsoina lot of the actionfictionmovie openingslikezombielandshowedverygoryscenes.Unlikemy
movie openingthatshowedminimumamountof gore.
Social Groups:
All mediaproductsrepresentaparticulargroupof some sort. Our fiction openingrepresentsteenagers.
My movie’stargetaudience isteenagersaged between15 to 18. Theylive incountriesinthe Middle
East, Europe, Africa, SouthAmericaandNorthAmerica.Teenagersinthisage usuallylike actionand
violence.Alsoinalotof the mentionedcontinents,mostof themhave violence intheirculture.I
researched the type of people wholove actionfictionmoviesandfoundoutthattheyare teenagers.
The main character isa teenagerthatis agedexactlylike the targetaudience. The characterisdressed
up like ateenager, forexampledarkpantswitha graphite T-shirt.He alsotakescare of hislooksas we
see inthe movie. He brusheshisteetheverydayandtakesgoodcare of his hair.My movie includeda
gun as the weaponof choice. Thisisan aspectshowninmany teenage actionfictionmovieslike
zombieland, includingmy own. Mymovie includedalaptop. Asmy mediaproductwas createdto
representteenagers,I feel asthoughthe laptopwasa goodprop as itallowedthe use of a popular
teenage social networkingsite,Facebook. The final similaritythatI foundinactionfictionmovies isthat
the evil personorthingisvery powerful.Teenagershate badguyswitha lotof power thattheyuse for
evil.Inmymovie the badguy iszombie,he isveryaggressive andviolentwhenhe seeshumans.
The main character fromZombie
land. He is a teenager like our
character in our opening.
The main character from our
opening.He isa teenager like
the other main character
from zombieland.
3. How doesyourproductengage withaudiencesandhow woulditbe distributedasa real mediatext?
Audience:
As a group,we have decidedthatour target audience forour mediaproductare teenagersbetweenthe
agesof 15 and 19. Althoughit isviewable for the olderage groups. We researchedwhatengagesthe
teenagersinamovie. We have alsousedsome of our opinionsbecause we are teenagers.
The firstthingwe foundisthat teenagersgetengagedtoamovie thathas a lot of suspense andaction.
Our openingprovidesthisbyshowinggunsandzombies.Teenagerslikezombies.Itisapopularthingon
the internetandthe TV.People talk aboutitnonstoponsocial mediawebsites.Ouropeningengagesthe
teenagersbyaddingzombies.We alsofoundoutthat theylike weaponsespeciallyguns.Ouropening
includesanoldclassicrevolver(the name of the weapon). We alsoshowedthe audience firefromthe
gun makingthe scene lookmore realistic. We addedagood soundeffecttothe gun to make alsolook
more realistic. The gunfire engagedthe audience bybeingmore realistic.Italsoengagedthembuyusing
weaponslike guns.
Teenagersthese days like toknowotherpeoplesmorningroutine.Because itgivesthemanideaof the
characteristicsof a Personandtheyusuallyuse itto compare it to theirmorningroutine.Mycharacter
showshismorningroutine.Thiswill engage the audience bytellingthemthe characteristicsof the
character. Lastly,teenagersthesedayslike electronicmusicbecause itgivesthempowerand
excitement.Myopeninghaselectronicmusicplayinginthe credits.
4. How wouldmyproductbe distributedasa real mediatext?
Because we Live inQatar we are goingto use Qatari an filminstitutionstodistribute ourproduct. Asa
groupwe have discussedwhatkindof mediainstitutionmightwishtodistribute ourmediaproduct.We
feel asthoughwe shouldaimmore towardsthe lowerbudget Qatarfilminstitutionsratherthana
higherbudgetfilmdistributioncompanysuchas The Warner Brothers. We thinkthisbecause if we were
to distribute withahigherendcompanythenourmediaproductwould notworkout as well because
those typesof filmswoulduse infinite levelsof CGIandveryexpensive andupgradedtechnologies.
We thinkthatour filmshouldbe producedwitha filmcompanysuchas Doha FilmInstitute (DFI).DFI
has producedmanylowbudget,yetsuccessful,Qatarianfilms.Whilstresearchingwe foundthat DFIdo
not produce filmswithinthe fictiongenre. Therefore we feelasthoughouraction fictionwouldstand
out amongstthe restof theirfilms, therefore leadingittobe successful withinthe filmindustry.
Howeverthiscouldalsobe a drawbackas theymay not wishtotake on a mediaproductof the fiction
genre as theydonot specialize inthisareaof the industry. Anexampleof theirworkisshownInmovies
like JustLike a WomanstarringSiennaMiller, The ReluctantFundamentalistdirectedbyMiraNairwhich
opened69th Venice International FilmFestival, andKanye West'sCruel Summer- a shortfilmwhich
shotin Doha andpremieredduringthe 2012 CannesFilmFestival.
Otherfilmdistributioncompanies like QatarCinemaCOcouldbe usedtoproduce our movie.Howeverit
alsodoesnot distribute fictionmovies.
5. How didyourproductionskillsdevelopthroughoutthe project?
Our productionskillswere verybadbecause itwasourfirst time workingon a projectfor ASmedia
studies. We didn’tknowalotabout productionbecause we didnotcoverall of it inthe classroom. We
had problemswithtime management. We setdatesforus to meetinbuta lotof people ignoredthem
and wenttowork on othersubjects.Thiscausedalotof argumentswithinthe group.We alsodidn’t
knowthe importance of eachobjective, forexample we workedmore onscriptsthanmakingthe actual
opening. Ourlacof productionskillsmade uswaste time untilthe deadlinecame close. Sowe workedas
hard as we can a finishedjustintime.Afterknowingall the problemsthatwe hadwithproduction,we
decreasedthe numberof membersinourgroupto make iteasierto manage.Itwas a good call forthe
groupbecause afterdecreasingthe amountof members,we were able easilymanage ourtime. We
were alsoable toknowwhichtargetsare more importantthan others. We usedonline calendarstohelp
us planmeeting. We startedsettingupdeadline datesthatthe groupwouldhave toachieve.
For the editingsoftware itwaseasyuse butitneeda lotof practice to get the hangof it.Editingwas
easybut we need more time onitimprove ourskills. We hadsome problemswithputtingthe correct
soundeffectinthe correctscene.But aftersometime practicingonthe computeritwasveryeasy.We
experimentedwithalot of transitionsbutthe dissolve wasthe mostusedone asthisallowedusto
almostmerge framestogetherandgive goodflow.Luckilyone of mygroupmembersisgoodatvideo
editingsoftware sohe helpedus out.
At the beginningof the projectwe hadtoknow about the camera movement, anglesandshots. The
teachershowedustheirusesandwhatequipmenttheyneededtobe made.Forexample fortracking
camera movementyouneedtohave a trolleythatmovesyouona track, thisgivesasmoothcamera
movements.Itisusedtofollowcharactersaround. Butwe were notable to do itour elvesbecause we
didn’thave the resources.Howeverwere able touse othercameramovementslike handheld.Atfirst
we were badat handheldcameramovementbutwe gotthe hang of it. For ourshots andangleswe read
theirdefinitionsandwe didexamplesof eachshotand angle.
6. How didyouintegrate technologies –software, hardware andonline –inthisproject?
Before we were actuallyintroducedtoanyfilmingequipment, ourfirsttaskwasto create our own
‘blogger’account;thisiswhere all of our workwouldbe storedsothat we couldlookback uponit.
Nobodyinour grouphad usedthiswebsite before howeveritwasquite simpletouse as ithad a clear
straightforwardlayout.One problemwe didcome acrosswasuploadingourdocumentonto blogger.
Thiswas not a majorproblemasit was easyto overcome byuploadingthe documentsontoother
websiteslike Slideshare andputtingalinktotheminthe blog. As we had to uploadPowerPoint
presentationsandworddocumentstoourblogs,we createdaccountsonthe website Slideshare which
enabledustodo thistask. It was quite simple touploadthe PowerPointandthe WordDocumentonto
our Slideshare accountshowever;itdidconsume quite alotof time.Doingthisallowspeopletoviewa
full PowerPointandWorddocumentviaa blog.
Withinthe productionof ourmediaproduct,we have learnthow to use variousfilmingtechnologies.
Primarily,we were introducedtonewequipmentincludingcameras,tripodsandarange of computer
programmers.We foundthatusingtripodsisimportantwhile filminganactionfictionmovie,because
there wouldbe a lotof movement.Alsowe foundoutthatbecause of Qatar beingwindythese days,we
have to have a good micto produce a good soundqualityandmakingiteasiertohear.Howeverwe
didn’thave the budgetorthe equipmenttobuya tripodand a goodmic. The school didn’thelpuswith
equipmentbecause theyalsodidn’thave it.Itwasveryhard to learnwiththe lac of equipment.
Duringthe editingprocesswe usedaWindowssoftware calledMoviemaker. The software wasveryeasy
to use.It onlytookus a couple daysto understandthe software. We alsodidn’tneedalotof guidance
as the software wasmakingthingseasy.Howeverwe didhave acouple of problems.Whenwe workon
moviemakerinschool,the software runsperfectly.Butwhenwe runitat our home computer,thenit
doesn’twork. We noticedthatthe computersinour school run onWindows8 operatingsystembutour
home computerrunson windows7operatingsystem.Thismade ithardto run our workthat we didon
moviemakerinschool, torun onour home computers.Butat the endwe were able tofinda computer
withwindows8operatingsystem.
We usedwebbrowseralotto researcha lotof the thingsinmakinga fictionmovie.Forexample we
usedSlidesharetolookat workthat otherpeople didwhentheydidtheirmediaproduct.Itgave usa lot
of inspiration. We alsousedwebsiteslike Wikipediatogive usinformationabout the fictiongenera. It
was veryeasyto use because we use iteveryday.Butthe hardestpart wasto findthe correct source of
information.Itisbecause noteverythinginWikipediaiscompletelyaccurate.
