Jesse Manning contributed to the development of ideas for their film group's thriller project in several ways. He interviewed people about potential film titles and researched successful thriller films like The Avengers and Batman to understand conventions of the genre. Jesse also researched soundtracks and effects to understand how sound impacts a film's atmosphere. When filming the opening sequence, Jesse suggested filming at a house rather than a generic location. He acted in and helped direct the first draft, then edited the full opening sequence. For the final version, Jesse again acted and filmed some reshoots, and helped edit by matching sounds, adding transitions, and including special effects like a vignette.
2. WHAT DID YOU CONTRIBUTE TO RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPING IDEAS?
When it came to the actually contributing to the research and the development of the groups ideas, I had many set tasks that I
had to complete in order to really understand how out film was going to end up. One example of this would be
interviewing people about the ideas we had for the title of our film. We started off with a small selection of names and
in the end narrowed it down to only one.. I also had to look into many other thriller films such as the Avengers and
also Batman to really look at how those particular major blockbuster films such the codes and conventions of thriller
films and how successful they were in sing them.. By looking at these two particular films my knowledge of thriller films
grew and I was able to share this knowledge with my group and also make a huge impact with some of the ideas I had
gained from watching a few thrillers. I was also se the interesting task of looking for different sound tracks and sound
effects that we though would be included in our film. After researching into the film Jaws and how sound can really
change the atmosphere of a film, and can really add another mood to the scene. Our group started off with three
initial ideas and were really happy with all three,. However, we ended up asking fellow class mates and even random
people at The British Film Institute their ideas and film their response. When asking these media professionals, they
gave me some expert advice on how to really start off an opening sequence. Some of the points that they were talking
about were, Camera angles, sound and most importantly, the use of the codes and conventions from that particular
genre. After gathering all this advice I quickly fed back to the group and we began to craft our final idea.. At the end of
this I had to hand draw a story board which outlined how our opening sequence would go.
3. WHAT DID YOU CONTRIBUTE TO FILMING THE
THRILLER OPENING SEQUENCE?
When it came to deciding where we were going to film our opening sequence, we as a
group decided that we were going to film our first draft in a school and with in a class
room and also in a corridor. However, It was my suggestion to actually go to someone's
house to film the very beginning of the opening sequence. We really wanted somewhere
that didn’t seem boring and wasn’t something someone sees everyday so we thought a
mixture of someone's bedroom / bathroom and also the outside of a school. I think I
chose the house of the person because it was something that everyone could relate too
and this was something that everyone has.
4. WHAT DID YOU CONTRIBUTE TO FILMING THRILLER
OPENING SEQUENCE I.E. DIRECTING, STARING, FILMING
AND DEVELOPING IDEAS
In the very first draft of the opening sequence I was actually on of the main characters and I acted as Kelsey’s
best friend who is very concerned about her. As well as starring in the thriller film I helped direct and visualize
some of the shots that we ended up using to really make sure that the opening sequence would look smooth.
Furthermore, after we had filmed I was the one that took all the clips and ended up editing the whole opening
sequence. I however did get some support from my co workers. As well as this, I helped develop many ideas
that were used in the end product for our first draft, many different shots that I suggested were used and also
many different camera angles that were suggest by me and others were used as well.
When it came to our final version of the opening sequence, I ended up starring in the opening sequence again
although it was more towards the end of it and as a few lines to say. As well as starring in a part of the opening
sequence, I ended up filmed a few little sections that needed to be re filmed due to some silly camera mistakes
in the beginning due to the camera not being start and odd lighting. I ended up filming some of the outdoor
scenes out side of the school. When it came to the editing process, we edited on my computer and I had to
upload and let all the videos process and get them onto the computer as well as doing many parts of the
editing as well.
5. WHAT DID YOU CONTRIBUTE TO EDITING THE THRILLER
I.E. IDEAS, CONSTRUCTING THE OPENING SEQUENCE?
When it came to actually editing the opening sequence for our thriller film, I did a large
part of the actual editing. When it came to importing the clips onto the computer me
and other people did that together. However, when it comes to what I did individually, I
had to match the sound effects and music to the right place in the opening sequence, I
also had to use many different special effect features such as different cuts to show
smooth transitions between scenes. I also had to choose the opening title of the film and
also place that in the sequence mid way through. As well as doing some of the actual
construction of the opening sequence, I also helped in adding a vignette to the overall
image to really make the opening sequence look eerie and spooky. The overall effect of
the vignette added some spooky atmosphere to the scene. I also had to google some
methods of changing the colour of the overall picture due to some discoloration is some
areas. This extra research really helped with my knowledge and increased my confidence
in editing.
