Evaluation Lewis Winstanley
Location The location I chose for my media production was a science lab which was the closest I could get to a mortuary. Chemicals surrounding the scene gives the audience an unsafe feel. I wanted a mortuary setting to put forward the idea of death to the audience straight from the start so they had an idea of what is going to be happening a lot in the film.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My media product uses many forms and conventions of real media such as the scene where the man comes back to life is set in a mortuary which gives the viewer and immediate sense of death which may interest the viewer and also a very unfamiliar setting for events such as murder to take place. The lighting which is used in this scene is bright because I wanted to keep the viewer uncertain about what is going to a happen and not have the typical dark and bad weather setting. Without this dark setting it gives the viewer something to think about as they may not expect something bad to happen during a light setting.
How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product represents young adults as the main stars and target audience are young adults. My film shows violence which many young adults will enjoy as it is the 21 st century and violence is a big interest for most young adults. This is shown in the short fight scene between the zombie like man and the scientist. There is also fake blood and weapons used to make it more gory and to emphasise the violence.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? I would like universal pictures to distribute my film because during my research I looked at films such as doomsday which was distributed by them which is very similar to mine. They are also a very big company and my film would be able to get a lot of attention if distributed by them. They also distributed films such as ‘drag me to hell’ so they know what is needed to make successful horror films. I believe they would want to distribute my film because it has the potential to have a very good story line about revenge and could really interest a viewer. My film is also similar to the successful doomsday in the sense of an infection may be spreading and my film could bring another zombie like horror which many audiences enjoy.
Who would be the audience for your media production? My target audience would be young adults from 16-18 because it is quite a violent and gory film which means it would not be suitable for anyone younger than this. I tried to make this clear by using violent scenes such as the fight in the lab between the ‘dead’ person and the scientist and we witness a stabbing. The other scene with the scientist shortly after is violent so if anyone under the age of this will immediately know what kind of film they are going to be watching and weather it is suitable for them or not.
How did you attract/address your audience? I addressed the audience by using people of the same age as the target audience to star in the film. The storyline is also unclear and many answers are still left to be giving so it draws in the audience and makes them want to watch on to find out the answers.
What I learnt from filming my preliminary task? During the process of making my media product I have learnt how to edit a film using iMovie. I have had practice changing sound effects which adds a scary affect to the film and making sure the film all flows without jumping. I have also learnt how to use a camera properly when filming.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I have learnt how to use a camera to video. It was the first time I have ever used a camera to make my own film and I had to get use to the settings but once I did i found it quite easy to record and stop. Edditing using iMovie was also something new for me and it took me a while to figure out how to do certain things such as add sound etc but once I had played around with it I began to figure things out and eventually found it easier to edit.
Changes made to my film and why? I decided to change a few things that would work better instead of sticking to our plan when it came to actually filming. I decided to have two scientists killed in two different rooms so the audience could see how brutal the ‘dead’ body can be. By having the scientist being killed separately we could have them killed off in different ways so it is more interesting for the audience to watch instead of one big fight scene where the scientists get killed together in the same way. I had two alternative endings to my film and I chose to use the relatives reaction because this enables the film to go on into a storyline of revenge instead of the other ending where the outbreak could have been shown but this wouldn’t lead to much of a storyline for the audience to get into and ask questions of the film.
