The European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) is an organization that provides statistical and analytical information on the film, television, video/DVD and audiovisual media industries. It was formed in 1992 by the Council of Europe. The EAO collects and publishes market reports, statistics, legal reports and news to inform professionals and researchers about trends in the European audiovisual sector. It is based in Strasbourg, France and funded by contributions from its 40 member states and the European Union. The EAO is headed by Dr. Susanne Nikoltchev and has legal and market teams that produce publications, databases and online services analyzing the audiovisual industry in Europe.

2. WHAT IS EAO?
• An organization which provides statistical and analytical information on the
fields of film, television, Video/DVD, new audiovisual media services and public
policy on film & television
• Formed on 15th December, 1992 by the Council of Europe.

3. WHAT DOES EAO DO?
• EAO provides information stating the market reports, statistics,
financial analyses, legal reports & news updates in the field of
Films, TV, Video/DVD and any other media services.
• These information are available to the general public in the
form of print publications, Online material, databases &
directories of various kinds.
• They provide information which is aimed at various
professionals from the audiovisual sector viz. producers,
distributors, exhibitors, broadcasters and other different kind of
media service providers.
• They also provide information which becomes a base for many
of the researchers, journalists, lawyers & consultants, etc.

4. WHERE IT IS BASED &
HOW IT IS FUNDED?
• Art Nouveau Villa Schutzenberger on Strasbourg’s Allee de la
Robertsau, France.
• Funded by direct contributions of its member of states and the
European union. (28 countries & 40 member state) and partly
also by sales of its products & services.

5. EAO AND ITS TEAM
• EAO is basically headed by Dr. Susanne Nikoltchev.
• There are basically 2 different types of work is carried under EAO which has
been differentiated for administrative purposes.
1) Legal Team (Head of Department is Dr. Maja Cappello)
2) Market & Financing (Head of Department – Mr. Giles Fontaine)
Both the teams or the sections are responsible for the collection, processing &
editing of various data which has to made in the form of reports for different
kind of publications/announcements.

FUNCTION:
• They meet twice a year: once in the country holding the
annual rotating Presidency of the Observatory & one at
Strasbourg.
• They meet to discuss the annual & 3 year action plans and
also approves the budget required to finance these plans.

4. Secretariat
