Surveys conducted between 2009 and 2011 show that more than 250 000 children are used and exploited in cocoa plantations in West Africa (mainly in Ivory Coast). In 2001, some of the big names of the global chocolate industry signed the Harkin-Engel protocol and committed to addressing the worst forms of child labour. Ten years later, none of the goals set by this protocol were fully achieved.
In the article "Ethics in the chocolate value chain" the Trade for Development Centre describes the complexe structure which excludes poor cocoa farmers from sharing in the profits. The article lists some initiatives set up by the professionals and the big names in the sector.

Introduction to the film Nothing like Chocolate www.chocoladeboot.nl, discussing the environmental, social and economic issues at stake in making the chain of making the '"food of the gods".
After the cocoa industry was blamed for the many child labour scandals and because cocoa producers were being paid prices that were far too low, large chocolate companies took initiatives to improve the sustainability. What is the current situation, particularly after the cocoa price on the world market dropped significantly last year?
Even while market conditions are tough, across cocoa-producing regions cooperatives resolutely choose for sustainable or organic production and fair trade. Twenty of these cooperatives are supported by the Trade for Development Centre (TDC). To put a face on their endeavours, we visited Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire as well as Bolivia and Vietnam.
The Dark Side of Chocolate is about the exploitation and slave trading of African children to harvest chocolate still occurring nearly ten years after the cocoa industry pledged to end it.
Discover how ethical your chocolate brand is. Ranking of 99 chocolate published by Ethical Consumer Magazine on their July/August issue 2018. Read about the sweet and bitter sides of the industry. You can help by choosing the right one and send a strong messages agains abuses in the industry like child labour, deforestation and poverty among many others.

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) have made a lot of headlines and captured attention from university management. What is a MOOC? Do we care? Should we? This paper offers a briefing on what the first things you need to know are.
This paper explains what the different types of MOOCs are, the different pedagogical theories they assume, and discuss how they might evolve in the future. We identify the various motivations each stakeholder group might have for becoming involved in a MOOC as a learner, teacher or institution. Do MOOCs mark the dawn of a golden age of adult education and free CPD; or the final collapse of large courses into impersonal production lines? We discuss some apparent challenges to "normal" HE standards e.g. attrition rates, likely workloads.
Cotton is one of the most widely cultivated crops worldwide. The cotton sector is subject to very unstable prices. This is especially to the disadvantage of African producer countries where cotton is often the only source of revenue for millions of farmers and workers. Moreover, the cotton sector is subject to serious environmental and health risks.
To deal with these, African cotton growers must look for credible alternatives such as fairtrade and/or organic cotton.
A mobile phone, smartphone, PC, laptop or tablet: few of us can do without them. But who considers the genuine cost of a phone conversation or an e-mail sent? Who thinks about the raw materials, the working conditions and the ecological impact behind modern electronics? Let us take the time to look at the issues and consider consumer actions and (future) alternatives.
Africa's Great Lakes region is known for its quality Arabica and Robusta coffee. That is why buyers have criss-crossed the Great Lakes region for more than a century in search of the cherries that make such excellent coffee.
The Trade for Development Centre (TDC) has committed itself to supporting 5 of these cooperatives, in Uganda, Rwanda and DRC, to contribute to making the Great Lakes coffee a lever for development for small marginalised producers in the region.
With almost a quarter of the global population and approximately 10% annual growth over the last 20 years, China has become the foremost power at the beginning of the third millennium. A middle class has emerged over the last years which closely resembles Europe and the United States in terms of buying behaviour. This change, which is both cultural and economic, goes hand in hand with new demands from younger generations, which are sensitive to social and environmental issues. Against this background, interesting fair trade initiatives have emerged in the Middle Empire. Read on to find out more about fair trade in China.
It is of the utmost importance that China's new generation takes ownership of fair trade's economic models. Such models can contribute to shifting the culture and habits of these "new-comers" in a global mass consumption society because their numbers, their values and their preference weigh on global matters. Fair trade in China is not anecdotal. It is a new horizon for a fairer global economy.
Nearly 25 years after the fall of the Wall and the rushed transition to a free market economy, fair trade products are gradually finding their way to consumers in Eastern Europe. Step by step, with limited resources but with great enthusiasm, an ever-increasing group of activists is working on the path ahead.
Few countries in the world match Ecuador’s natural beauty and cultural richness. With its coast, its sierra, the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador is home to four ecosystems and a rich biodiversity.
One quarter of the population is indigenous and still cherishes age-old traditions.
The 'indígenas’ growing self-awareness makes Ecuador a pioneer in developing community-based tourism.
The availability of sustainable coffee in the assortments of Belgian supermar...TradeForDevelopment Centre
The Trade for Development Centre had a study carried out that gives an overview of the current and future availability of sustainable coffee in the assortments of major Belgian supermarkets. Coffee pads and cups is the product group with the highest sustainability level (50%), followed by ground coffee and coffee beans (each 31%). Instant coffee is the product group with the lowest sustainability level (12%).
Delhaize is the frontrunner in the offer of sustainable ground coffee (58%) and has already taken the lead in making their private label coffee assortment more sustainable. Lidl leads in the offer of coffee pads and cups and instant coffee. Aldi is the only supermarket that doesn't offer any sustainable coffee at all.
- Market Study 2012
With a turnover of 500 billion dollars and 250 million employees, tourism is one of the main economic activities globally. However, revenue from the tourist business is often distributed unfairly and the environment is under pressure because of tourism.
Does 'sustainable tourism’ offer an alternative? And how can the triple P of sustainable development (people, planet, profit) be reconciled with the P of pleasure?
Sustainable cocoa in the Dominican Republic - ForestFinanceCIFOR-ICRAF
Presentation at the Global Landscapes Forum on 6 June 2016, in London, UK during the Dragon's Den session. For more information go to: www.landscapes.org.
This report contributes to research on the cocoa global value chain (GVC). It examines consolidation
patterns in the cocoa industry and their potential impacts on stakeholders along the value chain, in
particular small cocoa farmers who constitute the backbone of cocoa production worldwide. It also
discusses these farmers’ integration into world cocoa markets, highlighting some critical issues they face.
The report finally offers some policy recommendations which may help governments, the private sector,
the international community and producers to foster the development of a sustainable cocoa economy
by empowering farmers, consonant with the Global Cocoa Agenda adopted at the first World Cocoa
Conference in Abidjan in 2012. The report should ultimately contribute to the debate on how to attain
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with their commitment to ‘’leave no on behind’’, especially in
cocoa farming communities.

Sugarcane and rum report - Give them a break - The bitter consequences of poo...CNV Vakcentrale
This report is part of the work the Dutch trade union federation CNV Internationaal does on fair supply chains on labour rights with Central American trade unions and the Central American Institute for Social Studies (Instituto Centroamericano de Estudios Sociales, ICAES). This study is also part of the Occupational Safety and Healt programme of Fairfood. Sugarcane workers in Central America are dying from CKDnT, while the solutions to prevent it are basic: It all starts with decent labour conditions that reduce work and heat stress, as well as dehydration. But of course there's more: Wages are so low that workers need to work much too many hours per day. See also: www.cnvinternationaal.nl
For 2012 the UN focuses on cooperatives “because cooperative enterprises contribute to reducing poverty for many families and communities”.
Members of cooperatives undertake voluntarily to get associated and better pool their individual resources. This social and participatory model stands for values that perfectly suit the fair trade values: payment of a fair price and obtaining fair incomes.
