Ethernet OAM now provides two types of operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) functionality that were lacking in the past. The first type developed by ITU and IEEE 802.1 provides full-featured end-to-end OAM including alarms, remote defect indications, and performance measurement. The second type from the EFM task force is limited to single link continuity monitoring and targeted at access applications. While the two OAM types protect different layers, it is unclear why two separate standards are needed.
