ETF1100 Business Statistics
Group Assignment – 2021S1
A. How it works
• This project will be undertaken in small groups and involve analysing a data set using the
approaches to quantitative problems you have learnt in this unit.
• The final product will be a set of presentation slides which you will submit via Moodle by Friday
11pm on 14 May 2021 (the end of Week 10). A penalty of 10% per day applies for late
submissions. The assignment should contain no more than 15 slides.
• The slides should show, in an interesting way, the main things you have done and learned in
addressing the main question of the assignment. Usually, you would present these slides to
your workshop members and tutor. However, given there is some uncertainty around COVID-
19, and we have students in Melbourne and overseas, you will not actually present the slides
this semester.
• The assignment is structured such that it gives groups some freedom to explore the problem
in ways they see fit. There is no single correct answer for the assignment. It is a research project
and different groups will approach things differently. This is encouraged.
• Students have been put in groups based on their preferences. All group members will generally
be enrolled in the same workshop. There will be around 5 members in each group (though
some groups may have more or less members than this). You should get in touch with your
group members, organise to meet regularly and share ideas and the workload. It can be
challenging, but also rewarding, to work in groups. The assignment is aimed at building your
groupwork experience as well as fostering contact with your peers in this unit. If you find you
are not in a group, then contact us as soon as possible. Also, it is possible that some of your
allocated group members may have dropped the unit, or you may find that your group
members may not be entirely cooperative. If you email someone and do not get a response,
then proceed with the remaining group members.
• All group members must contribute to the assignment. There will be an opportunity to give
feedback on the contributions of other members of your group, and this feedback will be used
when allocating an individual’s final mark for this assessment. If you do not participate fully in
the assignment, and cooperate with your group members, then you should expect your grade
to be adjusted downwards as a result.
• The project is worth 18% of your final mark and your grade will depend on the quality and
content of your presentation slides as well as your participation in the assignment. See the
marking guide at the end of this document.
• You will receive written feedback on the assignment. In addition, we will run a workshop where
the tutor will talk through each of the assignments submitted by groups in the workshop. This
will provide useful feedback to you. It will also to be helpful, I think, to see how others
approached the exercise.

HOW TO WRITE A LAB REPORT
Lab reports are an essential part of all laboratory courses. A lab report is how you explain what you did in an
experiment, what you learned, and what the results meant. You will be required to write a lab reports for labs.
Here is the standard format.
1. FORMAT/TITLE PAGE
The reports should be submitted in .pdf form and should be typed, in Times New Roman, 12 pt font and double
spaced. The title states what you did. It should be brief and should describe the main point/s of the experiment.
Include the following information:
a. The title of the experiment
b. Your name and the names of any lab partners
c. Your teacher’s name
d. The date the lab was performed
2. INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE
Usually the Introduction is one paragraph (5-6 sentences) that explains the objectives or purpose of the lab.
This should be where you state your hypothesis. This section should be written in complete sentences and
should connect lab concepts to class content. The introduction should provide background information on the
history of the concept tested, scientists, theories, and any laws tested in the experiment. It should also contain
any prior knowledge on which the experiment is based including explanations of principles, definitions,
experimental techniques, theories, and laws.
3. MATERIALS
List everything needed to complete your experiment and include the purpose of each item. This includes all
equipment, reagents, and computer programs used to complete the experiment. Drawing of the apparatus
set-up should be included in this section if needed.
4. PROCEDURE
List the steps you completed during your investigation. Be sufficiently detailed so that anyone could read this
Section and duplicate your experiment. Write it as if you were giving directions. Try to use an action verb at the
beginning of each sentence. Number your steps.
5. DATA
Numerical data obtained from you procedure usually is presented as a table. Data encompasses what you
recorded when you conducted the experiment. It is the facts only, not any interpretation of what they mean.
6. RESULTS + ANALYSIS
Results describe in words what the data means.
The Data section contains numbers. The Analysis section contains any calculations you made based on those
number. This is where you interpret the data and determine whether or not a hypothesis was accepted. This is
also where you would discuss any mistakes you might have made while conducting the investigation. You
might also wish to include ways this study might have been improved
**FIGURES & GRAPHS
Graphs and figures must both be labeled with a descriptive title. Label the axes on the graph, being sure to
include units or measurement. Your teacher will instruct you as to when graphs and figures are appropriate and
which ones to include
7. CONCLUSION
Conclusions are usually a single paragraph that sums up what happened in the experiment, whether your
hypothesis was accepted or rejected and what this means.

Final Project Guidelines and Grading Guide
Overview
The Final Project for this course is the creation of a Change Leader PowerPoint Presentation. The Change Leader PowerPoint Presentation will outline how you intend to incorporate our course learning into your career, and role as a change leader. The final product represents an authentic demonstration competency, because it will address the application of Kotter and Cohen’s eight-step change model to lead change within a specific organization. The project will be completed as One Milestone, which will be submitted in Module Eleven. You are strongly advised to apply the feedback from the eight change blogs to your Final Project.
Outcomes
To successfully complete this project, you will be expected to apply what you have learned in this course and should include the following course outcomes:
1. To understand the factors that must exist in order to facilitate “lasting or long term” change
2. To identify and apply the principles of organizational change
3. To utilize Kotter and Cohen’s eight-step model to effectively lead change
4. To apply several change theories to a variety of cases in order for students to “test” the application of theory to practice
5. To develop an understanding of the role that vision and strategy both play in developing and successfully implementing large-scale change
6. To identify and appreciate the scope involved in facilitating transformational change
7. To gain an understanding of how organizational change is achieved
8. To enhance personal capabilities and abilities for navigating change in our lives
Main Elements
The main element of this project will include a 10- to 12-slide PowerPoint presentation that shares how you will apply our course learning in your career as a change leader. The PowerPoint presentation will incorporate how you will apply the strategies learned in this course into your role as a change leader, including the following:
· How you will address Change Concepts, specifically the “drivers of change” within your organization and industry, and the reasons that individuals resist change (anger, fear, and complacency)
· How you will monitor your organization’s capacity for change (also referred to as “change readiness”)
· How you will train your organization on Kotter and Cohen’s eight-step change model, including use of the change fable and field guide
· How you will utilize Kotter and Cohen’s eight-step change model to lead change within your organization
· Any additional issues and/or concepts that further enlightened you as a change leader
Format
Milestone One:Change Leader PowerPoint Presentation
In Task11-2, you will submit a Change Leader PowerPoint Presentation. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all the main elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course on all tasks. This milestone will be graded using the Final Product Rubric.

Dissertation Structure Guidelines
It will be important to set some broad guidelines and ground rules as well as highlighting the dissertation structure that your supervisors would like their students to adhere to. Suffice to say these issues have already been highlighted and discussed with you in detail in your PRISM unit.
In summary, when you start working on your dissertation and develop your thinking and findings a bit more, you may wish to have a chat with your supervisor; a call or Skype or using some other online tool. Also a good idea to send your supervisor your chapters as you complete them so that they can provide their comments as you make progress on other chapters. However please consult your supervisor if he/she wishes to consider an alternative approach.
There is a document called Assessment Guidelines on this Moodle site that gives a very brief outline of the suggested chapters involved in your dissertation and an idea of the number of words that are usually expected in each chapter.
In the meantime, as far as your dissertation structure is concerned, let us just remind you that as a general rule, we would suggest the following chapters and sections for your thesis.
-Title: A clear, concise statement of the topic.
-Abstract: The abstract is a summary of the whole dissertation. It presents all the major elements of your work in a highly condensed form. Maximum of 500 words.
- Contents page: clearly describing chapters and any sub-sections and related page numbers.
- Acknowledgement- Chapter 1 - Introduction: You need to set the scene for your dissertation, tell a story by providing some background to the importance of your chosen subject. You should also make your aims and objectives of the report very clear, by for example providing half a dozen bullets clearly describing what you have in mind and what you wish to explore. You should clearly state your "Research Question (s)" and state why your research is important, what is the research gap, how it contributes to the body of knowledge and potentially it’s significance to the practitioner’s world, and, what benefit will be achieved in carrying out your chosen piece of work.
- Chapter 2 - Literature Survey (LR): This is a very important part of your dissertation (particularly if you only rely on acquiring secondary data and body of knowledge). The aim will be for you to provide robust and credible literature relating to the subject matter. Use of some models/frameworks is encouraged. You will also get a better mark by providing a sound critic in your LR, i.e. what you agree with and what you don't, and, the reasons behind your argument/rationale.
- Chapter 3 - Research Methodology: Here you should describe the methodology used in gathering the data and information. You should make reference to both the primary, if any, (interviews, questionnaire, case study ...) and, secondary research methods (literature review and library based work...). AUTOTROPHS & HETEROTROPHS
Autotrophs make their own food using energy they get directly from the environment, and carbon from inorganic sources such as CO
2
. By metabolic pathways of photosynthesis, plants and other autotrophs capture the energy of light and use it to build sugars from water and carbon dioxide. Heterotrophs get energy and carbon molecules from molecules that other organisms have already assembled.
Earth's early atmosphere held very little free oxygen, and chemoautotrophs were common. When the noncyclic pathway of photosynthesis evolved, oxygen released by photoautotrophs permanently changed the atmosphere, and it was a selective force that favored evolution of aerobic respiration. Photoautotrophs remove CO
2
from the atmosphere; the metabolic activity of most organisms puts it back. Human activities disrupt this cycle by adding extra CO
2
to the atmosphere. The resulting imbalance is contributing to global warming.
Can you do some additional research and find at least one specific heterotroph?

4).
THE EVOLUTION OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Life theoretically originated on Earth 3.4 to 4 billion years ago. The atmosphere was thin: composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Any gaseous oxygen had been used up in the combustion (or oxidation) of materials when the Earth was very hot.
The cooling water collected in pools, assimilating nutrients from the rocks. As water evaporated, the nutrients concentrated, forming a rich soup. The first organisms would have lived well off this food source, breaking down the complex molecules into water and carbon dioxide through respiration. Eventually, as life grew, the need arose to somehow re-synthesize complex compounds, both to eat and to use for structure and function. Some organisms learned how to use the Sun's energy to synthesize large molecules from small molecules. Other organisms learned to use other sources of reductive power. These organisms that have learned how to build the building blocks of life are called autotrophs, or self-feeders. Autotrophs are found in the bacterial and plant

ABC’s capital-asset procurement policy requires the Board of CAEs (BOD) approve any single acquisition over $150,000. If the board approves a project, then the treasurer will transfer the funds to the respective plant. Within one year, the internal auditing function is charged with reviewing each acquisition to check the propriety of the purchase and disbursal of funds.
ABC’s Plant Controller prepared the first proposal for a DEK cutting machine. Other plants were told to wait until internal auditing could inspect the documentation associated with the acquisition, and evaluate the project’s operating effectiveness and efficiency. The plant’s proposal was the second largest proposal ever submitted in the company’s history and it totaled $1.3 million dollars. The cost of the new machine by itself was listed in the proposal at $1.1 million. Labor and other costs necessary to remove the old machine and install the new machine totaled $200,000.
The internal auditor assigned to the investigation was Phil Ramone. Phil had been with ABC four years performing mostly production operational audits (on existing processes) and internal control payroll audits. Phil’s considerable experience in these areas led him to believe that the procedures associated with this capital-asset audit would be as simple and routine. This was not Phil’s first visit to the plant. In fact Phil had performed an audit on the plant’s payroll system only a year ago. Phil’s recollection of the experience was not a pleasant one. He had several confrontations with the plant controller, mostly as a result of personality clashes. While all the payroll issues were easily resolved, Phil felt there was still an adversarial relationship between him and the controller and was on guard for any preemptive strikes this time around by the controller.
It was a long drive to the plant so when Phil arrived a little late the day of his audit he was greeted by the controller with a perceived air of indifference and promptly led to a secluded office. The controller calmly explained that he was extremely busy and would answer any questions at the end of the day. Phil merely nodded his head and sat down in front of several tall piles of invoices, which the controller stated was the documentation supporting the purchase, set up, and testing of the new machine. Phil was somewhat surprised, fully expecting to see only a handful of invoices, but did not ask for any explanations. As Phil began looking through the myriad of statements and canceled checks he soon found one particular invoice near the top of the first pile that indicated the actual price paid for the machine itself was only $850,000.
Phil’s first reaction was to call the CAE of auditing. When he found .

Make a list of your own personality traits and then address the following questions:
How much, if at all, has your personality changed from the time you were in elementary school?
What specific people and/or events most shaped your personality over the last fifteen years of your life?
In terms of personality, which parent are you most like—your mother or your father—and in what ways?
After you consider these questions, discuss how, if at all, your answers may help to shed light on the “nature” versus “nurture”
Please also respond to my classmate's responses for 3-4 sentences. Here are my classmate's responses:
1. Since my elementary school career, I have drastically changed as a result of being exposed to more anxiety-provoking tasks. My personality has thereby been affected in a number of ways due to the aforementioned prospect. I have since become more organized and artistic due to my increasing creativity--since I have efficacy in visual arts. I have also become more mature, since I am always paying attention to my surroundings and what other people are thinking of me. However many benefits have come around, there are as many negative factors that have affected my personality. As described above, I am always affected by my social anxiety as well as always wanting to be in isolation as a result.
The people who have shaped my personality the most over the span of fifteen years are my parents. I have never acquainted myself with others during my schooling career, in which I would always join friend groups since I would be able to blend within the mix. My mother has allowed me to become more diligent over the span of a few years thereby allowing me to become more vulnerable as well as being independent. My mother also got me in the habit of practicing mindfulness and meditation--since she is a Zen psychologist. This in effect has also improved my mental health. As for my father, he would always follow up with my mother on such activities since he had also experienced loneliness in his working environment. While both myself and my father were going through such rigorous training, we were able to improve upon ourselves as well as monitoring each other during the process.
While I have many similarities to that of my father, my personality type closely resembles that of my mother. This is so since we both have similar mindsets and ideologies, her art also closely resembles that of my own. All the more, she developed in a similar form and fashion to that of my upbringing in which she also had anxiety in abundance while eventually being able to overcome such factors--a process that I have endured myself.
I believe that my anxiety is deeply rooted in the essence of who I am as a human being which has been given to me by both my mother and father. Both experienced separate levels of trepidation, one had social anxiety while the other was agoraphobic for a time. Another factor rela.

Major Paper #2--The Personal Narrative EssayA narrative is simpl.docxBetseyCalderon89
Major Paper #2--The Personal Narrative Essay
A narrative is simply a story. A personal narrative is a true story, focusing largely on the writer’s own life.
For Essay #2, the Personal Narrative, you will be writing a short essay (at least 3-4 pages in length) about a significant event in your own life. This event need not --and probably should not--be inherently, overly dramatic. Sometimes the most influential moments in our lives are smaller moments, events that we may not recognize as influential until years after the experience. In the personal narrative essay, you will want to tell the story as accurately as you can—search your deep memory—and tell the story from your own perspective. You will also want to exercise your selectivity as a writer, choosing to summarize background information/exposition, and really dramatize important scenes for the reader.
During the course of this unit, you will want to read the examples of the Personal Narrative in Chapter 2. You will want to start brainstorming ideas for your own personal narrative, and--by the end of Unit 5--you will want to have selected a significant event that you wish to focus on in this essay.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Elements of Story: Plot, Character, Setting, Dialogue The following four terms (plot, character, setting, and dialogue) are the four major elements of story. In other words, these are all essentials for your personal narrative.
1.) PLOT: A plot is a pattern of events or actions that lead to a change in a character or situation. In the case of this assignment, the plot of your essay should be limited to a key event or series of events that actually occurred in your real life, and resulted in some sort of change in your character, your relationships with others, your worldview, or your situation. Plot also always includes some kind of tension or conflict. This conflict may be external, between two people (for instance, a fist-fight with your brother, or a disagreement with your mother). In contrast, the conflict may be purely internal (for instance, a conflict between what you desire and your sense of morality). By the end of your essay, we should have some sense that the conflict has been dealt with somehow, if not entirely resolved.
2.) CHARACTER: A character is any person depicted on the page. We often think of characters in terms of fiction, characters “made-up” or “invented” by the author to further the story or illustrate a point. Even in fiction, however, characters are often based on real-life people. In your narrative essay, you yourself will become a character—even though you must remain true to the facts of your life, personality, etc.—just because you will be reproducing yourself on the page. As a readers, we’ll want to get a sense of who you are as a character on the page in the course of your essay. By the end of the essay, we will also want to know why/how your experience was significant. How did it change you?
To take it even further, beyond the scope of .

Major Paper #1-The Point of View Essay Deadline October 29, 2.docxBetseyCalderon89
Major Paper #1-The Point of View Essay
Deadline: October 29, 2015 at 11:59 pm
Purpose:
This paper assignment has several purposes. As the first major paper for this class, the Point of View Essay is designed to re-engage you with the fundamentals of all good writing, including using lush sensory details to show the reader a particular place (rather than tell them about it), basic organization, clear focus, etc. However, this unit does not function as a mere review. The Point of View Essay will also introduce you to the concept of "thinking and seeing rhetorically, and analyzing writing rhetorically"--using the Writer's Toolbox described in this unit to improve your writing and critical reading skills. Finally, the Point of View Essay allows you to reflect on this process.
The Assignment:
1. Pleasant/Unpleasant Description of the Place:
Choose a place you can observe for an extended period of time (at least 20-30 minutes). Use all of your senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, even taste if possible) to experience the place, and record all of the sensations that you experience. As you record your data, you may wish to note which details naturally seem more positive, negative, or neutral, in terms of tone. (For instance, a stinky and overflowing trash barrel swarming with flies in a nearby alley might seem more inherently negative than a little white bunny rabbit hopping playfully across the lawn.) Then, you will use this information to help your write descriptions of the place: one positive, one negative. Both descriptions should be factually true (same real time and real place), but you will want one description to be positive in terms of tone and the other to be negative. In addition to including the information and sensory details you've collected as the basis for these descriptions, you will also use the Writer's Toolbox to create your two contrasting impressions for this assignment. (The Writer's Toolbox is explained in the Lecture Notes section of this unit.) As you revise and refine your descriptions, please be sure you are "showing" your readers your place (really putting the readers "there" in the moment and in this scene), rather than simply "telling" them about it. You will also want to try to eliminate unnecessary linking verbs as much as you can, incorporating verbs that show "action" whenever possible.
2. Rhetorical Analysis:
Looking back at your descriptions, analyze how you created these two very different impressions of the place (one positive, one negative) without changing any of the facts. How did you make your place seem so positive in one paragraph and yet so negative in the other paragraph, without changing the facts? Discuss how you incorporated each of the tools from the Writer's Toolbox, and cite examples of this from each of your descriptions. (This analysis should be at least 400-500 words in length.)
3. Reflection:
In one to two paragraphs, cnsider at least one of the following questions.

Maintaining the Loyalty of StakeholdersTo maintain political, gove.docxBetseyCalderon89
Maintaining the Loyalty of Stakeholders
To maintain political, governmental, staff, and patient loyalty, the healthcare organization must provide a sense of organizational stability and view of the legislative landscape. In Chapters 14 and 15 we have researched and investigated the need to align both public opinion with staff trust. The political landscape is the basis for healthcare policy, guidance, state, local, and community support (both fiscal and legal) engaging in political trade-offs to stabilize the healthcare industry (such as in the cost, pharmaceuticals, insurance premiums, and organizational ROI in the healthcare industry). Healthcare organizations must provide the necessary guidance and advocacy for stakeholders in the setting of both state and federal legislature as a voice of reason, authority, and integrity. Provide information on the following:
Research a policy associated with the Affordable Care Act in your home state or another state that may affect healthcare reform and/or the way health care is provided in the chosen state.
Describe the policy and who wrote and/or promoted the policy legislature (provide statistical data).
What are the trade-offs offered to bring balance to the healthcare stakeholders?
What role have public perception and disinterestedness played in the valuation of healthcare performance?
Describe how process innovation, risk taking, health policy analysis, and governance “sense-making” provide balance for stakeholders.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

ETF1100 Business Statistics Group Assignment – 2021S1
1. ETF1100 Business Statistics
Group Assignment – 2021S1
A. How it works
• This project will be undertaken in small groups and involve
analysing a data set using the
approaches to quantitative problems you have learnt in this unit.
• The final product will be a set of presentation slides which
you will submit via Moodle by Friday
11pm on 14 May 2021 (the end of Week 10). A penalty of 10%
per day applies for late
submissions. The assignment should contain no more than 15
slides.
• The slides should show, in an interesting way, the main things
you have done and learned in
addressing the main question of the assignment. Usually, you
would present these slides to
your workshop members and tutor. However, given there is
some uncertainty around COVID-
19, and we have students in Melbourne and overseas, you will
not actually present the slides
this semester.
• The assignment is structured such that it gives groups some
freedom to explore the problem
in ways they see fit. There is no single correct answer for the
assignment. It is a research project
2. and different groups will approach things differently. This is
encouraged.
• Students have been put in groups based on their preferences.
All group members will generally
be enrolled in the same workshop. There will be around 5
members in each group (though
some groups may have more or less members than this). You
should get in touch with your
group members, organise to meet regularly and share ideas and
the workload. It can be
challenging, but also rewarding, to work in groups. The
assignment is aimed at building your
groupwork experience as well as fostering contact with your
peers in this unit. If you find you
are not in a group, then contact us as soon as possible. Also, it
is possible that some of your
allocated group members may have dropped the unit, or you
may find that your group
members may not be entirely cooperative. If you email someone
and do not get a response,
then proceed with the remaining group members.
• All group members must contribute to the assignment. There
will be an opportunity to give
feedback on the contributions of other members of your group,
and this feedback will be used
when allocating an individual’s final mark for this assessment.
If you do not participate fully in
the assignment, and cooperate with your group members, then
you should expect your grade
to be adjusted downwards as a result.
• The project is worth 18% of your final mark and your grade
will depend on the quality and
content of your presentation slides as well as your participation
3. in the assignment. See the
marking guide at the end of this document.
• You will receive written feedback on the assignment. In
addition, we will run a workshop where
the tutor will talk through each of the assignments submitted by
groups in the workshop. This
will provide useful feedback to you. It will also to be helpful, I
think, to see how others
approached the exercise.
• The exam for this semester will mostly use the same dataset
and explore similar and related
issues.
B. The Topic

countries of the world over the last few centuries. CO2
emissions are an important part of the story of
the human contribution to climate change. The idea is to use
techniques that we have been learning
about in this unit to study some patterns in CO2 emissions
across time and across countries. The main
focus is on how economic and population growth affect CO2
emissions, and on trends across time and
patterns across countries.
4. Below we describe the data and the kinds of analysis we would
like you to do. Once you complete the
analysis you will prepare a presentation where you show what
you have done. The presentation should
include some background of the issues, why you are studying
this topic, and what implications we can
draw from your analysis.
(ii) The Data
Your raw data can be downloaded into a spreadsheet file here:
https://github.com/owid/co2-data (use
the XLSX file)
As well as the data file, there is important information at this
link about how the different variables
are defined. You will need to study this carefully, because it
affects how you interpret the analysis you
undertake below.
Some technical notes:
• The data file is big file (~6MB), and we will not ask you to
analyse all the data, as it covers more
than 200 countries over hundreds of years, so has many many
thousands of rows. Instead,
each section of the analysis requires you to extract a part of the
dataset. Take that subset of
the data to a new file and do your analysis on that file. In the
end, you should have an Excel
file for each Part below.
• Often you do not have all the data you need for a particular
analysis – perhaps not all the years
5. are available, or all the countries. You need to just do your
analysis for the dataset you have
available (e.g., just a subset of the countries, or not using all
the years). Sometimes this involves
rearranging rows of the data, or just selecting specific rows or
columns. Be very careful when
you do these kinds of operations.
• Some of the “countries” are not actually Countries, like
“Africa”, “Asia”, “World”, etc. These
are totals across a group of countries (e.g., a continent). When
you do the analysis in Part C,
you will need to make sure you only include real countries, so
check the list carefully.
C. The Tasks
Please read this part of the document carefully. Here we outline
various tasks we would like you to do.
They are in separate sections, so your group can share them
among yourselves. In each case we give
you some guidance about what to do, but there is also some
freedom for you to choose what data to
focus on, or how you will analyse it. The idea is to do these
tasks and analysis, then work on a
presentation that explains what you have done and discusses
what it all means.
Please note that the assignment should contain no more than 15
slides. This is a strict maximum. Also,
make sure that the font is a reasonable size, so it is easily
readable in presentation mode. A common
minimum font size for presentation slides is 20pt. You can use a
slightly smaller font for tables of data
6. or figures. But it must be readily readable. What these
constraints will mean is that you need to think
very carefully about what you do and do not include in your
slides.
My advice is to divide your presentation up in 5 parts as
follows:
Part 1: Introduction (2 slides)
Create a slide with the title of your project and the full names
and student numbers of your group
members. On your second slide outline the contents of the
presentation. You may also want to outline
the issues and broadly how you are going to address them. You
could also (very briefly) summarize
your conclusions.

Part 2: The World Situation Over Time (~4 slides)
Take the data for the “country” called World. This is the total
for the variables across all countries. You
can get the World data by filtering the data and selecting just
World in the Country column. Once you
have the relevant rows, copy these to a new Excel file and
analyse this data. Here are some suggestions
for what you might do:
• Take a look at the most recent year of data, and look at total
CO2 emissions, then at emissions
from coal, gas, oil and other sources. Find a way to present the
information about the different
7. sources of CO2 emissions.
• Plot a time series chart of CO2 emissions across time and
describe its features.
• Run a regression with CO2 emissions as the dependent
variable, and a linear time trend as the
independent variable. Can you think of a better way to capture
the trend, as the linear trend
over the whole time period does not look appropriate? Perhaps
you can include both time and
time squared in the model to capture the nonlinear relationship
with time.
• Once you have a sensible time series model for the trend in
CO2 emissions, use that model to
predict what emissions will be in 2050 and 2100, and then
compare these with the experts are
saying needs to happen to CO2 emissions over the next few
decades. Is there any sign of
slowing of the trend in recent years, based on your data here?
• Run a regression with CO2 emissions for the World as the
dependent variable, and a set of
independent variables: World population, World GDP per capita
(you will need to calculate
this variable and use a subset of the data because these variables
are missing in the early
years). Think carefully about what you learn from this
regression and include your analysis in
your slides.
Part 3: Study a Particular Country (~4 slides)
Select a country to study. Make sure it is one with plenty of
8. data over several years on the variables
we are interested in. Here are some suggestions for what you
might do:
• Tell us a little about this country compared to the rest of the
world: size, location, GDP,
population, GDP per capita, CO2 emissions per capita, and its
share of total CO2 emissions.
• Take a look at the most recent year of data, and look at total
CO2 emissions, then at emissions
from coal, gas, oil and other sources. Find a way to present the
information about the different
sources of CO2 emissions. How does this mix compare to what
you found for the World (Part
2)?
• Plot a time series chart of CO2 emissions across time and
describe its features.
• Run a regression with CO2 emissions as the dependent
variable, and a linear time trend as the
independent variable. Compare the model and time series graph
for this country to the overall
World situation (Part A). You may also want to include ‘time
squared’ in your time series model
if the series is nonlinear. Maybe it is worth looking at growth
rates to help with this
comparison: are emissions for your country growing faster or
slower than the World growth?
Are things different in more recent years?
• Run a regression with CO2 emissions as the dependent
variable, and a set of independent
variables: population, GDP per capita. Compare your model
with the World model from Part
9. 2.
Part 4: Cross Country Models as of 2016 (~4 slides)
Create a dataset that has one row for each country,
corresponding to the 2016 values for that country.
[Why 2016? Because this is the most recent year for which a
good number of countries have GDP data.]
(Using filtering on the Year column is the easiest way to do this
but make sure you drop non-countries
like “Africa”. Note that it generally seems that if the variable
“iso_code” is missing then it is not a
country). Now you can perform some “cross country analysis”,
as of 2016. Here are some suggestions
for what you might do:
• Have a look at some of the characteristics of 2-3 interesting
variables and compare these
across countries. Be aware of appropriate standardisation in
making such comparisons. You
might consider things like the share of coal or oil in CO2
emissions (variations in how much
countries depend on these resources), CO2 per unit of energy
(comparing the types of energy
countries use), etc.
• Run a series of regressions with the same set of independent
variables: population, and GDP
per capita (which you will need to calculate). But consider 3
different dependent variables:
o CO2 emissions
o CO2 emissions per capita (you will need to calculate and
10. perhaps rescale this variable)
o CO2 emissions per GDP (you will need to calculate and
perhaps rescale this variable)
Think carefully about what you learn from these models, and
from the similarities and differences.
Part 5: Summary and conclusions (~1 slide)
Provide a summary and some brief conclusions regarding what
you have done. This could also address
some of the weaknesses of your analysis and/or the data and
some uncertainties about your results.
You may also want to discuss the implications of your findings
for government and society.
D. Assessment Criteria
There are two primary components as to how your presentation
will be assessed: (1) content, (2)
presentation. Both are worth 9 marks out of 18 marks. In
addition, you will give feedback to your group
members—this is the group participation aspect of the
assessment criteria. We will adjust your grade
based on the feedback of your groupmates. These various
aspects of the assessment process are listed
below:
(1). Content (9 marks)
• The statistical analysis was correctly implemented, a range of
techniques were used,
it was clearly explained, with valid interpretations.
11. • The statistical analysis undertaken is well linked to the overall
conclusion/theme/message of the presentation.
(2). Presentation (9 marks)
• The presentation follows a logical flow, and clear and logical
conclusions/themes/main points are evident.
• The results are interpreted correctly, and conclusions are well
justified
(3). Group participation (used for mark adjustment if it appears
a group member has not
contributed based on the responses of other group members)
• You will receive an email using the TEAMMATES software
system after you have
completed the assignment, i.e. a couple of days after the due
date. You will be asked
if each member of your group contributed sufficiently to the
group project. If a large
portion of the group indicates that a person did not make a
reasonable contribution,
then that person’s mark may be adjusted downward.
• If your group experiences major difficulties working together
on the project, please
contact a member of teaching staff to discuss the situation.
Each of the two main criteria will be graded on a scale from 0
to 9. The following table includes the
sorts of comments that we would associate with the respective
grades.
