“Speak, friend, and enter” – Labyrinths, symbolic spaces, and gated communities in university libraries
“‘What does it mean by speak, friend, and enter?’ asked Merry. ‘That is plain enough’, said Gimli. ‘If you are a friend speak the password, and the doors will open, and you can enter.’”
Library spaces can work as gated communities, labyrinths, and access deniers: They hinder users in navigating through the information architecture built of rooms, shelves and books. If a user hasn’t enough library experience, he/she will get lost within the library building. But for those who succeed, library spaces often are symbolic spaces. They appropriate the spaces: they understand and modify the social and material environment by for instance choosing a favourite (work)place and (re-)arranging the furniture. They develop a feeling of belonging and ownership over ‘their spaces’.
Using a mix of methods of user experience research and ethnography like participant observation, interviews, and mental maps, I conducted a comparative case study among university libraries in Europe. My presentation will illustrate some of the results and trace the used methods along examples from the data material. The aim is to give an insight in possibilities to investigate and improve library spaces.

In this session, Andreas Hiltner, Lead Software Engineer from Cincom Systems, Inc., will be testing graphical user interface applications using Cincom Smalltalk™. Features in this demonstration include: recording and replaying events, showing Smalltalk code to perform mouse/keyboard input and taking screenshots to compare with previously recorded templates.
Bio: Andreas Hiltner is currently a Lead Software Engineer for Cincom® ObjectStudio®, and has a hand in many aspects of VM, base image and database development. He works from home near Nuremberg, Germany, where he just recently returned after spending five years with his family in the US at Cincom’s headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Along with many contributions to ObjectStudio over the years, he was the project lead in Cincom’s development of the current 8.x versions of ObjectStudio, built on the Cincom Smalltalk Foundation. Andreas is a seasoned architect who has specialized in ObjectStudio for more than 15 years. In his years of working with Cincom®, he has had the opportunity to assist key Cincom Smalltalk™ users worldwide including one of the world’s top five financial institutions, and several government agencies. Andreas also accepted the responsibility of being the technical lead for ObjectStudio's Next Generation GUI Project.

Abstract: In the 15 years since I last presented my 'XP-rience' of
eXtreme Programming to ESUG, I've had a lot more experience: of
working in partly and wholly not-colocated teams; of how I and others
actually think while doing XP; of the disadvantages and positive
advantages of non-colocation; of what is most used and most needed in
tools. This talk will let you (and me) discover if I've learned
anything in the last decade and a half.
Bio: Niall ended his undergraduate career with two intellectual
interests: computing and the theory of relativity. A quick check of
how much commercial work was available to relativity and gravitation
theorists made him decide to do academic research in that field and
then seek a commercial job in computing, rather than the other way
round. Niall started working commercially in IT in 1985. At first, he
was assigned to designing and implementing software engineering
process improvements; only after three years did he begin significant
writing and delivery of commercial software. This experience taught
him that intelligent people can form foolish ideas about software
engineering if they have not worked at the coding coalface of real,
large commercial projects.
Learning from this, Niall spent the nineties working on software to
manage complex, rapidly changing telecoms networks. A side effect of
this work was that it taught him much about how scale and rate of
change affects software. Early in the nineties, he discovered
Smalltalk. The more he used it the more he came to recognize its power
in this area. This perception was strengthened when he spent a year
delivering a telecoms management system in Java.
At the end of the decade, Niall formed his own software company to
offer consultancy in meta-data system design, Smalltalk and agile
methods. Over the next decade, he worked on a variety of
meta-data-driven systems, mostly in the financial domain.
Niall joined the Cincom Smalltalk Engineering Team nearly eight years
ago. His first task was to lead the team that does the weekly
VisualWorks builds - an experience he likened to doing brain surgery
on yourself every Friday (e.g., "Prepare new memory for insertion,
remove old memory … uh, I can't remember what I was going to do
next!").
Currently, he leads the Glorp and Database team. He also leads the
Custom Refactoring open-source project, which he co-founded, and the
SUnit open-source project.

Bio: Arden Thomas started using Smalltalk in 1986, when he was
researching and exploring better ways to do software development. He
found it! Smalltalk and object-oriented were such a profound
improvement for doing software development, that he made a full
commitment to using Smalltalk. Arden used Smalltalk in his
post-graduate work thesis and projects. Prior to becoming Cincom’s
Smalltalk product manager, Arden has done Smalltalk work for IBM,
Parcplace Systems, ParcPlace-Digitalk, ObjectShare, and a hedge fund
in a number of capacities including; lead developer, trainer,
architect, consultant, and sales SE. When not working with Smalltalk,
Arden can be found cycling, officiating at swim meets, or attending
events with his family and children. This year Arden became certified
as a USA-swimming referee after years as a stroke-and-turn and
starting official.
smalltalkCI: A Continuous Integration Framework for Smalltalk Projects
SmalltalkCI is a continuous integration framework that allows Smalltalk projects to be tested on services like TravisCI. It works by running a Smalltalk image and project files from a repository and running tests with each push. SmalltalkCI is lightweight, compatible with multiple dialects, and supports debugging and testing of projects like Seaside. Future work includes adding more Smalltalk implementations and virtual machines, improving Git support, and simplifying initial setup.

engineering, such as modeling, source code generation and model reengineering, validations, and more. One of our aims is to provide a platform that is not
only easy to use, but also easy to extend by end-user-developers to support their specific domain needs. We will present the current state of the tool on
a range of models: UML Class Diagrams in the context of Cormas — an agent-based simulation platform, OntoUML used for conceptual modeling, and BORM and
DEMO for business and enterprise engineering.
Bio: I am a student at FIT CTU (Faculty of Information Technology at Czech Technical University), and also a member of CCMi (Centre for Conceputal

This presentation will demonstrate several of the modern native Windows user interface capabilities that are now part of Cincom Smalltalk using ObjectStudio’s all Smalltalk Next Generation UI.
Andreas will demonstrate the new workspace for Cincom Smalltalk ObjectStudio, manipulation of the window screenshots shown in the Windows taskbar, and other examples that display the power of having full Windows API control from Smalltalk.

Coding is quickly gaining traction as an essential digital skill in the 21st century, and many public libraries are offering coding classes for youth and adults as a way of promoting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The challenge is that coding is often a new skill for librarians and library staff who are responsible for offering programs. The good news is that you don’t have to be an expert in computer science to offer effective educational programs that teach coding skills. There are many free resources that can be used as a guide to starting a coding club at your library, no experience required.

Using Web Archives for Studying Cultural Heritage Collaborative Platforms
In the last few years, cultural institutions have launched several experiments in order to transform their registers into transparent, open and participative documents available on the web. All these platforms introduce new ways of collaborative management of cultural heritage through the creation of participative pages corresponding to the inventory records directly on Wikipedia or on ad hoc platforms. This communication aims at studying these new forms of collaborative management of cultural heritage based on the use of wiki platforms. Past studies on this topic are organized mainly around two poles: analyses of computer and technical solutions, on the one hand, and researches on changes in the relationship between institutions and publics, on the other hand. Differently, this study is meant to focus on cultural heritage and notably on the collaborative digital writing around heritage objects that take shape on the web. Our ideal goal would be to study, through a historical perspective, how cultural heritage objects included in these inventories have evolved in the last few years as an effect of their opening on the web through wiki platforms. The objects will not be considered in relation to the inventory record, but as digital objects resulting from the editorialization processes involving heritage professionals, but also other users of the web.

ShowUs: PharoJS.org Develop in Pharo, Run on JavaScript

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
