ESTRATEGIES TO
READING
ALBERTO ORTIZ SOLANO – A01422213
METHODS
• The pointer method. Swept a finger along the line when you read. This became
known as the Pointer method, and is also sometimes called "hand pacing" or
"meta guiding.“
• The scanning method. "Scanning" involves moving your eyes quickly down the
page – often down the center – and identifying specific words and phrases as you
go. These can be key sentences (often the first sentence of each paragraph),
names, numbers, or trigger words and ideas. Learning to expand your peripheral
vision can help with this.
METHODS
• How to improve your speed reading. Knowing the "how" and "when" of speed
reading is only the first step to success. Here are some more tips to help you:
• Avoid distractions.
• Go easy Read a simple online article.
• Cover words that you’ve already read This helps you to stop your eyes flitting
back to earlier.
• Know what you want from the text.
• Practice and practice.
METHODS
• Learn the ‘art’ of skipping. Our brain can understand concepts without having to
read all.
By knowing ‘what’ to skip, you can read more faster while obtaining the essential
information.
• One can think that slow reading is the best option to understand a text but, it is
the other way around since when reading fast, our brain understands and stores
information better.
METHODS
• Direct your thoughts. One bad habit is daydreaming—we think about the
weirdest things when we are reading. Our mind wanders off on a tangent.
Daydreaming is something that everybody does—there is no point in stopping it.
Instead: turn it into something that helps you with comprehension.
• Stop subvocalizing while you read. When we read, we mouth along to the words.
At this rate, you read 150 words per minute, which is the same as your talking
speed. Research shows that your brain can process up to 400 words per minute.
By stopping the habit of mouthing the words, you can increase the number of
words you process by 200%!
