ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS
    OF HOUSEHOLDS
Summary of Essential Elements
from In Pursuit of the Sunbeam
by Steve Shields and LaVrene Norton
The following 10 elements are necessary to
         transform Nursing Homes into Households

             • The Household is each resident’s
     1 home & sanctuary

             • The People who live here direct
2 their own lives, individually and
               collectively.

• The boundaries of the Person
3 and his/her home are clear and
respected as a matter of course

    • Grace, a shared sense of what is
sacred about the house and its
4 people, is deeply
      valued, consciously created &
      preserved.
Essential Elements

       • The people who live are loved and
served by a responsive, highly valued
5 self-led service team that has
         responsibility and authority.

       • Leadership is a characteristic, not a
         position. Leaders support and are
         supported by values driven, resource
6 bearing principles and practices as a
way for each person to actualize his
         or her full potential.
Essential Elements
       • All systems, including treatments, exist
         to support and serve the
7 person, within the context of his or her
         life pursuits.

       • We build strong community with one
another, our family, our neighbors and
8 our town. Each household is part of a
         neighbor-hood of houses, dedicated to
         continuous learning
Essential Elements
       • The physical building and all its
amenities are designed to be a true
9 home.Institutional creep in design and
culture is treated as a wolf at the door.

       • The establishment of a healthy and
         sustainable home comes through the
         integrated balance of resident-driven
  10 life, leadership, organizational
         structure, physical environment and
         financial sustainability.
