1. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class
has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college
writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt
limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays
to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is
why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the
first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate
my voice more in my essays and I believe...show more content...
The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of
the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I
usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my
grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how
many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including
work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write
essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even
though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge
about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve
include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has
definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I
have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do
not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not
find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have
significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too

2. Write An Essay About My Writing Process
An essay is a section of writing that systematically examines and assesses a subject matter or
concern. Basically, an essay is intended to get an individual's educational view on a specific
material. The essay can be true–life. Meaning the author of the essay is trying to say the fact, not
only amuse you. A decent lengthy essay ought to be made up of an introductory paragraph and
visibly state the subject matter to be discussed in the main body. The points should be plainly
specified in individual paragraphs and illustrated or warranted. A closing paragraph summarizes
the key facts of the paper, in which you repeat your view or give a stable thought of the subject
matter. My previous essays were missing some of the material mentioned. For example, I would
watch television and try to write an essay or I would limit the amount of words used on my essay
paper. In what type of environment do you do your best writing? In my computer room. How would
you...show more content...
This may sound strange, but I tend to write better when I am under pressure. Therefore, I would
not recommend any one to write a paper the way I do. I also understand that this is the way
teachers tell you not to write a paper. I printed the quick guide to grammar and usage called
Writing Elements by Timothy P. Goss and Sabrina M. Goss. First, I would use the clarity and style
because it doesn't matter how many extraordinary words I can place into a paragraph. Because if
the person reading the paper doesn't understand what I am writing he or she will be bored and not
understand what I am talking about. Writing papers with clarity and style are vital fundamentals in
any written information. Another one is the writing process. This is a process of creating an essay
by using drafting, publishing, editing, revising, pre– writing, and final

3. Homemade Food Is The Best Choice
Cooking and eating is always fun, especially homemade food. Food is one of the primary
necessities of humans and also plays a vital role in maintaining good health. People work hard to
eat; it does not matter if it is healthy or not, but healthy eating prevents a variety of health problems.
For some people eating is an option, but for others they live to eat. People enjoy cooking their own
meals; it gives us peace of mind, satisfaction, and a guarantee of cleanliness. Homemade food is
always treated as a privilege, especially with our hectic life schedules. Now a days, people seldom
cook at home and find a good reason to go out and eat. There are many different choices when it
comes to food, but homemade food is the best choice...show more content...
They all love homemade food instead of fast food because they say it is delicious. Talking with
people who cook at home, most stated that they make fresh ingredients at home, like grind and
powder all seasonings and curries, so it gives the best flavor, taste, and smell. According to
British Broad Casting, The World Health Organization recommends greatly reducing the intake
of processed foods, because it is not freshly made and people do not know how long it is been in
the freezer or what all ingredients in it (World). Eating at our own kitchen table allow us to eat
more fresh fruits and vegetables so we can focus on all natural ingredients. Most of the people
who cook at home have their own kitchen garden also, so all the vegetables are fresh and organic.
This gives us a great satisfaction and peace of mind that it is fresh cooked meals from our own
garden to the table. The second reason to eat homemade food is that it helps to improve our health.
Before the wide spread availability of fast food restaurants, people always cooked their meals at
home; because of this, they were healthier and lived longer. There were not so many diseases like
myocardial infarction, diabetes, or hypertension; it is so popular now due to not controlling their diet
or eating out all the time. These disease conditions not only affect our health but it also affects our
economy. Unfortunately, many young adults or their

4. Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be
where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on
the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths
that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an
English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do
that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content...
I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your
own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I
was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this
technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I
was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could
use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I
used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even
go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident
as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that
shaped me into the writer I am

7. Reflection Of Creative Writing
It is my belief that through this class and the tools provided, that my growth as a writer has grown
through leaps and bounds I would never have assumed possible. It is not so much the skill I refer
to, although I would think skill has gone up in some levels as well, but more so the appreciation for
the craft of writing itself. Intially, at the start of this class my sole goal was to further my
understanding and appreciation of the writer's and books that I so love to read. Through further
evaluation within the first week, a few other goals came to mind, of which were, making writing
a habit, finishing what I start, stop second guess my writing skills and making effective use of
detail and description. Through the use of the many articles, various reading materials, whether
poems or short stories, and especially through the workshop, I feel I was able to really push
myself to accomplishing these goals. I have thus far learned how important it is not to be skilled
at writing per say, but to have the will to write, that poetry is as much about it's sound as it is about
it's subject, just how important character development is, how the narration and point of view of a
story is essential to the way the story is told, and just how much of a difference peer's critiques can
make to your writing.
Since before the beginning of this creative writing course, I have always struggled to find a point to
writing. By this, I mean that I always felt that having great skill and talent was what was required
to be a writer, let alone a great one. From this point, I felt there was no need to continue my
writing as I felt that in a sense it just wasn't good enough. However, reading the article "A Way of
Writing", I found new hope. Here was a writer who says things such as "I must be willing to fail. If
I am to keep on writing, I cannot bother to insist on high standards. I must get into action and not let
anything stop me, or even slow me much"(Stafford) and quotes that writers don't necessarily have
any special talent. The article "Why I Write" instilled further optimism through the authors view on
just being a writer, not focusing on being good or bad. I found her words in which she writes
"entirely to find out what I'm

8. Essay My Thoughts on Writing
My Thoughts on Writing
The only thing I care about; the only thing I hope to get from this course, is some improvement in
my ability to write what I think –– explain ideas and feelings to other people. I don't give a damn
about anything else, and so far I haven't been disappointed. At the beginning of the course I was
informed that we were going to be discussing exposition, which isn't so much a kind of writing as a
purpose or attitude behind it. This purpose is to explore, unfold, or develop an idea or issue. And the
sense I've gotten from our discussion is that the attitude is one of intellectual honesty, of dedication
to learning something and reporting what's there , instead of protecting preconceived notions or
projecting agendas...show more content...
A friend of mine has already graduated from a university, and she recently went through a whole
crate of papers she wrote in the process. She told me she couldn't remember what many of them
were about; couldn't even remember writing most of them. We've talked about "themewriting"as
something written for and from a closed environment: a mini–universe apart from everyday life, with
its own abbreviated rules, in which oversimplification is acceptable. When I consider the sheer
tonnage of the stuff that's written every midquarter and finals week around here, it sure seems that
most of it is intended to, deserves to, and does head right for the wastebasket immediately when it's
of no further use in that universe: after it's recorded in the grade book. "Commitment" is a term
applied to solid exposition, and themewriting frequently lacks it.
Does anyone like to do this –– does it provide a warm, human, joyous feeling of having made
contact and saying something Important? Or do we just get comfortable doing it? Like being an
accountant: is there a real sense of joy to be found in adding up columns of figures? There may be
some people who would tell me "sure, it's fun," but I think actually they're just feeling safe in a sort
of half–sleep state which isn't exactly happy and may in fact be miserable, but at least is stable.
There may be a different kind of warmth, reserved for "a job well done," and "I might get a
promotion," and most especially: "I feel good

9. Essay on Writing Experience
My Writing Experiences My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the
basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things
like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the
future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers,
documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. I
predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college. Writing in the past started in
kindergarten. My teacher taught me how to write my name over and over until I could write it with
no errors. All through elementary my teachers taught me...show more content...
I need to learn to quit thinking as much on what I want to write about and how to write about a topic
and just starting jotting stuff down in outline form as it comes to mind. Run–ons and fragments I
need to be able to spot and fix right away or I really need to not have any in my papers at all. My
goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or
have more data or even have to rethink my whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge
to be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs, essays,
and maybe even books. To have excellent skills in writing will definitely be a great advantage in
my nursing profession. In nursing, I will have to do lots of charting on my patients. I will have to
do health presentations on various subjects such as exercising, how our society eats, and sex
education if I want to be a course instructor. Researching information on all of those topics I will
have to make sure I do an excellent job on and collect accurate information and statistics so that I
can compare to other sources. Dictating to the doctor means that I will need to write properly so
that he understands what I am saying. Other nurses will have to be able to understand what I am
talking about by my writing skills when doing shift changes. I will have to be very precise so that
other nurses will not

11. My Writing Essay
My Writing
In the past four years, I have written many papers for various classes, enjoying some and others
having to choke out words to write down. In this memo I will describe my writing projects and
how they made me become a better writer, and how they will continue to help develop me into a
becoming a more prosperous writer.
What I Really Learned in English 100
Well as a recent pupil of the Great McFadden I want to do all that I can to be on his good side, for he

Having taken many writing classes I have learned many things about writing. I enjoy writing and
can often write many pages about things that I am interested in. I know that I have more learning to
do about writing, and hopefully in the next couple weeks my knowledge of writing will have
expanded and my writing will have improved.
My Experience With Writing Arguments
I am unaware of any writing arguments. The only thing I can really think of is writing a research
paper with the intent to change people's minds on a certain subject. I remember researching for
weeks in the library, looking through magazine after magazine. I had searched for enough
information to write a ten–page paper. The writing process of the paper took several weeks but
when I had finished, all the hard work was worth the effort. I learned many things from that course
such as that you need to search for all the information you can because it is better to have too much
information than not enough. Also that course taught me many things about making references to
the authors of the articles I used for my paper. I remember writing out note card after note card and
keeping all the necessary information about each book or magazine. That course taught me to
become a better writer and to respect how much detail really goes into a research paper like I had
written. Other than that, I have not really had much experience in

12. How My Writing Has Changed Essay
My writing styles have changed drastically over the past four years of high school. This memo will
explain how my writing has changed and how my knowledge of writing has improved.
Aspects of My Writing during High School
During my English courses throughout high school, I learned many things from writing simple
journals, research papers, and a single term paper. During high school, I was laid back and
procrastinated for much of my work. During the latter part of high school when I wrote my term
paper my senior year, I found out that working a little every night writing a few paragraphs helped
me out greatly. I was not just throwing something together just to get the grade and the paper
finished. I spent time on the paper and...show more content...
I do this so the information is true, and also in order from which events have occurred. When I
wrote my term paper my senior year I was well organized. I was required to write about an event
in history. I chose India Uprising of 1877 as the topic of my paper. This topic was not interesting at
all, but I chose to write about it. When I finished writing my thesis and outline, I wrote note cards
about the different topics, which allowed me to gather all my information and organize it in which
different events occurred. When I was finished with the paper, it sounded and read consistently and it
all flowed together.
How These Experiences Prepared Me for College Writing
I have written many different types of papers for all of my classes throughout high school. For
my science classes, I have written several labs in the form of essays. Writing the essays was
different for me because I did not really know that science had much to do with writing. It took me
a while to gather all the information I needed to finish my lab assignments. Writing lab reports will
definitely help me in my science courses in the next four years.
The journals I have written came from my four years of high school English. Everyday I came to
class there would be a topic on the board. I took five minutes each day to write about the given
topic. It was brainstorming and giving our input on whatever the topic was. I think

13. Essay on Effective Writing Is Important
Effective Writing is Important
I have become to notice, through my coursework, that writing well is a tool that everyone can
benefit from. Good writers will tell of many an occasion in which their talent has earned them
advancement; an advancement that comes to play not only in the job market but also for personal
gratification.
Fortunately, writing is a skill that can be both taught and practiced to a point at which virtual
perfection is reached. The many facets of writing can seem quite overwhelming to the novice. The
aspect of writing that most people are unaware of is the fact that it is actually broken down into just
a few basic principles. Because of the many benefits that proper voice, structure, and thesis
development bring to...show more content...
Voice is the key to getting the reader involved in anessay. Without it, the reader becomes passive
and the essay can not be comprehended. Most essays have the essential material, so the manner in
which the material is presented can make a difference. When voice is properly executed in an
essay, the reader can interact with the writing and make the necessary connections. The best
sportswriters in the country are experts in using voice. How else can one become involved in the
action? Without voice, a play by play description can become a tedious mass of words. Voice is a
logical facet of writing which, when properly executed, leads the path to effective writing.
Effective structure is a necessity in essay writing. Without it, a capable piece of writing can
become a nebulous maze of imperfection. Structure acts as a road map for the reader. When the
reader can follow the essay's structure, the essay as a whole becomes easier to comprehend. The
reader can follow the essay logically and therefore does not have to fill in his own gaps.
When a reader can read without stumbling across deformities, he is at bliss and proper structure can
lead to this bliss.
Finally, the actual development of the thesis is a key to effective writing. Again, the reader is
always the primary focus and the writing must adhere to his needs. The thesis statement provides a
basis for the essay; a basis for the reader. Once

14. Global Warming and Climate Change Essay
Global warming and the greenhouse effect are issues discussed by scientists all the time. A natural
process that keeps earths temperature at a livable rate is called the greenhouse effect. The energy
from the sun warms up the earth when the rays from the sun are absorbed by greenhouse gasses. The
gasses then become trapped in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous
oxide are the most common greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gases cause the radiant heat of the sun to
be trapped in the Earths lower atmosphere which causes global warming. If there weren't any
greenhouse gasses, the earth would be really cold due to very little sun rays being absorbed on the
earth. Global warming can and...show more content...
Every time the temperature keeps rising, the more carbon dioxide will be released. When this
process gets going, it is very hard to keep in control. Methane is another greenhouse gas. Methane is
a greenhouse gas whose molecules absorb heat trying to escape to space. Natural sources include
wetlands, swamps and marshes, termites, and oceans. (Methane) Methane gases are released into the
atmosphere. Atmospheric methane has doubled since the Industrial Revolution and has "contributed
20 percent to the enhancement of the greenhouse effect, second only to carbon dioxide". (Methane)
A major effect of global warming is there will be higher temperatures and it will affect how the
water cycle works. Places on the earth will receive more rain than others. There will be a great
amount of evaporation going on from the rivers, lakes and oceans due to a increase in the
temperature. This could be a good thing for some people needing rain and a bad thing for other
people who get to much rain. While the temperature is on the rise there will be greater amount of
rains all over. In return with all of the rains this could help farmers. It would extend the growing
season for crops. This would greatly help out the farmers because they would be making more
money. While this is the positive side of the rain, this could also hurt the farmers. There are some
crops that out there that will die with to much rain. There

The Painting
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a
thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing
center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so
enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay,
where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away
that I wanted to write about the painting. I don't know why, but I felt that the painting was describing
the way I felt at that moment.

The grass was spread out through the whole painting. If you looked hard enough you can see
flowers of pink and red growing within the grass. There were spots of yellow in the grass making
the grass look as though it was dying. Then the painting had a patch of grass that had a very
vibrant shade of green, that made the grass look so alive. The grass had a willowy quality that may
have suggested that there may have been a breeze.
The river also suggested a breeze, there were ripples that flowed southeast. There were many
different shades of blue in the lake and river. The lake had a darker shade of light blue surrounded
by a dark blue then lined with black. The lake appeared to have a light shining either on top or the
bottom of it, which allowed you to see the grass growing under it. The river had a lighter shade of
light blue with white lines to show the ripples but it was surrounded with the same colors as the
lake. You did not see any grass growing under the river because there was no light shining on the
river.
When I saw the painting for the first time it grabbed my attention. At first I thought it was the
beautiful colors that attracted me to the painting, but it was more. In the picture the shadowy men
look scared. They looked as though they were trying to run away from something and this lake that
forms into this river that is surrounded by tall grass is the way out, or at least a place to hide until
the coast is clear. During that time in my life I felt

16. Who Are You As A Writer? Essay
When presented with the question, "who are you as a writer?", I was speechless at first. But after
thinking about it, I realized who I am as a writer has been influenced by so many different
sponsors throughout my life and there was not a short, concrete answer. Brandt mentions that
"literacy is sponsored by people, institutions, and circumstances that both make it possible for a
person to become literate and shape the way the person actually acquires literacy." (Brandt 43)
My attitude towards writing has been influenced by teachers, both negatively and positively, by
my mother, and by academic assignments over the years. My answer to the question can only be
answered by a narrative of my writing life. I have convinced myself that I am a terrible writer,
and when presented with a writing assignment, I get anxious instantly. I see writing as a burden
and a huge obstacle that gets placed in my life. Academic writing is not fun, but something I
value due to the fact that we are a grade driven society. When writing, I write to the guidelines in
order to receive points for the requested criteria. The reason being, I gave up on expressing my
own ideas because I had been shut down by so many teachers throughout my education. I tried to
write down what came to my mind and put my own twist on things, but that was not the "right"
way to write papers. In order to make both my teachers and my grades happy, I wrote what they
wanted to hear, and even then I was not to the level they

It shows you how many beats are in a measure and which note gets the beat. How to read a time
signature is pretty easy. The top number shows how many beats are in the measure and the
bottom number shows what note gets the beat. So that means that the one on the poster is saying
that there are 6 beats per measure and the eighth note gets the beat. Now that you know about the
time signature I will tell you about the 3 basic notes. First is the whole note. The whole note
when played in 4/4 time has 4 beats and takes up the whole measure. The whole note is equal to 2
half notes. A half note in 4/4 time has 2 beats. Next one whole note, and 2 half notes equal 4
quarter notes. A quarter note when played in 4/4 time equals 1 beat. Although it isn't on the
poster this continues. Finally to understand basic music you need to know about key signatures.
A key signature tells you to maintain those sharps or flats throughout the music, unless there's a
natural symbol to override it. The key signatures on the poster are just a few examples. First I will
tell you about the one with sharps on it. There is the G Major in this major there is only one sharp
the F. Next there is the D Major the sharps are the F and C. Finally the last key signature with
sharps is the A Major. It has the F, C, and G sharps. Next is the key signature with flats on it.
There is the F Major in this major there is only one flat the B. Next there is the Bb Major the flats
are the B and E.

Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
