Essay On Honor Code
Constantly, high schools, such as Lopez High School, have reported severe percentages of cheating, misbehavior, and dishonesty. For this reason,
Lopez High School, among other schools, should establish and maintain an honor code within them. Providing an honor code will help reduce the
percentage of cheating with the classrooms. Along with, constantly reminding the students' of their ''moral values and responsibility'' to perform with
honesty (Vangelli). Also by enforcing the honor codes at Lopez High Schools, the students' integrity to live and work in an honest and safe
environment will significantly increase. Punishments for failure to ensue the honor code should be enhanced frequently to reduce the percentage of
misbehavior within the school. Furthermore, if schools follow and create an honor code it will improve the school's reputation by gaining respect of
other schools and its peers. Cheating has always been a controversial issue at a variety of high schools and colleges, including Lopez High School.
"Requirements for students to write a pledge of honor" every time they submit an assignment to their designated teacher should be enforced (Vangelli).
This would result in the student conscious being more subjective to "behave honestly" and be "responsibly at all times" (Vangelli). If Lopez High

I disagree with my opponents because, as research has shown, schools with honor codes result in a decrease of student misbehavior and attempting
cheating. Therefore, my opponents should not only side with me, but provide schools all over the world with honor codes to enhance the learning
abilities of their students. Plus, giving the students honor codes will not result in the "end of the world and life" of the

Schools from every level, Elementary, Middle, High, and college have their own honor codes. They each mold their rules and consequences based on
the students' behaviors. Once the faculty begins to realize that their students cheat on their test, they enforce harsher consequences to avoid further
cheating. Afterwards faculties assemble and become aware that the majority of the students cheat, they establish an Honor Board and an honor code
and make their students sign honorary documents promising to not cheat. Implementing an honor code is the best way for students to understand the
consequences of cheating, but some of the ways they have tried to decrease the amount of cheating needs polishing; also, the environment a student

are?) a concern in my school and several others, and that is why there is a plethora of ways school board have tried to stop cheating. In Source B,
Alyssa Vangelli expected that by signing pledges students were reminded "of their moral values and a responsibility to perform honestly in the
school environment." Some universities take the pledge to an extreme and make their students sign and recite the pledge constantly. However,
people get bored of listening to the same song over and over, so students will lose interest when orating or signing a pledge every time they must
take a test or turn in a paper. This lead to students not caring about how special the pledge is and cheat just like the students in Source D, they were
required to sign a pledge and recite the pledge before starting on their exams, but more than 100 students cheated in just one class. In the contrary,
Source F describes that cheating increases if schools do not engage students in an "active dialogue on the issue of academic dishonesty." Therefore, if
students are not aware they are doing something illegal, such as plagiarism and they do not know the consequences, they will cheat more to obtain a
higher grade to increase the average in their class. In addition, my school utilized the method of signing pledges at the beginning of the school year so
that students are aware of the expectations; in every class teachers went over the honor code and the consequences of cheating and at the end of the day
students signed pledges, but students continued their cheating habits. Thus, the honor board must find a balance of the number of times students are
supposed to hear and sign pledges so that the pledge and the honor code are more

Honor Code Pros And Cons
Over the past few years the honor code has begun to slowly fade away as more students decide that cheating is the best way to get through school.
Many students in college still hold strongly to the honor code, but to others the honor code is dead. Many people believe that you should be able to
choose what you do through college if that's cheating your way till the end or is it doing everything the right way and pushing yourself to be the best.
Honor, by definition, explains one with high regards or when great respect is given or received; but in my opinion, honor is one who shows
incredible character, shows honest qualities, and has the highest moral beliefs. Those who stick with this code of honor will be respected by other and
hold the highest respect for themselves People believe that the honor code is indeed outdated and believe that an honor code should be up to the student
and what he or she expects from themselves. A poll taken in 2007 tells us that '60.8% of 30,000 respondents most of them within its core demographic
confessed to cheating on their assignments and tests' (OEDb). Not only do honor codes hinder teamwork outside of the classroom, but they also fail to
stop actual cheating inside the classroom. Honor–code schools typically require professors to leave the room during exams, and they...show more

Getting into the right school, and succeeding in such a way that one can then proceed to the next place in life, makes the college experience for
many people more a matter of getting ahead and gaining the proper diploma. If resources beyond oneself are needed then all are easily acquired by
a few word changes and changed sentences also, strokes of the keyboard in the privacy of one's room, and all gained with no obvious sense of injury
to anyone else. If nothing appears to be wrong and everyone is happy then there is nothing wrong with what you have done

Why Do Schools Use Honor Codes?
Many schools have implemented different ways of using honor codes or systems in and out of the classroom wall. The schools use a set of referred to
rules or requirements to make the students rethink on the very idea of whether they would want to cheat, steal, or plagiarize knowing that there will be
consequences should they be caught in the act.
These types of schools, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, or even college schools, have different ways of conveying their use of 'honor
codes'. For example, many students have 'cheated' or copied before. Therefore, when the school invests on cameras to look after students all around the
school, it is statistically shown that the number of learning individuals currently working to accomplish these in despicable acts is less in percentage.
Compared to before, when there weren't many eyes on them (Bacall). Additionally, it's informative information to be told to the teachers, that the
cheating that happens in their own classroom without them even noticing, has but disappeared, now that there are hidden cameras inside the
classrooms watching out for the students, are not so inclined to cheat anymore and thus makes cheating not as common...show more content...
impression[s]" made about them and cause a positive chain reaction for themselves to be led on as they are inspiring to amount to something great for
the future (Dirmeyer and Cartwright). Thus, these practicing students of ours are then able to acquire a better way of life, and this honor code
continues to investigate further in the future on whom our students become. As a result, this systematic code of honor has changed the way tests and
quizzes are taken, the way our students write, and the way they overall finish their education. These codes have effectively created a new way that our
students and other individuals may go about in the world after they finish and could either break or make them into a good role model of a citizen for

Honor Code Argument Essay
Honor codes have been a strong subject of dispute over the last few years. Whether to hold students accountable for their own actions, and allow them
to control the cheating in a school is, in all regards, a major decision that could potentially be detrimental to a school's society and reputation.
However, the rewards for a successful honor code are exponentially higher than the cost. Schools should always have some form of honor code in
place, whether it be something like a signed contract at the beginning of each semester paired with an honor court to hold violators accountable, or
something as simple as a statement of trust on a worksheet. There will always be students who cheat, no matter the environment. Source C collects a
statistic from Harvard University, stating that "125 students 'improperly collaborated'" on a certain exam they took. In an elite environment such as
Harvard, one would hardly believe that so many students were caught cheating on an exam. Dirmeyer and Cartwright explain that there are...show more

A study done in Source E shows that there are only eight percent of students that would turn in a fellow student for cheating. If that sort of dishonesty
becomes rampant in a school, the honor codes can no longer be upheld properly. The honesty of students is key to the success of honor codes. If a
student is dishonest about the misbehavior of another student, then the honor code goes to waste, because now the cheating has not been taken care of
by the justice of the honor system. There is no foreseeable remedy for such behavior, and there will always be a "bad apple to ruin the bunch."
In conclusion, the honor code system is one that is valuable in an environment in which it can thrive, (i.e. the presence of "honest" types, corporal
punishment, etc.) and would benefit the school society in general, making students more honest and less susceptible to cheating and fraudulent

Honor Code Synthesis Essay
Colleges and universities must rely heavily on individual student integrity to create a successful educational environment. To eliminate clandestine
practices such as cheating and collusion, scholastic institutions have adopted honor codes as a way of ensuring honesty. Evidence from the provided
sources demonstrates the effectiveness of honor codes. My school, which currently lacks an honor code system, should establish one for the benefit of
the student body. Honor codes allow for involvement from students by giving them the opportunity to dictate the moral standards to which every
student should be held up. In Source B, Vangelli traces the establishment of a honor code at her school, Lawrence Academy, following its development
through the student–run Senate. Senate and class debates, she notes, led to amendments such as the removal of punishment if a student failed to report
cheating and a required pledge of honor...show more content...
In Source F, McCabe and Pavela report of "an ongoing dialogue that takes place among students on campuses with strong honor code traditions, and
occasionally between students and relevant faculty and administrators, which seeks to define where, from a student perspective, 'trivial' cheating
becomes serious." Since students can determine more definitively what is right, what is wrong, and what is in the middle, unfair practices occur less
frequently. McCabe and Pavela "see significantly less self–reported cheating on campuses with honor codes compared to those without such codes."
The pair of researchers have also confirmed that dialogue and encouraged student involvement are more likely to occur in schools where an honor
code is in place. The conclusive and well–defined nature in honor codes allows for meaningful talks on school legislation and supports student
involvement in these

Essay about The honor code
How will the honor code impact my academic and campus life?
Throughout my years at Xavier and beyond I intend to follow the Xavier Honor Code so I can become a cooperative and responsible person. By
being a student at Xavier I notice I will have to take responsibility of my actions and faults. In order for Xavier to trust me and to allow me to
continue attending their school, I will have to follow their rules and be respectful. Not only should I do these things, but also I have to respect myself in
order to respect others. In following the Honor Code at Xavier I will learn more about others, the school, and myself. The Honor Code will impact my
academic and campus life because it will lead my way to the...show more content...
By being honorable I will have to be truthful, honest, and, respectful throughout any situation. This means I will have to be straightforward dealing
with my academics, personal life at Xavier, and campus life. I will have to take responsibility of my actions and choices. My actions at Xavier will
determine whom I will become and what I am going to do with my life.
Trust at Xavier is a very important issue. In order for Xavier to trust me I have to have trust in others and myself. Xavier has to trust me from the day
I enter their school until the day of graduate. Honesty is the key to trust for it will set me free from cheating, lying ,
Ganier 2 and being immoral. Also, I have to choose whom I become friends with because if I don't trust them I will get into bad situations. I should
have a close relationship with Xavier and myself so I can become trustful.
Xavier's Honor System will give me an opportunity to endure in many experiences. Even if the experiences are good or bad it will give me a chance
to learn from my mistakes. By experiencing things I can learn more about myself. In college I have the freedom to do anything I want, but I shouldn't
take it lightly. The honor code will teach me not to have too much freedom and how to manage my time.
Life at Xavier is going to be fun, but I have to be mature. Maturity is also a goal I must reach while attending Xavier. I have to be mature about things
in order to be treated as a young adult.

Honor Code
Honors systems are sets of rules that encourage a student's integrity to be motivated to overpower any other bad quality. An honors code is a great
way to improve academic integrity in all high school students, however it should be revised to also support the students themselves. Honor codes are
great and should be implanted into every high school, but should revise the ideas of punishment and should re–educate students on honor codes. Honor
codes should not only be sets of rules they should be contain encouragements to students. Honor codes have specific penalties to students who break
the rule. One such rule stated by Vangeli is that it is astudent's responsibility to report on classmates if cheating and "failure to confront a student...show

The honor code is taught or is supposed to be taught to every single student. However, Sledge and Pringle took a survey and found out that only 42%
of students do not know the range of sanctions. This number is almost laughable because it is basically half the student body who do not know the
codes. Sledge and Pringles also discover that 48% of students believe the codes to be unfair. Most of these students most likely are just not as informed
of the student code rules. Educating students most likely are just not as informed of the student code rules. Educating students on the honors code is an
important job and should have been taught to students from the beginning. However, only 65% of students report ever being taught the honors code
(Sledge and Pringle). This number is very low considering how every student should have been taught the codes. Re–education on the honor codes
would benefit many students especially since the honors code is a good thing. Honor codes are good and have good intentions. they are well made
for the most part but should be revised to support students. The honor codes should be revised not as a set of rules but a set of rewards. These rewards
should be created to encourage students to do the right thing and form a positive academic mindset into all students. The punishments and re–education
of the honor code should be revised and looked over for a positive boost on

The Importance Of Honor Code
Honor Code
Do you believe that it is important to have an honor code in your school? An academic honor code or honor system is a set of rules or ethical principles
governing an academic community based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. I believe that Fairmont
Heights High School should not have a honor code, because the administration will not enforce the policy, the students will not obey it, and it will be a
distraction to schools..
I strongly believe that we should not have a honor code, because the administration will not enforce the policy. At the beginning of every year students
are given the student handbook, this handbook is given to create a structure for how to students should...show more content...
Having a honor code takes a lot of responsibility, and that responsibility has to be added onto the administration, which can barely handle what they
already are responsible for. Also. the students won't follow the honor code. They believe that violating the honor code, to make sure their grade is ok
is a reasonable action. Furthermore, instead of creating an honor code, schools should cater to the needs of the students so that cheating won't be a
problem. If cheating is not a problem, then there is no need for an honor

Honor Code In High School
A more enforced and a slightly stricter honor code can help in creating a fairer competitive environment for the school's peers who are constantly
competing to be in the top ten percent of their respective grade level. Not only will this new structure of code improve the unjust environment but as
well improve the trust relationship between students and their teachers. This will be done by the teachers letting the students know of the trust they
have with them in not making any deceitful acts in their assignments, but as well inform them of the consequences, if they choose to cheat their way
through. The closer the student feels to the teacher, the least likely they will feel the need to cheat on their assignments and not disappoint them.

High School Honor Code Essay
Imagine having to sign every piece of work that you are the creator of just to verify that you truly are its creator; it's a true insult to your integrity as a
scholar. Even more ridiculous is the idea of doing that on activities in school that are not open–ended. Though ridiculous, this is the reality for many
high school students in the U.S.
I, personally, had not encountered a school honor code until high school. In elementary school, I hadn't thought to copy and I believe that it was
implicit that it was discouraged. By middle school, my peers and I had started copying each other's work with no consequence even though we
were explicitly told not to. Now being in high school, I confess that my friends and I copy each other more frequently than ever on almost a day to
day basis. Alliances have arisen; a clan outside my own has reportedly assigned different classwork to do for each member to complete and share.
Quite frankly, I've never heard of a more collaborative culture. Oddly enough, our honor code is more strict, in theory, than we've ever experienced.

In my school of cheaters and collaborators, students do in fact "live in complete trust in each other" (Source B) to not report each other and to
provide. If the goal of an honor code was to create a close knit community, I'd argue that the rebellion against it has therefore sufficiently done so. I've
noticed that hand in hand with cheating, is the desire to help others keep up. Students expected to report each other (Source B) would only break the
bonds between us thus changing our community for the worse, academic "integrity" aside. Thus, an honor code in which students are expected to
report each other is a wedge in the communal quality of the educational

Honor codes have been a big topic among schools for quite sometime. They have been proven to be effective. Many would disagree in saying they
bring about a tattle tale mentality in students. If established correctly honor codes are a great benefit to students and schools. First honor codes are
proven to help stop cheating and plagiarism. But it is the student's responsibility to stop that person from cheating. In source B many students said they
did not want it to be their responsibility. If a school has an honor code but most students are uncomfortable turning in fellow students it defeats the
purpose of having the honor code. Once the honor code is well established with good sensible rules students might think the honor code is beneficial.

Why Is Honor Code Important
Honor Code
How is it determined if something is working the way it is intended to? Based on observations, studies and results it can be determined how useful
something actually is, and based in this same things we can determine that the honor code is not of great use. Honor code systems should not be
maintained because it is the student's' choice to cheat, there is lack of obedience in young people and it is not useful because it does not change anything.
First of all, a cheater does not change his ways, because if they want to cheat they will find a way and do it even if they signed a honor code. As source
D debated that "even here [University of Virginia], where honor is so well defined and policed by an elite student committee, plagiarism has become a
problem." Even in an university with an elevated system of honor code, the students still cheated because they choose to, completely ignoring the honor
code. Also, the source C indicated "if a student enters a college with mostly "cheater" types [will encourage] even "honest" types to cheat." This is a
clear example of the decision took by any type of student to cheat, regardless of a honor code.
Following that, the lack of obedience young people tend to have makes the honor code difficult to implement. The source B exposed that "The earlier

Are Honor Codes at a University Level Effective in Maintaining Academic Integrity?
Issue Question
The issue I am interested in exploring is whether or not honor codes at a university level are effective in maintaining the integrity and academic honesty
of their students. The issue is of interest to university administrators, faculty, and other employees, as well as students and education_______. While
some argue that honor codes enforced by university administrators are the best or only way to enforce discipline in academic honesty, many argue that
there are other solutions to this problem such as workshops, student governed programs, or peer–enforced honor codes. Today, the argument between
the two groups continues to thrive and grow while a number of studies and experiments are being carried out.
Methods
I initially began my search for sources by using the website Lili.org. This site contained different scholarly articles that pertained to the subject I was
studying and led me to further investigation. Through this website, I was led to EBSCO and Academic Search Premiere,...show more content...

Calversia Hughes Siegle English 7 28 November 2017 Should My School Establish an Honor Code or System? Why is it so hard make your own
statement without plagiarizing? Many schools have considered the method of Honor Codes, a sworn contract or pledge of honor that gives students
the opportunity to cultivate integrity. First proposed in the spring of 1998, it was a way to promote "an environment where students and faculty could
live in complete trust of one another" (Vangelli) and "improve the academic integrity of the college" (Dirmeyer/Cartwright). As a student at Dysart
High School, I believe that an honor code should be brought here and many other schools. In today's age, the possibility of plagiarism dishonesty is at
an all–time high.

Adopting Honor Codes
Honor codes in an academic setting can have varied effects, but when executed successfully, they can help to eliminate practices that are dishonest and
cultivate trust and integrity among students and teachers. Windham High School should adopt an honor code in order to promote an environment of
trust and integrity. Adopting an honor code can be a difficult process and relies greatly on the integrity of the student and their values on cheating. For
example, Source C delineates a "feedback loop" on how an honor code can either create a "culture of dishonesty" or one of trust and integrity. At the
core of this feedback loop are the students and whether there are more "cheaters" or honest students. While there are undoubtedly numerous "cheaters"

SC State should establish an honor code to help enforce rules that will prevent students from cheating and plagiarism in the college community. This is
because it will promote a healthy academic environment, and lower the academic dishonesty in school.
Although, some may not think an honor code can be useful in a college environment, but it can be seen in Dirmeyer, Jennifer, and Alexander
Cartwright article which states, "students at colleges with honor codes–typically students enforced cheat less than their counterparts elsewhere do

Honor Code: What Is Honesty?
There has been an "honor code" put in place for a while now (Source C), but they don't really work out because of one thing, Honesty. Honesty is a
trait that is very important to look for in people and is required to have a working honor code. Honesty is something that will last way throughout high
school and college. This characterizes your credibility and decency. Pretty early on we are taught general manners and ethics like, not to lie, cheat or
steal the outcome of not following the rules would inevitably lead to consequences. But like all other people the temptation of not doing what we are
told can lead us to do the things that we were taught not to do. So basically we have had and learned a basic honor code since we were children

Honor Code Research Paper
An honor code is a statement addressing issues such as cheating, stealing, and misrepresentation, made by a school or an institution in which its
participants pledge to adhere to. Honor codes are self–governing because under an honor code, students are required to turn in other students in
violation of the code, intending to cultivate integrity among people. Some people may look at these honor codes as restrictions to their freedom.
Others may see it as ways of protecting people from straying onto a negative path in their lives. It is because of this discipline that people succeed and
make their name in the world. I think my school should have honor codes because it would help create a safe environment, helps people keep their
originality, and ensures a bright future ahead for the student....show more content...
However, what they do not realize is that these honors codes help maintain some core moral values and integrity of the students. When a student is
taking an exam, they should be able to focus on their paper without having the worry of whether or not the person next to them is going to be copying
their paper. The last thing a student wants while taking an exam is the assumption that they are next to a cheater and might end up getting caught.
Creating a safe environment can go a long way. When there is a "cheating free" zone and most of the students follow that practice, the kids who
normally feel an impulse to cheat might find it harder to cheat. If most of the students cannot tolerate cheating, then those students most likely will not
hesitate in turning in a cheater. However, if most of the kids in a college do cheat, then nobody would be likely to turn in another cheater (Source C).
Creating an environment where cheating is a disgrace and socially unacceptable would make a person embarrassed to be labeled as a cheater (Source

Essay On Honor Code

  • 1. Essay On Honor Code Constantly, high schools, such as Lopez High School, have reported severe percentages of cheating, misbehavior, and dishonesty. For this reason, Lopez High School, among other schools, should establish and maintain an honor code within them. Providing an honor code will help reduce the percentage of cheating with the classrooms. Along with, constantly reminding the students' of their ''moral values and responsibility'' to perform with honesty (Vangelli). Also by enforcing the honor codes at Lopez High Schools, the students' integrity to live and work in an honest and safe environment will significantly increase. Punishments for failure to ensue the honor code should be enhanced frequently to reduce the percentage of misbehavior within the school. Furthermore, if schools follow and create an honor code it will improve the school's reputation by gaining respect of other schools and its peers. If Lopez High School follows and enforces these...show more content... I disagree with my opponents because, as research has shown, schools with honor codes result in a decrease of student misbehavior and attempting cheating. Therefore, my opponents should not only side with me, but provide schools all over the world with honor codes to enhance the learning abilities of their students. Plus, giving the students honor codes will not result in the "end of the world and life" of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Honor Code Research Paper Schools from every level, Elementary, Middle, High, and college have their own honor codes. They each mold their rules and consequences based on the students' behaviors. Once the faculty begins to realize that their students cheat on their test, they enforce harsher consequences to avoid further cheating. Afterwards faculties assemble and become aware that the majority of the students cheat, they establish an Honor Board and an honor code and make their students sign honorary documents promising to not cheat. Implementing an honor code is the best way for students to understand the consequences of cheating, but some of the ways they have tried to decrease the amount of cheating needs polishing; also, the environment a student surrounds himself...show more content... are?) a concern in my school and several others, and that is why there is a plethora of ways school board have tried to stop cheating. In Source B, Alyssa Vangelli expected that by signing pledges students were reminded "of their moral values and a responsibility to perform honestly in the school environment." Some universities take the pledge to an extreme and make their students sign and recite the pledge constantly. However, people get bored of listening to the same song over and over, so students will lose interest when orating or signing a pledge every time they must take a test or turn in a paper. This lead to students not caring about how special the pledge is and cheat just like the students in Source D, they were required to sign a pledge and recite the pledge before starting on their exams, but more than 100 students cheated in just one class. In the contrary, Source F describes that cheating increases if schools do not engage students in an "active dialogue on the issue of academic dishonesty." Therefore, if students are not aware they are doing something illegal, such as plagiarism and they do not know the consequences, they will cheat more to obtain a higher grade to increase the average in their class. In addition, my school utilized the method of signing pledges at the beginning of the school year so that students are aware of the expectations; in every class teachers went over the honor code and the consequences of cheating and at the end of the day students signed pledges, but students continued their cheating habits. Thus, the honor board must find a balance of the number of times students are supposed to hear and sign pledges so that the pledge and the honor code are more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Honor Code Pros And Cons Over the past few years the honor code has begun to slowly fade away as more students decide that cheating is the best way to get through school. Many students in college still hold strongly to the honor code, but to others the honor code is dead. Many people believe that you should be able to choose what you do through college if that's cheating your way till the end or is it doing everything the right way and pushing yourself to be the best. Honor, by definition, explains one with high regards or when great respect is given or received; but in my opinion, honor is one who shows incredible character, shows honest qualities, and has the highest moral beliefs. Those who stick with this code of honor will be respected by other and hold the highest respect for themselves People believe that the honor code is indeed outdated and believe that an honor code should be up to the student and what he or she expects from themselves. A poll taken in 2007 tells us that '60.8% of 30,000 respondents most of them within its core demographic confessed to cheating on their assignments and tests' (OEDb). Not only do honor codes hinder teamwork outside of the classroom, but they also fail to stop actual cheating inside the classroom. Honor–code schools typically require professors to leave the room during exams, and they...show more content... Getting into the right school, and succeeding in such a way that one can then proceed to the next place in life, makes the college experience for many people more a matter of getting ahead and gaining the proper diploma. If resources beyond oneself are needed then all are easily acquired by a few word changes and changed sentences also, strokes of the keyboard in the privacy of one's room, and all gained with no obvious sense of injury to anyone else. • 4. Why Do Schools Use Honor Codes? Many schools have implemented different ways of using honor codes or systems in and out of the classroom wall. The schools use a set of referred to rules or requirements to make the students rethink on the very idea of whether they would want to cheat, steal, or plagiarize knowing that there will be consequences should they be caught in the act. These types of schools, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, or even college schools, have different ways of conveying their use of 'honor codes'. For example, many students have 'cheated' or copied before. Therefore, when the school invests on cameras to look after students all around the school, it is statistically shown that the number of learning individuals currently working to accomplish these in despicable acts is less in percentage. Compared to before, when there weren't many eyes on them (Bacall). Additionally, it's informative information to be told to the teachers, that the cheating that happens in their own classroom without them even noticing, has but disappeared, now that there are hidden cameras inside the classrooms watching out for the students, are not so inclined to cheat anymore and thus makes cheating not as common...show more content... impression[s]" made about them and cause a positive chain reaction for themselves to be led on as they are inspiring to amount to something great for the future (Dirmeyer and Cartwright). Thus, these practicing students of ours are then able to acquire a better way of life, and this honor code continues to investigate further in the future on whom our students become. As a result, this systematic code of honor has changed the way tests and quizzes are taken, the way our students write, and the way they overall finish their education. These codes have effectively created a new way that our students and other individuals may go about in the world after they finish and could either break or make them into a good role model of a citizen for the rest of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Honor Code Argument Essay Honor codes have been a strong subject of dispute over the last few years. Whether to hold students accountable for their own actions, and allow them to control the cheating in a school is, in all regards, a major decision that could potentially be detrimental to a school's society and reputation. However, the rewards for a successful honor code are exponentially higher than the cost. Schools should always have some form of honor code in place, whether it be something like a signed contract at the beginning of each semester paired with an honor court to hold violators accountable, or something as simple as a statement of trust on a worksheet. There will always be students who cheat, no matter the environment. Source C collects a statistic from Harvard University, stating that "125 students 'improperly collaborated'" on a certain exam they took. In an elite environment such as Harvard, one would hardly believe that so many students were caught cheating on an exam. Dirmeyer and Cartwright explain that there are...show more content... A study done in Source E shows that there are only eight percent of students that would turn in a fellow student for cheating. If that sort of dishonesty becomes rampant in a school, the honor codes can no longer be upheld properly. The honesty of students is key to the success of honor codes. If a student is dishonest about the misbehavior of another student, then the honor code goes to waste, because now the cheating has not been taken care of by the justice of the honor system. There is no foreseeable remedy for such behavior, and there will always be a "bad apple to ruin the bunch." In conclusion, the honor code system is one that is valuable in an environment in which it can thrive, (i.e. the presence of "honest" types, corporal punishment, etc.) and would benefit the school society in general, making students more honest and less susceptible to cheating and fraudulent Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Honor Code Synthesis Essay Colleges and universities must rely heavily on individual student integrity to create a successful educational environment. To eliminate clandestine practices such as cheating and collusion, scholastic institutions have adopted honor codes as a way of ensuring honesty. Evidence from the provided sources demonstrates the effectiveness of honor codes. My school, which currently lacks an honor code system, should establish one for the benefit of the student body. Honor codes allow for involvement from students by giving them the opportunity to dictate the moral standards to which every student should be held up. In Source B, Vangelli traces the establishment of a honor code at her school, Lawrence Academy, following its development through the student–run Senate. Senate and class debates, she notes, led to amendments such as the removal of punishment if a student failed to report cheating and a required pledge of honor...show more content... In Source F, McCabe and Pavela report of "an ongoing dialogue that takes place among students on campuses with strong honor code traditions, and occasionally between students and relevant faculty and administrators, which seeks to define where, from a student perspective, 'trivial' cheating becomes serious." Since students can determine more definitively what is right, what is wrong, and what is in the middle, unfair practices occur less frequently. McCabe and Pavela "see significantly less self–reported cheating on campuses with honor codes compared to those without such codes." The pair of researchers have also confirmed that dialogue and encouraged student involvement are more likely to occur in schools where an honor code is in place. The conclusive and well–defined nature in honor codes allows for meaningful talks on school legislation and supports student involvement in these Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay about The honor code How will the honor code impact my academic and campus life? Throughout my years at Xavier and beyond I intend to follow the Xavier Honor Code so I can become a cooperative and responsible person. By being a student at Xavier I notice I will have to take responsibility of my actions and faults. In order for Xavier to trust me and to allow me to continue attending their school, I will have to follow their rules and be respectful. Not only should I do these things, but also I have to respect myself in order to respect others. In following the Honor Code at Xavier I will learn more about others, the school, and myself. The Honor Code will impact my academic and campus life because it will lead my way to the...show more content... By being honorable I will have to be truthful, honest, and, respectful throughout any situation. This means I will have to be straightforward dealing with my academics, personal life at Xavier, and campus life. I will have to take responsibility of my actions and choices. My actions at Xavier will determine whom I will become and what I am going to do with my life. Trust at Xavier is a very important issue. In order for Xavier to trust me I have to have trust in others and myself. Xavier has to trust me from the day I enter their school until the day of graduate. Honesty is the key to trust for it will set me free from cheating, lying , Ganier 2 and being immoral. Also, I have to choose whom I become friends with because if I don't trust them I will get into bad situations. I should have a close relationship with Xavier and myself so I can become trustful. Xavier's Honor System will give me an opportunity to endure in many experiences. Even if the experiences are good or bad it will give me a chance to learn from my mistakes. By experiencing things I can learn more about myself. In college I have the freedom to do anything I want, but I shouldn't take it lightly. The honor code will teach me not to have too much freedom and how to manage my time. Life at Xavier is going to be fun, but I have to be mature. Maturity is also a goal I must reach while attending Xavier. I have to be mature about things in order to be treated as a young adult. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Honor Code Honors systems are sets of rules that encourage a student's integrity to be motivated to overpower any other bad quality. An honors code is a great way to improve academic integrity in all high school students, however it should be revised to also support the students themselves. Honor codes are great and should be implanted into every high school, but should revise the ideas of punishment and should re–educate students on honor codes. Honor codes should not only be sets of rules they should be contain encouragements to students. Honor codes have specific penalties to students who break the rule. One such rule stated by Vangeli is that it is astudent's responsibility to report on classmates if cheating and "failure to confront a student...show more content... The honor code is taught or is supposed to be taught to every single student. However, Sledge and Pringle took a survey and found out that only 42% of students do not know the range of sanctions. This number is almost laughable because it is basically half the student body who do not know the codes. Sledge and Pringles also discover that 48% of students believe the codes to be unfair. Most of these students most likely are just not as informed of the student code rules. Educating students most likely are just not as informed of the student code rules. Educating students on the honors code is an important job and should have been taught to students from the beginning. However, only 65% of students report ever being taught the honors code (Sledge and Pringle). This number is very low considering how every student should have been taught the codes. Re–education on the honor codes would benefit many students especially since the honors code is a good thing. Honor codes are good and have good intentions. they are well made for the most part but should be revised to support students. The honor codes should be revised not as a set of rules but a set of rewards. These rewards should be created to encourage students to do the right thing and form a positive academic mindset into all students. The punishments and re–education of the honor code should be revised and looked over for a positive boost on Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. The Importance Of Honor Code Honor Code Do you believe that it is important to have an honor code in your school? An academic honor code or honor system is a set of rules or ethical principles governing an academic community based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. I believe that Fairmont Heights High School should not have a honor code, because the administration will not enforce the policy, the students will not obey it, and it will be a distraction to schools.. I strongly believe that we should not have a honor code, because the administration will not enforce the policy. At the beginning of every year students are given the student handbook, this handbook is given to create a structure for how to students should...show more content... Having a honor code takes a lot of responsibility, and that responsibility has to be added onto the administration, which can barely handle what they already are responsible for. Also. the students won't follow the honor code. They believe that violating the honor code, to make sure their grade is ok is a reasonable action. Furthermore, instead of creating an honor code, schools should cater to the needs of the students so that cheating won't be a problem. If cheating is not a problem, then there is no need for an honor Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Honor Code In High School A more enforced and a slightly stricter honor code can help in creating a fairer competitive environment for the school's peers who are constantly competing to be in the top ten percent of their respective grade level. Not only will this new structure of code improve the unjust environment but as well improve the trust relationship between students and their teachers. This will be done by the teachers letting the students know of the trust they have with them in not making any deceitful acts in their assignments, but as well inform them of the consequences, if they choose to cheat their way through. The closer the student feels to the teacher, the least likely they will feel the need to cheat on their assignments and not disappoint them. Hopefully Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. High School Honor Code Essay Imagine having to sign every piece of work that you are the creator of just to verify that you truly are its creator; it's a true insult to your integrity as a scholar. Even more ridiculous is the idea of doing that on activities in school that are not open–ended. Though ridiculous, this is the reality for many high school students in the U.S. I, personally, had not encountered a school honor code until high school. In elementary school, I hadn't thought to copy and I believe that it was implicit that it was discouraged. By middle school, my peers and I had started copying each other's work with no consequence even though we were explicitly told not to. Now being in high school, I confess that my friends and I copy each other more frequently than ever on almost a day to day basis. Alliances have arisen; a clan outside my own has reportedly assigned different classwork to do for each member to complete and share. Quite frankly, I've never heard of a more collaborative culture. Oddly enough, our honor code is more strict, in theory, than we've ever experienced. ...show more content... In my school of cheaters and collaborators, students do in fact "live in complete trust in each other" (Source B) to not report each other and to provide. If the goal of an honor code was to create a close knit community, I'd argue that the rebellion against it has therefore sufficiently done so. I've noticed that hand in hand with cheating, is the desire to help others keep up. Students expected to report each other (Source B) would only break the bonds between us thus changing our community for the worse, academic "integrity" aside. Thus, an honor code in which students are expected to report each other is a wedge in the communal quality of the educational Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Honor Code Research Paper Honor codes have been a big topic among schools for quite sometime. They have been proven to be effective. Many would disagree in saying they bring about a tattle tale mentality in students. If established correctly honor codes are a great benefit to students and schools. First honor codes are proven to help stop cheating and plagiarism. But it is the student's responsibility to stop that person from cheating. In source B many students said they did not want it to be their responsibility. If a school has an honor code but most students are uncomfortable turning in fellow students it defeats the purpose of having the honor code. Once the honor code is well established with good sensible rules students might think the honor code is beneficial. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Why Is Honor Code Important Honor Code How is it determined if something is working the way it is intended to? Based on observations, studies and results it can be determined how useful something actually is, and based in this same things we can determine that the honor code is not of great use. Honor code systems should not be maintained because it is the student's' choice to cheat, there is lack of obedience in young people and it is not useful because it does not change anything. First of all, a cheater does not change his ways, because if they want to cheat they will find a way and do it even if they signed a honor code. As source D debated that "even here [University of Virginia], where honor is so well defined and policed by an elite student committee, plagiarism has become a problem." Even in an university with an elevated system of honor code, the students still cheated because they choose to, completely ignoring the honor code. Also, the source C indicated "if a student enters a college with mostly "cheater" types [will encourage] even "honest" types to cheat." This is a clear example of the decision took by any type of student to cheat, regardless of a honor code. Following that, the lack of obedience young people tend to have makes the honor code difficult to implement. The source B exposed that "The earlier drafts of the...show more content... • 14. Honor Code Essay Are Honor Codes at a University Level Effective in Maintaining Academic Integrity? Issue Question The issue I am interested in exploring is whether or not honor codes at a university level are effective in maintaining the integrity and academic honesty of their students. The issue is of interest to university administrators, faculty, and other employees, as well as students and education_______. While some argue that honor codes enforced by university administrators are the best or only way to enforce discipline in academic honesty, many argue that there are other solutions to this problem such as workshops, student governed programs, or peer–enforced honor codes. Today, the argument between the two groups continues to thrive and grow while a number of studies and experiments are being carried out. Methods I initially began my search for sources by using the website Lili.org. This site contained different scholarly articles that pertained to the subject I was studying and led me to further investigation. Through this website, I was led to EBSCO and Academic Search Premiere,...show more content... "Assessing Honor Code Effectiveness: Results of a Multipronged Approach from a Five Year Study." • 15. Honor Code Research Paper Calversia Hughes Siegle English 7 28 November 2017 Should My School Establish an Honor Code or System? Why is it so hard make your own statement without plagiarizing? Many schools have considered the method of Honor Codes, a sworn contract or pledge of honor that gives students the opportunity to cultivate integrity. First proposed in the spring of 1998, it was a way to promote "an environment where students and faculty could live in complete trust of one another" (Vangelli) and "improve the academic integrity of the college" (Dirmeyer/Cartwright). As a student at Dysart High School, I believe that an honor code should be brought here and many other schools. In today's age, the possibility of plagiarism dishonesty is at an all–time high. • 16. Adopting Honor Codes Honor codes in an academic setting can have varied effects, but when executed successfully, they can help to eliminate practices that are dishonest and cultivate trust and integrity among students and teachers. Windham High School should adopt an honor code in order to promote an environment of trust and integrity. Adopting an honor code can be a difficult process and relies greatly on the integrity of the student and their values on cheating. For example, Source C delineates a "feedback loop" on how an honor code can either create a "culture of dishonesty" or one of trust and integrity. At the core of this feedback loop are the students and whether there are more "cheaters" or honest students. While there are undoubtedly numerous "cheaters" Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Honor Code Research Paper SC State should establish an honor code to help enforce rules that will prevent students from cheating and plagiarism in the college community. This is because it will promote a healthy academic environment, and lower the academic dishonesty in school. Although, some may not think an honor code can be useful in a college environment, but it can be seen in Dirmeyer, Jennifer, and Alexander Cartwright article which states, "students at colleges with honor codes–typically students enforced cheat less than their counterparts elsewhere do (Cartwrights). Which comes to an understanding that a more healthy academic environment will take place in a college community, if a college does enforce an honor code. This honor code will typically stand Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Honor Code: What Is Honesty? There has been an "honor code" put in place for a while now (Source C), but they don't really work out because of one thing, Honesty. Honesty is a trait that is very important to look for in people and is required to have a working honor code. Honesty is something that will last way throughout high school and college. This characterizes your credibility and decency. Pretty early on we are taught general manners and ethics like, not to lie, cheat or steal the outcome of not following the rules would inevitably lead to consequences. But like all other people the temptation of not doing what we are told can lead us to do the things that we were taught not to do. So basically we have had and learned a basic honor code since we were children Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Honor Code Research Paper An honor code is a statement addressing issues such as cheating, stealing, and misrepresentation, made by a school or an institution in which its participants pledge to adhere to. Honor codes are self–governing because under an honor code, students are required to turn in other students in violation of the code, intending to cultivate integrity among people. Some people may look at these honor codes as restrictions to their freedom. Others may see it as ways of protecting people from straying onto a negative path in their lives. It is because of this discipline that people succeed and make their name in the world. I think my school should have honor codes because it would help create a safe environment, helps people keep their originality, and ensures a bright future ahead for the student....show more content... However, what they do not realize is that these honors codes help maintain some core moral values and integrity of the students. When a student is taking an exam, they should be able to focus on their paper without having the worry of whether or not the person next to them is going to be copying their paper. The last thing a student wants while taking an exam is the assumption that they are next to a cheater and might end up getting caught. Creating a safe environment can go a long way. When there is a "cheating free" zone and most of the students follow that practice, the kids who normally feel an impulse to cheat might find it harder to cheat. If most of the students cannot tolerate cheating, then those students most likely will not hesitate in turning in a cheater. However, if most of the kids in a college do cheat, then nobody would be likely to turn in another cheater (Source C). Creating an environment where cheating is a disgrace and socially unacceptable would make a person embarrassed to be labeled as a cheater (Source Get more content on HelpWriting.net
