Dyslexia is a term regularly bandied about the educational community and is a word that is likely to have been heard by most of the general public.
For all its popularity, dyslexia is a term that is shrouded in confusion and ambiguity. This confusion was experienced first hand during SE1 and has
been observed as something trainee teachers and teachers alike encounter regularly (PLL, 5/11/11], Appendix 1, pg2). On that basis the rationale behind
this assignment is to further understand the term 'dyslexia', to consider the definition and diagnosis, as well as the barriers to learning it can generate.

Screening can only suggest that there is a high probability of dyslexia. This however may change as recent research suggests that there is a genetic
marker that can be identified in children with dyslexia (Fisher et al 2002). Currently however, a workable programme has yet to materialise. Screening
currently considers a wide range of abilities, such as word recognition, writing style and speed, organisational skills and memory.
For dyslexia to be recognised as a Special Educational Need and the requisite educational support given, an 'official' assessment by a dyslexia
specialist or educational psychologist is required. These assessments are mainly completed following a referral to the Local Authority usually by a
SENCO or parent. This assessment results in a report which outlines not only the child's difficulties and ways to improve, but also the strengths the
child has. It is argued that identifying the strengths of the child is vital to developing a plan to assist a child with their weaknesses. Peer (2006)
amongst others is keen to dispel the myth that dyslexia is linked to intelligence; in fact the contrary can be said. Often dyslexic learners have very well
developed interpersonal, creative and oral skills, if these skills can be harnessed as a means of developing weaker areas it is argued progress will be

To better understand some of the problems that dyslexic people face in learning to read and write, one needs to look at the four basic steps in the
learning process. The four steps include: input, integration, memory, and output. Input– This involves what information goes into a person from the
five senses. These sensory organs send the information to the brain. Integration– The brain sorts through all the information, puts it in the right order,
organizes it, and gets meaning from the message. Memory– The brain stores the information so it can be used when needed. Memory plays a very
important part in what students have to learn in school. The memory and cognition for the dyslexic person can be outstanding. They have excellent
long–term memory for things such as movies, experiences, locations and faces. Output– This is where we use the information to answer questions.

written language.
The cause of dyslexia is not completely known. One of the most widely recognized theories is that dyslexia is a genetically based neurological
problem. It has also been argued that dyslexia could be caused during early fetal development. Some researchers have suggested that problems with
dyslexia may be caused by defects in the inner ear that cause problems with word and sound decoding. Researchers continue to look for the cause of

A person with dyslexia can have many reading problems. Letters are often reversed for them so a q might look like a p and vice versa. Words can be
read backwards and letters can be all jumbled up, they would see the word pot, but would read it as top. Words such as off may look like of or on.
Dyslexics that might read aloud would probably stumble over words or say them completely wrong; if someone were reading aloud to them, it would

emotionally and psychologically. Speaking personally by using the pronoun "I" as was the convention, I wrote from personal experience. With a

However, there is no correlation between intelligence and dyslexia. In fact, very intelligent people are dyslexic. For example, Einstein, arguably the
one of the most intelligent people ever, was known to be dyslexic. People with dyslexia can go on to higher education and become professionals.
Often, these people succeed in areas that do not require a significant number of language based tasks on a daily basis (4).
Sometimes, children can learn to work around their disability without special help. In fact, some of these people do not learn of their diagnosis until
adolescence or adulthood when they suddenly start having problems keeping up with school or work. It is a disorder that can go undetected until
adulthood when the person's child is diagnosed. However, it is not something that can "go–away" when discovered and treated. It cannot be cured but
those with the disorder can learn to overcome it with special training and educational provisions such as untimed testing or spoken exams.
As noted above, some people find out about their disability by learning about their child's learning problems. Dyslexia is a genetic disorder. Recently
scientists located a gene on the short arm of chromosome #6 for dyslexia. Because the gene is dominant the disorder is highly heritable (1).
