The Impact of Culture on Education
Nowadays the opportunity to get a valuable education is an important issue in people's life studies. However, whether you are disabled, normal or having a limited language, everyone should get the opportunity in having a valuable education. In addition, we all know that without education, a person will not get the chance to live a proper life that will suit him in living a good life and finding a better future job to support his needs. Therefore, people with disabilities should live a normal life as a normal person and that is usually depends on their culture. Therefore, the way a culture behaves and responds to people with disabilities can have a huge impact on their ability to gain a valuable education. I will discuss the differences between the ways American society and Kuwaiti society responded to disabilities such as deafness, limited language, and blindness.
The more Kuwaiti and American culture shows respect and appreciation, the more people with hearing impaired feel comfortable and earn an education easily. Since I was studying in Kuwait high school, I had never seen disabilities such as hearing impaired student. Somehow, later I figured that Kuwaiti culture offers a special deafness high school and it is a private school where all students with disability studies together. I was wondering why they were having their own school and could not get the opportunity to study with us as any normal student in public high school. In addition, the way Kuwaiti culture offers a private school for the hearing impaired student is actually not a good idea, which I completely disagree with. From my own perspective, this because it will let normal people feel that they are different than the hearing impaired students and that is the way I felt from the beginning, until I meet my friend Talya who lives in the United State. She was a senior who soon graduate from high school, she was talking about her deaf friend who was studying with her, and how they were in a good relationship. Actually, I was shocked the way Talya talked about her friend who was hearing impaired maybe because in my home country I have never gotten the chance to meet people with disabilities such as Talya's friend. Moreover, Talya has changed my mind about disabled people and suddenly let me reconsider their situation. Moreover, I like the way of United States culture and how people in society deal with hearing impaired people in a respectful and a behavioral way. In addition, I think that the American society has given the chance for disabled people to feel comfortable to study with others as normal people, which will not let them feel different and can help both normal and disabled people in education for example, they can exchange ideas and opinions about their life studies which could help improve both sides education.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

1. Can you remember the time when you were a child, parents read stories in the
bed? When I was young, everyday my mom read different and interesting stories from
all over the world for me and my sister. One day, she read fascinating story and I still
remember beautiful buildings and people in that book that were totally different. Those
were very marvelous things for young child who had never seen different colored or
white people and culture. Since that time, I was curious about other cultures and always
wanted to go other countries and experience different culture. At last when I was 14
years old, I could visit Australia alone for two month. During that time, I had learned a
lot of things without my parents help which I could not expect. So I believe learning a
foreign culture is a satisfactory experience.
Making friends regardless of region, gender, age and color helps to realize that the
world is wider. I still keep in touch with my friend, Suma who lived in Bangladesh. When
I went Bangladesh to do volunteer service with my Korean friends, we met together. I
stayed her house for 2 days and it was really special memory for me. Once she told
about her religion: Islam and I could learn lots of things about Islam which I did not
know about. And also she made their traditional cook to us. I could learn more about
Bangladesh not by reading books or information but by making great friends. Every
time, I try to discuss and try to know others culture not only minor issue but very
profound topic with Suma and other foreign friends who I met through the Internet. By
sharing thoughts, I could realize wider world naturally not like a big fish in a small pond.
Moreover, I can perceive the difference between our culture and other's.
By learning their culture, it can be possible to understand different living style,
history and etiquette. When I went to Turkey to do missionary works, I could stay
Turkish people for 3 days. I found the different things between Korea's cultures. They
made all things what they need by themselves. And Turkish people were so religious
that when the sing is heard from a temple they prayed to Allah five times everyday.
Also Turkish women must wear chador which is a large piece of cloth that covers a
woman’s head and upper body. So that only women’s face can be seen. At first, it was
so awkward to me to wear, but it was special memory and experience. In Turkey, there
are Kurds. They are an Ethnic-Iranian ethno linguistic group mostly inhabiting a region
known as Kurdistan, which includes adjacent parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. I
became to know about Kurds specifically and understand how they want to have own
their nation. Not only history and culture but also I could learn other people's etiquette.
When I was in Bangladesh, I was so shocked because of their culture. They do not use
2. spoon when they eat. Using their right hand, they can eat their meal. At first, I could not
even try to eat something with my hand but fortunately, I just used to do it and enjoyed
my meal. Those were all the amazing experience and that I even try in my country.
Another advantage of learning foreign culture is to feel proud of owns country.
Going to other countries and introducing about Korea give a chance to
recognize the superiority of my country. The Samsung Group is the world's largest
conglomerate by revenue, headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul, South Korea. It is
South Korea's largest company which includes Samsung Electronics, the world's largest
electronics company, Samsung Heavy Industries, the world's second largest shipbuilder.
The LG Group is also South Korea's third largest conglomerate that produces
electronics, chemicals, and telecommunications products and operates subsidiaries like
LG Electronics, LG Telecom and LG Chem in over 80 countries. I see lots of people
having a 'Samsung' or 'LG' cell phone. Every time I try to explain that those phones are
made in Korea, but nobody understands. It is hard for me to explain in a different
language but I did because of the pride that I feel for the products we made in my
country. That also makes me to imbue a mind with new patriotism.
