Project “Paying It Forward” is an envi-
ronmental community service project
that engages architectural students
in solving community issues with their
knowledge in architectural design
as part of their academic studies.
By encouraging the students to put
their knowledge into application, this
project serves to instill a range of skills
in the students while benefitting the
community.
The main objectives of this project
“Paying It Forward” is to allow us to
have a better understanding to-
wards the principles of sustainability
design in environmental and social
perspective. This project raises the
awareness towards current environ-
mental issues and the importance of
an environmental sustainable design
for the community.

Bandar Sunway is considered as a
metropolitan town given its constant
development since a long time ago.
Within this metropolis, in PJS 7, there
lies several flats that seems slightly out
of place. Under the management of
the Joint Management Body (JMB),
Sunway Low Cost Flat has a total of
420 units. JMB works very closely with
the developers, Majlis Perbandaran
Subang Saja (MPSJ), and Adun YB
Hannah Yeoh. Their responsiblility is
mainly to keep the place clean and
appropriate as possible as a living
space. Majority of the households liv-
ing in these flats are in poor financial
condition and having difficulties just
to make ends meet. The lacking of
facilities become least of their wor-
ries as they have more important pri-
orities. Meanwhile, JMB is incapable
to sustain all the maintainance of
these facilities due to various factors.

LOCATION
Every human has different needs
at different stage of life. Accord-
ing humanist psychologist Abraham
Maslow, human needs are cate-
goriszed in a hierachy and people
are motivated to fulfill basic needs
before moving on to other, more ad-
vanced needs.
The poor living condition of majori-
ty of the Sunway Low Cost Flat resi-
dents places them between the lev-
el of Physiological Needs and Safety
Needs. However, there are a group
of people that has an exceptional
need - the need to play. Playing is
critical for becoming socially adept,
coping with stress and building cog-
nitive skills. The children in the area
has little chance to possess a toy
and thus, the playground become
their only playing facilities. Our aim
in this project is to provide these chil-
dren with a better and safer playing
environment by improving the exit-
ing playground.

ANALYSIS
Rubber can be detrimental towards
the environment. The main conse-
quence is its highly polluted effluents.
The rapid growth of this industry gen-
erates large quantities of effluents
from its processing operations. Its
wastewater contains high biological
oxygen demand and ammonia con-
tent.
Various countermeasures have been
develop. They are generalized into

RUBBERThe waste management of the un-
wanted tyres are one of the most
diffcult. Improper management will
cause the tyre to deteriorate and
produce harmful substances as it
contain high concentration of am-
monia and nitrogen compounds.
Tyres are reused as one of our build-
ing material as it is made of rubber.
Rubber is long-lasting and it provies
safety towards children with its elas-
tic properties. Its threat towards the
natural environment is also minimal.
The tyress used in this project are
carefully selected and cleaned be-
forehand. The tyres are also keep
away from direct exposure of sunlight
as the sunlight will accelarate the de-
composition of rubber and the relese
of harmful substance.
By reusing the used tyre, the tyres’ life
span is extended and less waste is
created
NYLON
The graph above shows the percent-
age of recovery after 96 hours of
stretching under high tension. Nylon
rope has a result of 83%. Thsi prove
that nylon has better resiliency and
higher tensile strength compared to
other material. It can elongates with-
out breaking.
Nylon also has high resistance to-
wards insects, fungi, animals, as well
as molds, mildew, rot and many
chemicals. This is make it suitable for
outdoor purposes.
Its excellent abrasion resistance will
ensure its long life span and resisi-
tance in harsh environment.
All of nylon’s characteristic suggest
that nylon is highly durable and long
lasting. Nylon does not decompose
and emit substance that will harm the
environment. It is a highly stable and
safe material to use in a playground.
PVC, as a raw material, is energy ef-
ficient to process. PVC pipe manu-
facturing is extremely efficient, with
virtually 100 percent of the PVC com-
pound being used. It takes four times
less energy to make than concrete
pipe, and half that used for iron pipe.
PVC pipe’s ecological credentials
have been demonstrated by nu-
merous life-cycle assessments, which
scientifically assess the impact of a
product, from raw material extraction
to end-of-life.
PVC pipe’s ultra-smooth surface re-
duces pumping costs and its leak-
free joints eliminate water loss – which
can be up to 40 percent in some
old-technology and corrosion-prone
piping networks.
PVC pipe’s greatest environmental
attribute is perhaps its exceptional
durability and corrosion resistance
– leading to better water conserva-
tion and lower replacement, mainte-
nance and repair costs. Its light weight
eases installation.
the amount of carbon dioxide released
during decomposition
the rate of corrosion
PVCPVC pipe is chosen as the material
to make the goal post because of its
characteristics:
• strong and rigid
• resistant to a variety of acids and
bases
• maximum usable temperature
140oF (60oC)
The pipe is used to make the frame-
work of the goalpost because it can
withstand the strong force by soccer
and does not break easily.
PAINT
The graph above show the embodied
energy used in the manufacturing of
the products made from petroleum.
As the graph illustrated, althought
paint is also a pertroleum-based
product, it used relatively low energy
to manufacture.
There are many types of paint. The
paint used in this project is acrylic
paint. Acrylic paint is a fast-drying
paint containing pigment suspension
in acrylic polymer emulsion. It is ex-
tremely versatile, fast-drying paints, It
is water soluble but water-resistant af-
ter dried. Acrylic paint is sustainable
because it is generally non-remov-
able from a solid surface once ap-
plied. Water or mild solvents do not
re-solubilize it.
Solvents in traditional paintsoften
contain high quantities of VOCs, a
substance that harms human health.
VOCs are released into the atmo-
sphere during the drying process.
The fast-drying acrylics paint con-
tain only a minimal amount of VOCs.
However, the fast drying character-
istic of the paint allows no VOCs to
escape into the atmosphere.
ISSUES &
SOLUTION
HAMMOCK
Two hammocks are tied to the trees in the playground to provide a space for
relaxation purposes. Hammock is chosen as the one of the project outcomes
because it requires less maintenance and weather resistant. The hammocks
are weaved in a continuing series of alternating square knots with 14 pieces
of nylon thread. The knots create a cool pattern of overlapping circle which
contributes to the aesthetic value of the hammocks beside its stability and
good tensile strength.
The two hammocks are weaved in different sizes to accommodate children
with different build. The hammocks are tied at the optimal height so that inju-
ries can be minimized in the case of the hammocks breaking. The hammocks
are also tied over a clear patch of land to eliminate the risk of injury. With the
average weight of the children in mind, the hammocks are designed to with-
hold up to 3 times the average weight.
Lack of relaxation space
ISSUE
SOLUTION
BENCH
The number of existing benches at the playground is lacking and thus, we de-
cided to add more benches. The benches are made up of recycled rubber
tyres. Rubber tyres are chosen as the materials due to their weather resistance
characteristic and low maintenance need.
The primary objective of the benches is to provide a resting place for the chil-
dren after playing. The random arrangement and varying height of the tyres
provide the children an interesting space to interact with each other and the
space. The tyres are fully filled with soil to fix the position of the tyres and pre-
vent water from acculumating in the tyres, which is the ideal breeding ground
of Aedes mosquitos.
Lack of benches
ISSUE
SOLUTION
GOALPOST
The futsal court in the playground is lacking in its facilities, especially the goal-
post. the children always use a designated goalpost. In respond, a more prop-
er goalpost build using PVC pipes and nylon rope. Both PVC pipe and nylon
rope can sustain strong striking force from the soccer. This charateristic is the
main reason that cause them to be the goalpost’s material.
Incomplete futsal coart
ISSUE
SOLUTION
MURAL
PAINTING
The mural painting serves as a decoration to the playground and attraction to
the children. The theme of the mural painting is traditional games in Malaysia.
It is used to remind the children nowadays about the traditional games that
have been forgotten in the younger generation. The mural paintings depict
children playing traditional games with bright expressions to encourage the
children to follow suit. The painted traditional games are games that can be
played in the playground.
Old damaged walls
ISSUE
SOLUTION
FENCING
The futsal court is always occupied with parking vehichles. It inhibits the chil-
dren from playing in the court and greatly demotivates the children. The fence
is set up around the futsal court that is located adjacent to the driveway.
Although the fence is a chain-link fences, it serves our purpose nonetheless. It
is easy to install and economical. Chain-link fence is installed by setting posts
into the concrete footing. This could help prevent leaning under the tension of
a stretched fence. Besides, the fence is set up to a maximum height to ensure
the ball is played within the court area. As the futsal court is located beside
the driveway, the fence is built for the safety of the children. Subsequently, the
risk of injuries is reduced.
Occupied futsal court
ISSUE
SOLUTION
The initial purpose of the signage is to
warn the public to not damage the
goalpost in the futsal coart and pre-
vent people from parking their vehi-
cles in the court. It is render unneces-
sary after we got the sponsorship for
installation of the fence.
The dustbin serves to keep the plac-
es cleaner and to educate the chil-
dren on preserving the playground.
However, it require constant man-
agement and there are no organiza-
tion officially responsible for the daily
cleaning of disposal of the rubbish in
the dustbin. It may negative effect
and thus, the plan is dropped.

In the process of getting approval
from the local authorities to execute
our project, we had the oppoturnity
to speak with the YB Hannah Yeoh.
More commonly known to the pub-
lic, YB Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan is
the current Speaker and a member
of the Selangor State Assembly from
the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
She has generously offered a helping
hand for our project by funding the
installation of fences.
The fences were installed by a few
construction workers as it requires
some skills. The fencing surround the
three side of the futsal court in the
playground. The fences inhibit ve-
hicles from occupying the children
playing area and protect the facili-
ties within.

AIt fter doing some precedent stud-

our plans. We search for several
needy communities and discuss as a
group
before the slection. One particular
communities caught our attention
as it is a need that we can relate. The
children in PJS 7. Due to their fami-

thing they play is the facilities of the
playground nearby their house.
As we start to work on it, we be-
come more enthusiastic. It was no
longer just an assignment, it startedd
to mean something more for us and
for the children. The children helped
us with our work as they too are ea-
ger for the outcome just as much.
More often than not, the design are
changed according to the children
opinions. There were unexpected re-
sult but it all works well. Although the
final looks a bit shabby, the children
appreciated it. The innocent soul of

The graph aboveshows the percent- age of recovery after 96 hours of stretching under high tension. Nylon rope has a result of 83%. Thsi prove that nylon has better resiliency and higher tensile strength compared to other material. It can elongates with- out breaking. Nylon also has high resistance to- wards insects, fungi, animals, as well as molds, mildew, rot and many chemicals. This is make it suitable for outdoor purposes. Its excellent abrasion resistance will ensure its long life span and resisi- tance in harsh environment. All of nylon’s characteristic suggest that nylon is highly durable and long lasting. Nylon does not decompose and emit substance that will harm the environment. It is a highly stable and safe material to use in a playground.

PVC, as araw material, is energy ef- ficient to process. PVC pipe manu- facturing is extremely efficient, with virtually 100 percent of the PVC com- pound being used. It takes four times less energy to make than concrete pipe, and half that used for iron pipe. PVC pipe’s ecological credentials have been demonstrated by nu- merous life-cycle assessments, which scientifically assess the impact of a product, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. PVC pipe’s ultra-smooth surface re- duces pumping costs and its leak- free joints eliminate water loss – which can be up to 40 percent in some old-technology and corrosion-prone piping networks. PVC pipe’s greatest environmental attribute is perhaps its exceptional durability and corrosion resistance – leading to better water conserva- tion and lower replacement, mainte- nance and repair costs. Its light weight eases installation. the amount of carbon dioxide released during decomposition the rate of corrosion

PVCPVC pipe ischosen as the material to make the goal post because of its characteristics: • strong and rigid • resistant to a variety of acids and bases • maximum usable temperature 140oF (60oC) The pipe is used to make the frame- work of the goalpost because it can withstand the strong force by soccer and does not break easily.

The graph aboveshow the embodied energy used in the manufacturing of the products made from petroleum. As the graph illustrated, althought paint is also a pertroleum-based product, it used relatively low energy to manufacture. There are many types of paint. The paint used in this project is acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic polymer emulsion. It is ex- tremely versatile, fast-drying paints, It is water soluble but water-resistant af- ter dried. Acrylic paint is sustainable because it is generally non-remov- able from a solid surface once ap- plied. Water or mild solvents do not re-solubilize it. Solvents in traditional paintsoften contain high quantities of VOCs, a substance that harms human health. VOCs are released into the atmo- sphere during the drying process. The fast-drying acrylics paint con- tain only a minimal amount of VOCs. However, the fast drying character- istic of the paint allows no VOCs to escape into the atmosphere.

HAMMOCK Two hammocks aretied to the trees in the playground to provide a space for relaxation purposes. Hammock is chosen as the one of the project outcomes because it requires less maintenance and weather resistant. The hammocks are weaved in a continuing series of alternating square knots with 14 pieces of nylon thread. The knots create a cool pattern of overlapping circle which contributes to the aesthetic value of the hammocks beside its stability and good tensile strength. The two hammocks are weaved in different sizes to accommodate children with different build. The hammocks are tied at the optimal height so that inju- ries can be minimized in the case of the hammocks breaking. The hammocks are also tied over a clear patch of land to eliminate the risk of injury. With the average weight of the children in mind, the hammocks are designed to with- hold up to 3 times the average weight. Lack of relaxation space ISSUE SOLUTION

BENCH The number ofexisting benches at the playground is lacking and thus, we de- cided to add more benches. The benches are made up of recycled rubber tyres. Rubber tyres are chosen as the materials due to their weather resistance characteristic and low maintenance need. The primary objective of the benches is to provide a resting place for the chil- dren after playing. The random arrangement and varying height of the tyres provide the children an interesting space to interact with each other and the space. The tyres are fully filled with soil to fix the position of the tyres and pre- vent water from acculumating in the tyres, which is the ideal breeding ground of Aedes mosquitos. GOALPOST The futsal courtin the playground is lacking in its facilities, especially the goal- post. the children always use a designated goalpost. In respond, a more prop- er goalpost build using PVC pipes and nylon rope. Both PVC pipe and nylon rope can sustain strong striking force from the soccer. This charateristic is the main reason that cause them to be the goalpost’s material. Incomplete futsal coart ISSUE SOLUTION

MURAL PAINTING The mural paintingserves as a decoration to the playground and attraction to the children. The theme of the mural painting is traditional games in Malaysia. It is used to remind the children nowadays about the traditional games that have been forgotten in the younger generation. The mural paintings depict children playing traditional games with bright expressions to encourage the children to follow suit. The painted traditional games are games that can be played in the playground. Old damaged walls ISSUE SOLUTION

FENCING The futsal courtis always occupied with parking vehichles. It inhibits the chil- dren from playing in the court and greatly demotivates the children. The fence is set up around the futsal court that is located adjacent to the driveway. Although the fence is a chain-link fences, it serves our purpose nonetheless. It is easy to install and economical. Chain-link fence is installed by setting posts into the concrete footing. This could help prevent leaning under the tension of a stretched fence. Besides, the fence is set up to a maximum height to ensure the ball is played within the court area. As the futsal court is located beside the driveway, the fence is built for the safety of the children. Subsequently, the risk of injuries is reduced. Occupied futsal court ISSUE SOLUTION

The initial purposeof the signage is to warn the public to not damage the goalpost in the futsal coart and pre- vent people from parking their vehi- cles in the court. It is render unneces- sary after we got the sponsorship for installation of the fence. The dustbin serves to keep the plac- es cleaner and to educate the chil- dren on preserving the playground. However, it require constant man- agement and there are no organiza- tion officially responsible for the daily cleaning of disposal of the rubbish in the dustbin. It may negative effect and thus, the plan is dropped. SIGNAGE DUSTBIN

In the processof getting approval from the local authorities to execute our project, we had the oppoturnity to speak with the YB Hannah Yeoh. More commonly known to the pub- lic, YB Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan is the current Speaker and a member of the Selangor State Assembly from the Democratic Action Party (DAP). She has generously offered a helping hand for our project by funding the installation of fences. The fences were installed by a few construction workers as it requires some skills. The fencing surround the three side of the futsal court in the playground. The fences inhibit ve- hicles from occupying the children playing area and protect the facili- ties within. SPONSORS

REFLECTIONIt all startedwith just a brief. Some- where in all our ten minds echoed ‘Project “Paying It Forward” is just another assignment to submit’. AIt fter doing some precedent stud- ies and research, we proceed with our plans. We search for several needy communities and discuss as a group before the slection. One particular communities caught our attention as it is a need that we can relate. The children in PJS 7. Due to their fami- ly’s poor financial condition, the only thing they play is the facilities of the playground nearby their house. As we start to work on it, we be- come more enthusiastic. It was no longer just an assignment, it startedd to mean something more for us and for the children. The children helped us with our work as they too are ea- ger for the outcome just as much. More often than not, the design are changed according to the children opinions. There were unexpected re- sult but it all works well. Although the final looks a bit shabby, the children appreciated it. The innocent soul of the childern deeply moved us. Meet- ing the assignment criteria became secondary. It all started with just smile. Some- where in all our ten minds echoed “I want to see that smiel again. It makes me happy”. “It looks like a small taman now, usu- ally there are only a few children playing but now there’re more and more coming and we are very hap- py to see that happening.” - Ms Mary, Secretary of joint Man- agement Body (JMB) - “One of the boys give this colourful bracelet. It is so adorable.” - Ong Huey Fen, student - “I feel like I am like one of them now. I want to keep playing with them but Ker Neng keep ask me to help them.” - Lee Yaue Shen, student - “I just gave one the boys my watch. I don’t even know why I did that. I just did it and I think I will still do it if given another chance” - Tan Shing Yeou, student - “Best” - Peh Ker Neng, student - “Pink fluffy unicorn dancing on rain- bow” --Phua Jing Sern, student -
