UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, meets its European Members during th...UICcom
UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, has held the UIC European Management Committee today in Riga, Latvia, at the kind invitation of Edvīns Bērziņš, Chairman of the Board of Latvian Railways (LDZ). The meeting was chaired by regional president Francisco Cardoso dos Reis (IP, Portugal).
Also present were CEOs and senior representatives of ADIF, DB, FSI, Infrabel, LDZ, MAV, PKP, RENFE, SNCF, RZD, ProRail, SJ, CER and colleagues from the UIC HQ team.
The document proposes developing an EU eFreight Roadmap to improve efficiency in European freight transport. Currently 43% of truckloads, 50% of trains, and 30-40% of ships are empty. The Roadmap would provide a context for integrating all transport modes using information technology. It would establish a standard framework for information exchange across modes, a single EU transport document, a single window for administrative procedures, simple border crossing procedures, and secure transport corridors by 2020. Success requires acceptance from businesses, transport managers, and regulators, with acceptable costs and data security. Governance would involve an EU committee and advisory group.
UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, has a new Director of the Rail System Department. UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, has welcomed a new Director to its technical “Rail System” department. Christian Chavanel succeeds Dr Marc Antoni, recognised for his wide range of expertise and who led this department for five years.
Transportation provides many benefits. It allows people to access jobs, education, healthcare and more opportunities. An efficient transportation system is important for economic growth by connecting communities and enabling the movement of goods and services. Reliable transportation options help improve quality of life overall.
UC creates accurate 3D rail concepts and visualizations using minimal data to support funding, design development, quality assurance, and stakeholder buy-in for proposed and funded rail projects. UC technologies allow for efficient human experience and analysis of rail environments, connections, and operations through virtual simulations. Features include full animated trains of any length, pedestrianized stations, in-train and platform accessibility analysis, and driver or passenger viewpoints to evaluate sightlines, signals, and experiences.

Peter Jenkins - 10 steps to great station designimadhammoud
The document outlines 10 steps for great station design including clarity of wayfinding and information, intelligent use of light, security and management, sustainability strategies, deliverability and future-proofing, site responsive design, the civic role of a rail gateway, multi-disciplinary design, operational context and regulations, and design quality. It provides examples of stations that exemplify each step, such as Manchester Piccadilly for wayfinding clarity and Manchester Victoria for intelligent light use.
The document discusses antitrust guidelines for a meeting between rail industry competitors on the X2Rail-2 and other Shift2Rail projects. It notes that while some collaboration is legal and beneficial, agreements between competitors that restrict competition are prohibited. It provides guidance on avoiding inappropriate topics of discussion like prices, production levels, customer relationships, costs and other sensitive business information. Participants are advised to adhere strictly to the published agenda and not use meetings to reach agreements that impair independent business judgment or competition.
The document discusses principles of facility layout and material handling. It describes various types of material handling equipment like cranes, conveyors, chutes, trucks, rails, and pipelines. It then explains different facility layout types - product layout, process layout, combined layout, fixed layout, and cellular layout. Specific examples shown include a manufacturing layout with different workstations, a hospital department layout, and a cellular manufacturing layout.

The document discusses a conference about logistics, ports, trains and the completion of the internal market in the European Union. Specifically, it will address the Mediterranean Rail Freight Corridor which aims to improve competitiveness through better port and airport connections, create a major rail freight axis, and achieve more sustainable development. Completing the internal market requires removing obstacles like Spain's different rail gauge standard. The potential opportunities of the Mediterranean rail freight corridor are significant. At the conference, MEP Ramon Tremosa will present his new book on logistics and the potential of Mediterranean ports.
This document provides an overview of the need for secure truck parking across Europe. It discusses the large volume of freight transported across Europe on the Trans-European Road Network and the prevalence of freight crime, which impacts all EU countries. Certain regions experience higher levels of freight theft and are identified as crime hotspots. There is a high demand for secure truck parking facilities where drivers can rest safely and cargo is protected, as many existing facilities do not provide adequate security. The development of secure parking standards and facilities is important to address this issue.

The document summarizes the key points of the 2011 EU White Paper on Transport. It establishes 10 goals to guide the development of a competitive and low-carbon European transport system by 2050, including reducing conventionally-fueled urban transport by 2030, 40% reduction in aviation/shipping emissions by 2050, and shifting 50% of medium-distance freight to rail/waterborne transport. It outlines initiatives to achieve these goals such as deploying new fuels/vehicles, completing the trans-European transport network, and applying "user pays" pricing principles.

CER is an organization that represents 78 rail operators and infrastructure managers from across Europe. Dr. Libor Lochman, the Executive Director of CER, gave a presentation on the future of rail development in Southeast Europe. He argued that high quality rail corridors must be prioritized and form an alternative network. Investment in rail infrastructure will trigger increased demand for rail transport. However, rail needs a level playing field with road transport regarding access to infrastructure, taxation, and internalization of external costs. The key elements for sustainable rail development are high quality infrastructure, an intermodal level playing field, and enabling intramodal competition.
1. The document discusses the TEN-T Guidelines and Connecting Europe Facility as they relate to seaports and transportation networks.
2. It calls for more transparent criteria for integrating ports into transportation networks and obligatory rail and inland waterway connections proportional to traffic needs.
3. Other recommendations include clearer specifications of maritime infrastructure, recognizing port community systems, and adapting corridor implementation to changing market needs.
This document outlines the activities of ERTICO-ITS Europe, a public-private partnership that aims to bring intelligence to mobility through intelligent transportation systems (ITS). It discusses what ITS is, who ERTICO's partners are, what activities it undertakes, what it has achieved, and its vision for the future. ERTICO's over 100 partners include industry, infrastructure operators, public authorities, research institutes, and users. Its activities include co-funded projects, deployment platforms, policy work, and international cooperation to promote interoperable ITS services across Europe from research to deployment.
