ways. One way is by changing the rate at which the molecules rotate. The theory of
quantum mechanics describes the behavior of matter on a microscopic scale – that is,
the size of molecules and smaller. According to this theory, molecules can rotate only
at certain discrete frequencies as if vibrations of a piano string in that they tend to be
at specific “ringing” frequencies. (The rotation frequency is the number of revolutions
that a molecule completes per second.) The molecule can absorb incident wave
(energy), if this incident wave has just the right frequency.
This frequency of the radiation that can be absorbed or emitted depends on the
molecule’s structure. The H2O molecule is constructed in such a manner that it
absorbs infrared radiation of wavelengths of about 12 micrometers and longer. This
interaction gives rise to a very strong absorption feature in Earth’s atmosphere called
the H2O rotation band. As shown in the previous slide, virtually 100 % of infrared
radiation longer than 12 micrometers is absorbed with a combination of CO2 and H2O.
(By the way, the H2O rotation band extends all the way into the microwave region of
the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e. above a wavelength of 1000 micrometer, which is
why a microwave oven is able to heat up anything that contains water.)

GJ 1132 b is a nearby Earth-sized exoplanet transiting an M dwarf, and is amongst the most highly
characterizable small exoplanets currently known. In this paper we study the interaction of a magma
ocean with a water-rich atmosphere on GJ 1132b and determine that it must have begun with more
than 5 wt% initial water in order to still retain a water-based atmosphere. We also determine the
amount of O2
that can build up in the atmosphere as a result of hydrogen dissociation and loss.
We find that the magma ocean absorbs at most ∼ 10% of the O2 produced, whereas more than
90% is lost to space through hydrodynamic drag. The most common outcome for GJ 1132 b from our
simulations is a tenuous atmosphere dominated by O2
, although for very large initial water abundances
atmospheres with several thousands of bars of O2
are possible. A substantial steam envelope would
indicate either the existence of an earlier H2
envelope or low XUV flux over the system’s lifetime. A
steam atmosphere would also imply the continued existence of a magma ocean on GJ 1132 b. Further
modeling is needed to study the evolution of CO2
or N2
-rich atmospheres on GJ 1132 b.
Isotopic evidence of long-lived volcanism on Io
Jupiter’s moon Io hosts extensive volcanism, driven by tidal heating. The isotopic composition of Io's inventory of volatile chemical elements, including sulfur and chlorine, reflects its outgassing and mass loss history, and thus records information about its evolution. We used millimeter observations of Io’s atmosphere to measure sulfur isotopes in gaseous SO2 and SO, and chlorine isotopes in gaseous NaCl and KCl. We find 34S/32S = 0.0595 ± 0.0038 (equivalent to δ34S = +347 ± 86‰), which is highly enriched compared to average Solar System values and indicates that Io has lost 94 to 99% of its available sulfur. Our measurement of 37Cl/35Cl = 0.403 ± 0.028 (δ37Cl = +263 ± 88‰) shows that chlorine is similarly enriched. These results indicate that Io has been volcanically active for most (or all) of its history, with potentially higher outgassing and mass-loss rates at earlier times.

The Second World war greatly weakened European colonial rule, forcing the allies to abandon many of their colonial possessions in the face of invasion.
When the European powers tried to return to rule again they found that the local nationalists had encouraged the population to reject European rule in favor of self-determination. A good example of this was Indonesia where the Dutch had ruled for over 150 years. In 1948, Indonesia declared Independence, and Netherlands found themselves without any support.
Another reason was that when the war ended, one of the themes of the United Nations was encouraging self-determination and ending colonial rule, which was one of the main causes of the First World War.
But i think that the most important factor is that the world, particularly the United States, refused to help or support European powers re-establish colonial rule. One of the reasons for this was that the U.S saw European colonial rule as deterimental towards its own global economic aspirations.
A good example of this was the U.S attitude towards Britain, which had used the Imperial system to exclude the U.S from favourable trade with Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
The U.S was also reluctant to use money and manpower to fight guerilla wars to support European rule. The U.S was more than aware that the world would also reject any war fought to uphold colonial rule. When the nationalists in Vietnam tried to overthrow French rule, the French had no allies and lacked general support.
Another reason was that with the spread of communism in Europe and SE Asia, the U.S was more than aware that European colonial rule provided fertile ground for anti-European sentiment, which invited communist sympathies.
