New individuals, new creative groups, and new collaborative networks get organized to “reconquer” public spaces – spatially, physically and politically. They can be temporary or permanent, physical or immaterial, spontaneous or organized. A factor of importance is that they are initiated by non-institutional actors who are trying to invent, experiment, stimulate processes, programmes, uses, and social interactions within public spaces.

We want to talk and discuss about our nightly urban environment, about the way we create and perceive the nocturnal image of our cities, about the lighting of our streets. The availability of new technologies for lighting does not seem to be altering significantly the methodology applied for this purpose, our concepts about, for example, “quality” of lighting, ergonomy, eficiency, safety… All of these terms should be strongly revised, in our opinion, and the need to renew the obsolete intalations due to energy eficiency requirements is a good opportunity to do so.
We choose experimentation as a tool to develop our proposals, focused in the lighting design of public places, of spaces where there is a chance for social interchange, between people and between people and their environment, their lightscape. We want to arrange conditions for things to happen, for changes to come in this perception/communication of/with space.
We believe in education as a form of producing and distributing culture for a social change, a form of activism and community building. During one of our workshops, many topics appear that we like to apply in practice: DIY, autonomy, the nightscape of our urban environment as part of a visual indentity and heritage, the special care that historic sites, public places and old city centres require in terms of a lighting project… and there is always a concept that flows through everything we do and debate: enablement of citizenship, as a way to favour the commitment of the community in the evolution and planning of their landscape, their habitat. And to develop a personal criteria towards the policies of urban planning, in general.
Non Riservato promotes innovation in public places, through its members and the community: organizations, cooperatives, professionals and companies, that make jobs out of creativity, a transformative urban and social tool.
The network brings together those who share its philosophy and aims, who want to experience new organizational and production models, but also who have a common desire to take back their public spaces, through creativity and participatory processes.
The development of Non Riservato is made possible thanks to the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo and the partnership with the City of Milan. The project collaborates with the University of Milano Bicocca (Department of Sociology and Social Research) and Politecnico of Milano (Department of Architecture and Urban Studies).
What does NR do?
Non Riservato creates projects that connect all the different capacities of its members: public art, urban games, urban sports, performance, street art, architecture and design. The projects have the common features of all taking part in public spaces; they start processes of re-appropriation, creative involvement of participants and develop socialization and facilitate meetings.
Non Riservato acts as an incubator, mostly through bidding of development and prototyping for new projects.
Non Riservato also involves external partners to carry out strategic projects. Non Riservato follows its strategic lines, by working on a commission basis with the public and the private entities, that need services or projects with a highly creative and social impact.

“COM.MUNIA.MO” enables the informal economies, that emerge from the local communities. The platform takes form in a social media environment that allows and facilitates the exchange of services, (such as small domestic chores, baby-sitting, support for the elderly, but also small utilitarian objects or meals) among the members of the community. There are two modalities of retribution. First by activating a time bank exchange, and second by using real currency.

2.
3. Issues:
- public place used as parking lot
- low community involvement and segregated users (polimi,
leonardo school, residents)
How to address them:
- 1. by using urban planning strategies
- 2. by engaging the neibourhood community
4. Objectives:1. Create a shared communication and design language between
academic and institutional partners.
6. Objectives:3. Create social cohesion, and an affective connection with the space by
promoting temporary events in the public space.
7. Several levels of interpersonal
interactions:
Backstage - clarifying the sequence of actions
and defining the individual roles in the project.
Intermediary – constructing the relationship and a
shared vocabulary with the public
administration representatives.
Implementation - Finding the best activities that
will respond the interest of the majority of users
and actors present on the territory.
8. Putting together a schedule of, actions and events and taking
into account the different users of the Piazza
Commercial events:
Farmers’ market, christmas
market, other.
Sport events
That don’t require a large budget and /or
are already planned, to be ri-directed in

leaving a trace on the pavement of the piazza. An
invitation to use the public space in many different
ways + encouraging diversity.
19. Breathrough achievements:
1. Turning a part of the piazza into a pedestrian area.
2. Gaining the permits to organize performative events and
visual art actions.
3. Moving towards the recognition of the public place as a
multifunctional space dedicated to social interactions.
Lessons learnt:
1. The change has to be incremental in order to be accepted by
the local community.
2. Time plays an essential role in modifying the perception of a
certain space in two ways: a. short term: understanding the
best moment to propose the actions for different participants
and audience; b. long term: planning ongoing interventions
and monitoring the use of the space.
3. The involvement of the design team in the activities is
essential for understanding the social interactions in space.
