Our stance on the environment
We acknowledge that the nature of our operations can have significant environmental impacts.
Additionally, our operations and growth strategy depend on obtaining and maintaining access to
environmental resources such as land, biodiversity, water and air.
Competition for environmental resources is growing, with climate change amplifying the sensitivities of
our natural systems. Through our Climate Change Position Statement and Water Stewardship
Position Statement, we recognise that BHP has a leadership role in responding to these global
challenges.
We are committed to taking action to reduce our operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,
building the resilience of our business to the risks arising from the physical impacts of climate change
and the transition to a lower carbon economy, and working with others to enhance the global policy
and market response.

Water management
Risk: Contamination and overuse of water resources.
Examples include:
Excessive abstraction of water from local aquifers.
Poor hydrocarbon management and storage resulting in
contamination of water body.
Leaking pipe work.
Controls implemented to manage water usage:
Housekeeping – ensuring pipe work is not leaking
Use of recycled water in processing
Dam wall integrity inspections
Groundwater sampling and monitoring
Water Management Plan

Biodiversity impact
Risk: Flora and Fauna impact and loss through unauthorised
land disturbance
Examples include:
Clearing of vegetation without regulatory approval.
Clearing of vegetation outside approved boundary.
Introduction of non-native flora and fauna.
Controls implemented to prevent unacceptable
biodiversity impact:
Identification and development of buffers for priority species.
Planning areas of clearing.
Weed and seed inspections.
Inspections and audits.
Environmental & Heritage Impact Approval (EHIA)
procedure.

Loss of containment
Risk: Release of substances into the environment, with the potential to cause harm and
contamination of the environment.
Examples include:
Tailing dam failure resulting in impact on flora and fauna
Pipeline failure causing contamination of soil and groundwater
Hydrocarbon/chemical spill causing contamination of soil and groundwater
Controls implemented to prevent loss of containment:
Alarm systems
Bunding
Level and capacity indicators
Frequent inspections and scheduled maintenance
Spill response kits
Emergency response
Note: All spills are treated as an incident and must be fixed immediately

Waste management
Risk:
Inappropriate transport and disposal of waste products impacting the environment
Examples include:
Transport and disposal of waste that breaches regulations i.e. disposal of hazardous waste in the
incorrect facility
Wind blown litter
Poor housekeeping
Controls implemented to manage waste removal:
Use of inert material to cover onsite landfill facilities preventing windblown litter
Waste bins to segregate waste streams
Waste Management Plan
Audits and inspections
Waste Removal Consignment Form (tracking waste from creating to disposal). This form tracks
waste type, quantity / location disposed, date and who has transported the waste

Air Emissions
Potential release of materials from controlled activities impacting the surrounding communities and
the environment
Examples include:
Processing equipment
Transportation
Exposed stockpiles
Controls implemented to manage material emissions:
Baghouse filters
Conveyor covers
Dust suppression
Moisture control of product
Appropriate packaging
Monitoring of emissions during processing
Air Emissions Management Plan

Your responsibility
1. Be aware of environment risks in your area:
• Site risk register
• PRT/Work Instructions
• SDS
2. Follow environmental/risk assessment procedures:
• Take 5
• JSA
• Risk Assessment
3. Implement controls to mitigate environmental risks,
as per Risk Register, Work Instructions or Risk
Assessment.
4. Discuss with the Environment Superintendent if you
have any questions or concern
5. Report environmental hazards and incidents to your
Supervisor.

Spills – 5C’s Spill Response Steps
1. Control – Locate and control the source of the spill.
2. Classify – Consider 5 characteristics of spill to
classify potential harm to environment and
determine spill response.
3. Contain – Contain to prevent further contamination
and potential mitigation – use of spill kits.
4. Clean – Clean up spill with consideration to Safety
Data Sheet. Also consider need for Regulated
Waste Disposal.
5. Check-in – Report to Supervisor.

Food scraps, plastic
wrap, packaging,
PPE, barrier tape.
Paper, cardboard,
aluminium cans,
glass bottles, plastic
bottles and other
products.
Oil, grease, oily rags,
chemicals, paint,
used spill clean up
materials.
Used oil filters.
