Editor's Notes
A Hawaii News Now article in 2015 talked about the rising amounts of bicycle theft in Hawaii within the last few years.
Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London during 2010, decided to invest in a large bike share that would spread across the whole city.
The bikes were mainly put in place to increase the amount of public transport in the city, however they also helped to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. Bike thefts were also thought to decrease because of the security and system of the bike share.
The bikes and stations were designed by an industrial engineer with security and durability in mind. 13,600 bikes were made and put into 839 stations.
To start off, people needed to open an account with the bike share program using a card. The bikes were available for £2 per 24 hours, with the first 30 mins for free. In the first year, they produced hundreds of thousands of pounds in revenue which helped to keep the program going, including covering costs for repair and maintenance. Bikes can be taken out and returned to different stations.
There had only been 10 bikes stolen within the first year, which is extremely low compared to the bike theft levels of personal bikes.
My solution for the rising amounts of bike theft in Hawaii is a bike share program, similar to the one in London.
There are huge amount of people in the urban areas of Hawaii, including tourists and students. Most of these people need to use transport a lot, but don’t have access to a car and may not want to buy a bike. With a bike share program, people would be able to have access to bikes, without the risk of their personal property being stolen.
There are a lot of bike thefts committed by homeless people and others with very low income, so by needing a card and account to access the bikes, there will be less people (who usual steal the bikes) with the access to them, increasing the security.
The bikes would encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for people, without having to commit to buying a bike. Stations could be placed by busy areas such as the Ala Moana Center, Waikiki and near hotels, so that everyone on foot could have close access to the bikes.
Personally I think that this would really help with the theft issues in Hawaii, and also help the government to become more environmentally friendly.
