2. Enteric Fever
febrile illness caused by group of
Salmonella organisms.
Typhoid is the typical form of enteric
fever and is caued by Salmonella
typhi.while simillar but less severe
illness known as paratyphoid is due to
infection with Salmonella paratyphi A,B
or C
6. Pathology
After few days of bacteremia the bacilli
localize mainly in the lymphoid tissues of
small intestine .the typical lesion in the
peyer's patches and follicles (particularly
with in 60cm of ileocecal valve) the peyer's
patches become inflamed at first ,then
ulcerate &ultimately heal , but during the
sequence they may perforate and bleed.
N.B: Incubation period is 10-14 days.
7. Clinical features
First week (invation):-
Onset may be insidious with
headache, bodyache, malaise,sore
throat and anorexia
GIT symptoms:often constipation in
adults but diarheoa and vomiting are
prominent in chidren.

Fever: Step-ladder fever(low in the
morning but gradualy increaed and high
in the night),persist for4-5day then
reaches plateau.
- Cough
- bradycardia
9. Clinical features
Second week (advance):
In untreated case the disease progress
as following:-
High temperature
,splenomegaly,diarrhea,abdominal
distention, skin rash
11. Clinical features
Third week: (decline)
1. Mild case-toxemia abates and gradual
fall of temprature
2. Severe case –increased toxemia
intestinal bleeding, perforation.
Patient may pass into coma and die
