The narrator describes coming home each day to the smiling face of their maid's young son, Daisuke. Though not biologically related, the narrator considers Daisuke and their maid, Pim, as part of their family. The narrator recalls when Daisuke was born, and how his mother Pim initially did not know she was pregnant. Though the pregnancy was high risk, Pim refused to consider abortion. Daisuke was born with a minor physical abnormality requiring surgery, but has grown into a happy, curious four-year old boy who brings the narrator joy. The narrator asserts that Daisuke and Pim are their family, regardless of what others may say.

I can see how hard he is running from living room to the door by listening to his footsteps. As soon as he unlocks the key, I see his bright smile and he says, “I’m home” to me in Japanese. Then I say “You suppose to say welcome back not I’m home”. It is a moment that I could forget stresses that I have and everything I don’t want to think about.<br />But wait a minute. I don’t have any boy in my original family. I only have a sister besides my parents. My father is the only man in my family. But the little boy always enjoys playing games through Monday to Friday even though those games do not belong to him. He is staying at my house through Monday to Friday even though his house is not here. Then who is he?<br />He is very active and curious four-year-old kid who is no difference from other Thai kids. He lives with me, my mother and my maid, Pim. Obviously, he is neither my brother nor my mother’s son. He is my maid’s son, no father. But I count them as my family. He is Thai but he can speak both Thai and Japanese fluently. Plus he has Japanese name, Daisuke. You know Thai people usually don’t use their real name to be called by others throughout their lives. They usually use nickname what everyone, even their family members, to be called. For Daisuke, actually Daichan, is his nickname. My sister and I named him. He is precious for my family.<br />As I’m watching him play games, I remember the time he was born. At first, my maid didn’t know whether she got pregnant or not. She just kept saying that she is gaining weight. So that she took jump rope and jumped every day, also she did pushups and sit ups. Not only that, she did an x-ray examination for physical examination. It is terrible conditions for an unborn baby so when she realized that she got pregnant; she has to expect that he might not be born with good health. My mother looked straight into Pim’s eyes and told her that it is going to be difficult because she has to work for her and her son, but at the same time, she has to take care of her new son all by herself. However, she drops tears onto the back of her hand and says “Abortion is the same as killing and even though there is the risk that he might not be born with good health, it cannot be the reason for killing someone.” Daisuke was born with nothing wrong except his two fingers on his left hand were stuck together. He had surgery for separating his fingers apart so his forefinger is bit shorter so it seems like he has two thumbs, but he is fine. <br />Some people might say that it is strange to live with maid and her son in the same room like real family. Whatever they say, I want to say that this is my family and I love them. I go to my room after I finish reflecting over that.<br />
