The English, tea and protocols; Royalty, "English humor" and manners; MUSIC AND SPORT; Arts and celebrations; Customs that influenced Spanish traditions
3. As in London, the five o'clock tea is an inevitable ritual. It is an
inheritance that the old English conquerors have left in various
parts of the globe and that manifests itself with different
intensities in different places.
When we meet a typical Englishman it is important to take into
account some aspects of his character that will definitely mark the
deal with us. For example, English is much colder and more distant
than, for example, the inhabitants of Latin American towns or
places like Italy or Greece. Respect is fundamental but even more is
adapting to the forms and protocols.
From moments as trivial as tea with tea or even a simple game of
cricket, English makes a whole ceremony. Thus there are certain
ways to say and to do almost anything.
4. Respect for the royal family is very significant in
British society, but not in the religious sense, since
it is not an important pillar in English customs. As
far as the language is concerned, the English used
by the British is clear and clean English, as well as
much more formal than other English speakers.
The manners and habits of typical English may seem
very fine but nevertheless there is a very strong
cultural current that rests on English humor, a mood
at times acid and at times almost black, sometimes
even hurtful. And in this aspect, as in so many
others, English can recognize its defect but is
hardly willing to give or change it. In England if an
appointment is scheduled for three in the
afternoon, our appointment is probably waiting for
us at least five minutes before the appointed time.
Punctuality is almost a matter of honor in this
country of dominant mists and grays.
5. If we think of pop, rock and English heavy metal,
we can easily name at least 10 great exponents of
each style in a heartbeat (The Beatles, Pink Floyd,
Rolling Stones, Queen or The Police to Oasis,
Bowie, Clapton). All of them, great idols of
contemporary music. England has one of the most
powerful selected in world football.
6. As for the celebrations and particular festivities,
it should be noted that in England there are
parties such as Halloween, Christmas, the
"Bonfire Night" or Night of the bonfires, Mayday
or Easter, among others.
In the literary field, such as Shakespeare,
Dickens, Wilde, Byron, Agatha Christie, Austen,
Woolf, Orwell or Tolkien, it is one of the
greatest pillars of universal literature. When we
talk about the art of England, we are simply
talking about perfection.
7. For example, Christmas,Halloween(Víspera
de Todos los Santos)
8. They are very rare and strict, but in art,
literature and sports, I find it very
interesting.
