Early forms of cricket in the 16th century England involved striking balls with clubs. Written evidence from 1301 references a game called 'creag' played by Prince Edward, which may have been an early form of cricket. Cricket evolved into a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players each. One team bats while the other bowls and fields, trying to get the batsmen out to limit runs and win the match. The wicket-keeper stands behind the wickets, wears protective gear, and tries to catch balls not hit by the batsman to get players out.
