Essay
Formerly, when kids were not in school, they spent most of their time wandering the
outdoors, playing games and exploring the surrounding area. However, generations
have changed. We are living in a new millennium where computer game is the
trendiest entertainment among people of different ages. Many people have access to
computers on a wide basis. The addiction to the rivalry of the games makes them the
most typical recreational programs for today's children. Children play computer
games for a long period of time daily. Sometimes, they obsess in the game so much
that they are fully separated from the world they are living in. In fact, there are
significant adverse effects of gaming addiction, such as various health problems,
poor academic performance and impaired social functioning.
First of all, it causes various health problems. The physical symptoms related to an
extensive video game playing include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, backache and vision
problems. The main symptom of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which is one of the most
common physical signs of gaming addiction, is intermittent numbness of the thumb,
index, long and the radial half of the ring finger. In fact, it is caused when the major
nerve between the hand and forearm is pressed or squeezed. Heavy computer
mouse use can cause such inflammation and blister. Next, most addicted children
suffer backache. Children are smaller than adults, some of them may have problems
reaching the keyboard or putting their feet comfortably on the floor since the
computer workstations often are arranged for adult use. This causes them to
experience back pain. Besides, back ache is also caused by lack of movement.
Stiffness and soreness occur when one stays seated in the same position for hours.
In some cases, it can also severely deteriorate into chronic back problems. In
addition, extensive computer game playing may cause a variety of vision problems.
Most computer games require huge commitment to complete any particular game,
forcing the player to concentrate on the computer screen during their playtime.
Inevitably, excessive staring of the screen causes eyestrain, especially if the
computer position and brightness are less than ideal. Overuse of computers also
leads to high risk of early myopia among children.
Secondly, gaming addiction results in poor student performance. Children who
spend most of their time playing computer games fail to work at their optimum level
in studies. Studies have shown that the more time a kid spends playing video games,
the poorer is his performance in school as stated by Anderson & Dill, (2000). They
fail to pay attention in class because they are exhausted from an overnight of
computer game playing. Besides, a study of Argosy University's Minnesota School of
Professional Psychology found that gaming addicts tend to get lower grades, argue a
lot with their teachers, and fight a lot with their friends when compared to the others
who play computer games less often. They routinely skip homework, causing them
to be left behind from the others. In short, academic performance may be negatively
linked to the over-all time contributed playing computer games. Last but not least,
children nowadays who are gaming addicts always isolate or withdraw themselves
from social experiences. They spend too much time indoor playing computer games
rather than physically playing outside. By spending so much time on their game
console or on the computer, children are missing out on their social life as stated by
Hughes E. (2014). They often hide in their rooms—only emerging for the most
pressing necessities and duties. The impact of this segregation can lead to a
breakdown of socialization skills and often a loss in communication. Children
nowadays seldom go out and compete in extracurricular activities, which results in
ineffective social skills development, which hinders them from encountering new
people and getting new friends. Furthermore, their ability to develop and maintain
healthy relationships with people around them is inhibited because instead of talking
to or going out with their loved ones, they spend more time hiding in their room to
play computer games. Sometimes, all they want to talk about is nothing but
computer games, they even lie to cover up the amount of time they spend playing,
and quarrel with people over their excessive gaming. Shortly, computer gaming
adversely affects children’s life.
In conclusion, gaming addiction can be detrimental to health, academic and social
aspect. Playing computer games can and should be an entertaining activity for
everyone to enjoy, but just like everything else, the amount of time one contributes to
it needs to be balanced with personal and social responsibilities. Family members,
especially parents must spread awareness about the harmful impacts of prolonged
gaming before it becomes a game over to their children.
