India's energy consumption grew only 0.8% in fiscal year 2020, much lower than previous years, and is expected to decline 2-7% in fiscal year 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic slowdown. Energy demand fell for five straight months in late 2019 due to sluggish industrial activity and a GDP growth slowdown, but began rising again in January 2020 before plummeting in March when India imposed a nationwide lockdown.
