This document summarizes a group project where students visited the Riverstone Eco Resort. It describes their activities during the trip, which included selecting a site to research, exploring the natural environment, collecting data using their senses, and creating an infographic poster. The group changed their initial site selection after feedback from their lecturer. They researched plants and insects found in their new site, including the leech and fern, sketching and taking notes. Their final work was an infographic poster summarizing what they learned.
Private sector ecotourism from the ground up: the experiences and challenges ...Stuart Gow
Private sector ecotourism from the ground up: the experiences and challenges of an outer island eco-resort in developing a world class tourism and hotel operation". A Case Study.
Stuart Gow, Director, Matava Resort, Kadavu, Fiji www.matava.com
Ecotourism is a simple term to use, but requires more than mere labelling to put into practice. In order to develop a genuine ecotourism product, a commitment to eco-principles needs to be made at the planning stages, to ensure that the business is based on genuine efforts to
establish environmental and social sustainability in the real sense. Eco-tourism is a global industry, and all eco-tourism ventures must be able to stand up against global, not just national, standards.
On its own, commitment to following sustainable environmental and social principles does not ensure the success of a tourism endeavour. There must be adequate demand for the product
if it is to succeed and continue to grow. Marketing efforts must be made to spread awareness of environmental issues and to raise the profile of an ecotourism venture, to build a continuing customer base.
Matava Resort on Kadavu Island was developed to incorporate solar power, organic gardening and other eco-tourism principles from the start of the business. The formation of the “Matava Foundation” enables the resort to process community requests for assistance, as well as managing tourism involvement with community projects. A continuing active marketing plan taps in to the growing demand for planet friendly vacations.
Experiences and challenges met during development of Matava Eco-tourism resort included:
Difficulties:
• Waste management is difficult - recyclables and glass can only be disposed of off
island
• Vagaries of outer island infrastructure makes resort very vulnerable to flight and ferry
schedule variations
• Current power, water and waste systems limit resort scale to a maximum of 15 bures,
and cannot be increased on current systems
• Communications on outer islands are very expensive, VTSat system is the only reliable
internet and phone solution
• There is a confusion in the mainstream tourism market and national psyche about what
constitutes ecotourism – many misinterpret it to mean solely low-end backpacker /
village based tourism

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message

7am in the morning :
- We gathered at Taylor’s University, wait for the
bus.
8:30 am
- Seperated into groups into different buses.
- Depart from Taylor’s University to Riverstone.
7. Departed from the bus and going
into the resort to check in our
room with heavy luggages.
Finally, we arrive
to the resort.
8. Its all about
nature, no
electricity before

9. Outside view of our dorm.
Comments :
Well, we really can’t stand it at first when
we saw the blankets and bed sheets
were full of dust and they were dirty, but
it was solved when we changed them.
Our dorm :
10. Before starting our activities.
After putting
our luggages
into our dorm,
then we
gathered at the
hall . The hall
totally made by
wood and we
just listen to a
short brief by
Ms. D about this
visit.
11. First activity – Selecting site
The first and most important thing of our
project one – Selecting our site.
The site is very important, we need to
find data at the same time for our
infographic poster.
With our lecturers advices , we followed
the staff of the resort to show us the area
of the resort. We are not allowed to get
too far from the resort because to ensure
our safety.
With full of excitement, we began our
exploration.
17. Our first site
This is our first site.
At first we decided to make our site here, but after
we showed to our lecturer Ms Norma, she
suggested us to change to another site.
This is because, our site has to less information to, if
we are going to do it, we have to focus on some
elements until very detailed.
So, we decided to change our site to another spot.
Wow !!
18. Our first site.
It’s a hard decision to make
when we decide to change
our site, which means our
efforts before was wasted but
we have no choice. We just
do it.
19. We are required to :
i. Sketch or draw the layout of our site.
ii. Take photo and video record your site from all angles.
iii. Observe your site and get into everything as a group and
individually concentrate on the natural subject.
iv. Record everything on your site. Take note on the texture,
pattern, color , species of plant, animals and insect, what is it
eating, how it survive, how does it move, features and
characteristic of these natural elements, natural topography,
landscape, and as many natural elements on site.
v. Collect samples.
vi. Record the measurements on our site.
Collecting data
20. The 5 senses
We are required to record the things that excite our
senses:
Sight
I saw the water over there is clear until can see through
the bottom and the water flowing ,many rock, many
type of tree , Insect and some bird. I also saw some
small fish in the water.
c
21. Smell
I smell fresh air and the smell of water. Besides, I also smell
the smell of grass, tree and other. The air is so fresh. Its let
me know need to protect the environment from polluted.
c
22. Hear
I hear the sound of water flowing ,the sound of
bird crow, the sound of insect and the tree
sound make by wind blowing the leaf.
c
23. Feel
I feel more closer to the natural and I feel that the water
is clean, fresh and cool but the sand make my leg so
pain.
c
24. Taste
I taste the taste of water. It is tasteless and
same like normal water. The taste of leaf is so
bitter and taste of sand is a bit bitter.
c
26. Free activity ,rest and doing logo
At 6pm we have free time. We do whatever we want.
At 7 .30 pm, we are having our dinner at down floor.
Then, Ms. D told us to make a logo for our group. So
We made our logo on the lobby.
30. In our second site, we found more
information over there. So we started to do
research about the insect, plant, animal
over there. The most important things is
there are safety more than our first site, it
water not deep, the water flowing not so
fast and easy to entry.
32. Leech
Leeches are the segmented worms that live in a wide rage of
environments including fresh water, salt water and on land . Some
leeches are carnivorous and swallow their prey whole, bot most are
parasitic, latching onto and moving across their hosts with two
sucking discs positioned on either end of their bodies.
• Most of them live in the shallow water, usually slow
moving water
• Some live in the ocean
• Some live in warm moist lands
• Those living in the ocean or river canals will found on
rocks or plants
• Those living on the land will found in rainforests or wet
coastal forests. They usually found clinging to plant or
under rocks
Introduction
Habitat
33. Fern
A fern is any one or more of a group of about
12,000 species of plants belonging to the botanical
group. Ferns first appear in the fossil record 360 million
years ago, but many of the current families and species
did not appear until roughly 145 million years ago.
Ferns are not of major economic importance, but some
are grown or gathered for food, as ornamental plants,
for remediating contaminated soils, and have been the
subject of research for their ability to remove some
chemical pollutants from the air. Some are significant
weeds. They also play a role in mythology, medicine,
and art.
34. Habitat
Some fern are adapted to a dry habitat but most prefer the shady moist
conditions of woodlands. They are particularly abundant in tropical
rainforests and in the modern world there are still thousands of different
species of this ancient and very successful group.
