Resort Hotel Marketing Trends
Increase in online
hotel bookings
(30%-50%)
Increasing hotel’s budget to
chase customers via online
channels can increase
conversion & boost income
Involves
displaying real
time pricing and
room availability
across a mix of
online marketing
channels
Available channels: meta-
search, adwords, email
marketing, business
listings
Hotels mobile
internet and apps
are a big plus
when making
decisions on where
to stay
Increased reliance
on guest reviews,
also to improve
desireability
- 10 -
Millennials coming of age
 The wired generation, growing up in an
environment of connectivity
 Millennials affinity for technology is reshaping
the tourism environment
 Travel deals found in online shopping
sites (Metrodeal, Groupon, Deal grocer,
etc.)
 Availability of flight online promos
 Group travel is seen as attractive and safe way
to explore, meet people
 Marketing strategies should be geared
towards their values and lifestyle : hostels
upgrading and on the rise
 Flashpackers are the more affluent
 Backpackers are those on a shoestring
budget
- 11 -
Social Media engagement is driving
consumer purchasing power
Selfies in various tourist
spots, new place, new food
generates free marketing
Millenials don’t want to
miss out on unique-
shareable experience
Consumer’s purchases
are affected by online
recommendation or
reviews
Social media platforms
should be used
strategically to engage
customers and increase
room occupancy
- 12 -
Gen Xers
 The “Lost Generation”, the generation that experienced so much change
 Grew up in an analog age before internet, and had to scramble in the digital age
 While Millenials can be seen as easier to reach through social media for travel info,
and Boomers through traditional travel agents and tri-media, Gen Xers can be in both
 Gen Xers have more disposable income and can travel in a nicer way, and usually with
children as a family
 Travel periods are based on the vacation schedules of their children, cutting vacation
time, thus they tend to spend more
 Family oriented lodging with amenities and activities, especially for children are
paramount, example would be Shangri-la Mactan
 High end eco lodges for couple time also option for “me time”, example would be
resorts abroad whose design principles are based on using materials onsite, and not
touching the existing natural environment, and usually with less than 50 rooms
- 13 -
Tourism in the Philippines
 Metro Manila is primarily seen as the gateway, but only as a stopover
towards other destinations
 Chaotic, dirty, unsafe
 Top of mind product for tourists are the beaches and resorts, the
culture/people, and natural wonders
 Travel Magazine Conde Nast and CNN have consistently ranked
Palawan and Boracay as among the top beaches of the world
 Thus the government with the private sector are building or
expanding airports that allow direct flights to final destinations
 Caticlan and Puerto Princesa are examples of upcoming
international airports able to accommodate large jets

Large developers have latched on the
Tourism bandwagon
 With income capability matching that of malls, sometimes exceeding,
developers have gone into the lodging and resort business for recurring
income
 Hotels complete the line-up of Large Masterplanned developments,
supporting and feeding the other elements in these townships
 Resorts establish the site as a destination, “putting it on the map”
 As another rental project, along with warehouses, offices and malls, for
possible listing as a REIT
 Hotel operations liven up sluggish condominium projects where developers
have substantial unsold inventory
