COVER STAR FLORAL JEANS
rab your fave pair of jeans and seek
out the sweetest skeins in your
stash – Georgie Emery is back with
the ultimate denim makeover! She’s got two
fabulous, floral patterns for you to try that
will elevate this simple wardrobe staple
(and other denim must-haves like skirts and
jackets) to dizzy new heights using chic spring
colourways, and gorgeously tactile stitches. Did
we mention it’s kind on the purse-strings too?
01
Transfer the designs onto the soluble
stabiliser using a lightbox and a
fabric-safe pen. Cut out the designs and place
them on the jeans in your desired position. We
recommend wearing the jeans and applying
the designs in front of a mirror to guarantee
that you are happy with the placement. The
denim and stabiliser should make the material
sturdy enough to stitch without a hoop,
but you can use one if you prefer. Refer to
the Embroidery Guide on p18-19 for colour
placement throughout.
02
Start by stitching the petals of all the
small roses using Brick Stitch in three
strands of very light pink and dark blue. Fill
the leaves of the rose using Leaf Stitch in three
strands of light green, then stitch the central
veins using Straight Stitch in two strands of
turquoise. Stitch all of the matching elements
featured in the two designs in the same way.
03
Stitch the stem and leaf veins for the
large, rounded leaf sprigs in Stem Stitch
using three strands of moss green. Then, stitch
the rounded leaves using Satin Stitch in two
strands of olive green.
04
Stitch the bluebells in Satin Stitch using
three strands of blue. Add shading with
two strands of light blue over the top, working
Straight Stitches from the base of the flower
towards the middle. With three strands of
dark green, stitch the stems in Backstitch and
fill in the leaves with Split Stitch. Then stitch
the leaf veins using Straight Stitch of two
strands of light green.
05
Using three strands of dark green, fill in
the leaves of the tulip flowers and the
pointed leaf sprigs in Split Stitch. With two
strands of moss green stitch the stems of both
of these elements in Backstitch and stitch
Straight Stitches down the centre of each leaf.
06
Fill the petals of the large flowers in
Chain Stitch using three strands of dark
pink, pink, blue and dark blue. Next, with two
strands of lilac stitch the daisy petals using
Long and Short Stitch.

Then use French Knots in two strands
of golden brown and yellow to stitch the
centre of the flowers.
08
Stitch the vines attached to the large
flowers using two strands of turquoise
by working the leaves in Satin Stitch, and the
stem in Backstitch.
09
Next, with three strands of bright red,
stitch the tulip flower in Satin Stitch and
two strands of light orange. Work the shading by
laying Straight Stitches over the top, starting at
the base of the flower towards the centre.
10
Stitch the petals of the larger rose using
Brick Stitch in pink. Work the leaves in
Brick Stitch using three strands of moss green
and stitch the stem using Stem Stitch in two
strands of dark green.
11
Stitch the small flowers using two
strands of dark pink in Satin Stitch for
the outside ring of petals and fill in the
centres with French Knots using two strands
of very light pink. Using three strands of olive
green stitch the stems to the small flowers in
Backstitch and fill in the leaves in Split Stitch.
12
Once all your stitching is complete, trim
and tidy the back of the embroidery.
Carefully wash away the stabiliser and leave
your jeans to dry before wearing them.
Embroidery artist
Georgie graduated from
Loughborough University
with a BA Honours in
Textiles, for which she
specialised in printed textiles. Her work
combines freehand embroidery techniques
with more traditional stitching methods, to
create colourful, lively botanical designs.
After her studies, life went in a different
direction and for several years Georgie had
little time for her needle and thread. She
has recently reengaged with her love of
the craft and – making up for lost time – is
now rarely seen without her embroidery.
She always carries a project with her in her
handbag, even taking them with her on
some of her recent travels to South Korea,
Borneo and Italy, where she is always on
the lookout for new ideas. Georgie lives
in Gloucestershire, draws her inspiration
from nature and loves to experiment with a
variety of techniques.
