Informi GIS hand-out used in connection with presentation at Esri UC 2014Jens Dalsgaard
The document discusses how integrating GIS with other systems using a common data model, such as the PowerGrid model, can optimize electric utility grid operations by providing a single source of consolidated network data. This allows data to be shared across applications such as DMS, asset management, and planning systems. The example of the Finnish utility Fingrid's project demonstrates integrating GIS with IBM Maximo for asset management and extracting network data in CIM format for transmission planning software.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

IBM hand-out describing highligths of the Fingrid ELVIS solutio
1. The new point-of-reference tool for
Electricity Transmission Asset and Operation Management
Integrating ArcGIS, IBM Maximo and CIM at Finnish TSO Fingrid
In 2010 the Finnish Electricity Transmission System Operator (TSO), Fingrid, initiated “ELVIS” - a
replacement of their entire grid planning, asset and work management IT system landscape. In order to
maintain its position among the most reliable and lean TSO’s, Fingrid needed a robust, flexible and fully
integrated grid, asset and work management system – data should be entered once and distributed as
needed.
The winning solution had ArcGIS as a cornerstone component. The ELVIS project was a rare opportunity
to build a fully coherent solution, combining best in class products, industry standards and stringent
architectural principles. As intended, it serves as a “point-of-reference” system for any modern network
utility.
For a TSO the most fundamental data is the electrical grid model. Based on the PowerGrid data model
ArcGIS provides the one version of the truth – both for the operational grid as well as the future
changes. One model – designed and maintained in ArcGIS and shared across applications.
The integration between ArcGIS and Maximo ensures optimized grid design and maintenance processes
and ensures data consistency throughout the asset life cycle from early grid planning to to the actual
decommisioning. This consist of a Webshere based service integration for replication of features, assets
and relationships between ArcGIS and Maximo combined with the Spatial product (delivered with
Maximo for Utilities) that provides a fully integrated ArcGIS map view of features, assets and work
orders from within Maximo.
Utilizing the Common Information Model (CIM) industry standard, the ArcGIS – PSS®ODMS integration
provides a standard way of delivering GIS grid models to electrical design, analysis and calculation
systems used throughout the industry - ensuring that electrical grid models are maintained centrally and
distributed efficiently using a common format. This allows the grid model to be enriched with loads,
actual switching states etc. and enables the grid model to be shared with the electrical calculations
system (PSS®E) as well as the Protection Management and Calculation components (IPS and CAPE),
again using the CIM standard.
Any transmission or large distribution company looking at ways of optimizing processes across GIS,
Enterprise Asset Management and Electrical Grid Calculation/Design should have a look at the Fingrid
ELVIS solution.
2. The ELVIS solution
The ELVIS project scope – the process view
The ELVIS solution delivers a consolidated grid design,
asset and work management solution. Centered
around the electrical grid model the solution supports
key planning areas such as project management as
well as grid and assest modelling thoughout the asset
lifecycle.
During grid operation ELVIS will support the grid maintenance processes including Outage-, Switching-,
Disturbance-, Vegetation- and Crossing management. Finally - built around the grid model -specialized
processes for relay management and electrical calculations are supported.
Application selection – and the role of the key components
The main driving principle behind the ELVIS
solution is that it should take full advantage of
capabilities offered by standardized packages
available in the market. Individually, the selected
components are all market leaders in their
respective field. Fulfilling their role in the solution,
they perform mutually exclusive roles, each
providing a distinct, core function of the system;
yet collectively exhaustive, with simple and clearly
defined interfaces and virtually no overlap of
functionality between them.
The ELVIS solution consists of 8 standard SW packages. The 3 key components used for managing the
electrical grid model and maintening the grid assets are:
IBM Maximo: The Maximo asset register is used as the repository for physical assets and their
relationship to each other in the location/asset hierarchy. The main functionality of the asset register is
to hold information about the Assets, their specifications, the costs for maintenance, and their
condition. The Location and operating function of the assets is maintained, enabling tracking of
individual assets between locations and functions. This also includes advanced grid value calcucaltions
as well as loadability and Harzardous Voltages calculations.
For work/maintenance management Maximo is used as a way of automating and orchestrating business
processes with relation to managing workorders and the associated resources, service providers,
schedules and cost, while capturing the resulting changes to condition or cost figures at the location or
asset level.
ESRI ArcGIS: ArcGIS supplemented with Schneider Electric ArcFM complements the Maximo asset
register as it used to build and manage the grid model (incl. connectivity) for all network assets, as well
as locating the assets on a map providing geographical as well as schematic views. In addition, ArcGIS
fulfills specific functions in areas of Right of Way Management/Growth clearance, management of
logical telecommunication topology (using FiberManager from Schneider Electric) and analysis of
lightning data for fault localization.
Siemens PTI PSS®ODMS: PSS®ODMS provides a comprehensive network modeling and analysis solution
with an open architecture based on the IEC CIM 61970 standard which facilitates easy integration with
ArcGIS (from where the grid model is obtained) and the surrounding components of the ELVIS solution.
3. ELVIS Integration Principles
Integration is essentially the glue which turns components into a solution. Two key principles applies to
the task of integration:
Packaged integration modules, and
CIM-based SOA
The most complex interfaces, which perform data synchronization between main components, are
based on specific out-of-the-box integration modules. The fact that such integration modules exist
reflects that the solution is made of components which have been integrated before, and significant
resources have been invested by others to harvest the best ways of making that specific point of
integration work seamlessly, before it has been wrapped into a packaged module and sold alongside the
main component. Where existing integration solutions do not exist, and where a looser coupled
interface is desired, integration is based on a Service Oriented Architecture, with the adoption of the IEC
Common Information Model (“CIM”) as the canonical data model.
PowerGrid data model – the home of the electical grid model
In the ELVIS solution the PowerGrid data model represents the central data repository
for creation and management of the electrical grid model. Based on ArcGIS, the
Powergrid data model, developed by Informi GIS, is based on 20+ years of experience
in the electric utility industry using ArcGIS.
Largely inspired by and adapted to the CIM standard, the Powergrid data model and
the ArcGIS solution support consolidated documention of the entire grid - including
Towers, overhead lines, earth wires, spans, cables, Substations, bus bars, bays, circuit
breakers, disconnectors, connectivity….
IBM Maximo dual integration with ArcGIS ensuring Advanced Work and Asset Management
IBM has implemented a two-way integration between ArcGIS and Maximo allowing needed data to flow
from ArcGIS to Maximo - and vice versa. When new grid features are designed in ArcGIS the integration
ensures correct generation of locations and hierarchical relationships in Maximo. And when asset data is
created or updated in Maximo the integration makes it available in GIS ensuring that date entry happens
once and that data consistency is maintained thoughout the system.
Furthermore, the Maximo Spatial integration package is
implemented which allows an ArcGIS layer based geographical
display of locations, assets and the location of work to be
carried out as well as enable spatial searches for assets,
locations and for work.
GIS-PSS®ODMS Integration - Extracting Data Using the CIM
Standard
In the ELVIS solution grid data is extracted from ArcGIS and the
PowerGrid data model to CIM XML by a tool developed by IBM
handling the complex task of aligning different models. This CIM
XML is subsequently imported into PSS®ODMS from where the
model is further enriched, used for transmission network planning
and analysis and exchanged with surrounding systems.
