What is COMMON GOOD?
In our democracy, all citizens need to work
together to do good things for the whole
  community.
For example, people pay taxes so
everyone can go to schools, so
  everyone can be protected by
  fire fighters, and so everyone
  can enjoy parks and public
  pools.
At school, you have rules that protect
everyone, like returning books to the
library, and no throwing food at
                 lunch.

We all do many things each day to
            help others.
Take a look at this example…

The Flamingo family loves to take bubble baths in the river.
They do not know that their soap is making the water dirty
for others who must drink it.
The Frogs and Beavers need to drink
the water from the river. They ask for
     help from the government.
The man from the government talks
to the Flamingoes about keeping the
      water clean for everyone.
The Flamingos are bathing in a new
bath tub. They are making sure that
the water is clean for others to drink.

Take a look at these park rules:
                       Answer these
                    questions by clicking
                     the notepad at the
                           bottom:
                  Why does a park need
                    this rule?
                  Are the other rules
                    fair?
                  What do you think
                    happens if the park
                    rules are broken?
Rules and laws are made for the well-
being of people and the environment

Think about it

A stream like
this…
Will become this if people don’t follow
         the rule to not litter
We follow road laws
to keep each other and animals safe
Communities get together to
decide what rules are the best for
         us to follow.
Then, people like police officers are
hired to help make sure everyone
          follows the laws.
Now it’s your turn to decide which
rules and laws are important to a
       community or place!

Here are some actual rules used at an
indoor water park. How do your rules
                compare?
• We suggest removing any loose jewelry before entering the water.
• Please shower before entering the water and wash your hands after using
  the restrooms.
• All guests who want to enjoy the water slides must be 42 inches or taller.
• Spitting or spouting water from your mouth is not permitted. Please do
not chew gum or tobacco in the waterpark.
• Running in the water or on the deck area is not permitted.
• Hard plastic and glass containers are not allowed in the waterpark.
• Please follow all waterpark rules or may result in your dismissal from the
  waterpark

Welcome to Boat Rentals!
One rule people must follow when they rent a boat is :
PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE WILDLIFE WHILE YOU ARE
BOATING
Why does this rule promote COMMON GOOD for people and
animals visiting the park?
Click on the picture next to the description that best fits.

Feeding wildlife food humans eat could
                      make the animals sick.

Wildlife in the park only like to eat food
                      they cook themselves
Ready for a swim?
One rule people must follow when they go for a swim is :
ONLY SWIM IN DESIGNATED AREAS
Why does this rule promote COMMON GOOD for people and
animals visiting the park?
Click on the picture next to the description that best fits.

Swimming in other areas is not
                                    safe for people or animals.

                                  This rule doesn’t promote common
good. We can do what we want!
Fishing safety
One rule people must follow when they are fishing is :
UNLESS YOU HAVE A PERMIT, ALL FISH MUST BE PUT BACK IN
THE LAKE
Why does this rule promote COMMON GOOD for people and
animals visiting the park?
Click on the picture next to the description that best fits.

There are plenty of fish for me to keep, I
                           don’t need a permit

A permit will help control the population
of fish in the lake and monitor illegal
                           fishing
What should bikers know?
One rule people must follow when they are biking is :
BIKERS SHOULD STAY ON DESIGNATED TRAILS
Why does this rule promote COMMON GOOD for people and
animals visiting the park?
Click on the picture next to the description that best fits.

Biking on designated trails helps not disrupt the
plant and animal life in the park. It also helps keep
bikers safe by staying in areas appropriate for bikes
                           to travel

Park officials don’t want bikers to stray from the
path because they are boring and don’t like people
                           to have adventures.
GREAT JOB!!!
