First steps towards an integrated offshore grid / Martin Ars / 12-10-2015Martin Ars
Key note speech at Navingo Offshore Wind at the Amsterdam RAI on October 12 2015.
Making an integrated offshore grid can be realized by taking the right steps. And it should be started today. Studies show that major cost savings for society are achievable by installing an international grid using offshore wind farms as connection points. In this presentation I show how these cost savings can be achieved and the first steps to get there.
Main take away: National Governments should start making offshore interconnection an integral part of offshore wind policy by analyzing potential connections for all windfarms in development. The feasible options should then be taken up as (pilot) projects for realization.

Integrated, adaptable and affordable packages for the deep renovation of buil...Leonardo ENERGY
Integrated, adaptable and affordable packages for the deep renovation of buildings
European Union fixed ambitious objectives in terms of building renovation. To reach them, market actors are searching for innovative solutions, providing a higher integration and adaptation to different situations in European countries. The refurbishment packages will also set oneself apart from other solutions if they succeed to have controlled budget.
The EU H2020 project STUNNING (SusTainable bUsiNess models for the deep reNovation of buIldiNGs) has the goal to promote successful and innovative building renovation packages and business models around a virtual and collaborative knowledge sharing platform: the STUNNING Renovation Hub, so as to accelerate their adoption.
After a short introduction of the STUNNING project by Karine Laffont and Nicolas Peraudeau from DOWEL Management (coordinators), three speakers from European projects will present their solutions.
Presentation on the Value and Impact of Social Science Data Archives and the CESSDA SaW Toolkit
A set of 38 slides used for the Focus Group Cost-Benefit Funding Advocacy Program (Task 4.6) session at the CESSDA Saw Workshop in The Hague 16/17 June 2016.
This was an interactive focus group repeated over two parallel sessions. It was aimed at European social science data archive staff with responsibility for bidding for funding or promotion and advocacy of the archive to key stakeholders.
The presentation covers some of the key ideas on how the CESSDA Saw funding advocacy toolkit will be structured, its components, and key facts and approaches it will include.
We expect the cost-benefit funding advocacy toolkit under development to support the negotiation with ministries and funding organisations across Europe.
The results of the toolkit user requirements survey with responses from 24 European social science archives were presented and discussed, together with suggested approaches and content for the toolkit. 22 people attended the two sessions overall, representing a mix of countries at different stages on the development path for social science archives (none, new/emerging, mature). There was strong interest and support for the emerging toolkit together with open discussion of how it can be applied in the specific political and administrative context of different European countries.
The slide set presented here is an extended version including a number of hidden background/ reference slides not used in the presentation. The focus group is one of a series guiding further development of the toolkit and its adoption being given to either: (a) social science data archive staff or (b) their key stakeholders (senior management in their universities, research councils and academies, funding ministries, national statistics offices, research users and depositors).
CESSDA is the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives. The CESSDA SaW project “Strengthening and widening the European infrastructure for social science data archives” is funded by the European Commission as part of its Horizon2020 programme.
Best practices to address non-technical barriers to the renovation of EU buil...Leonardo ENERGY
The annual rate of home and commercial building renovation is well under the 3% required to achieve European climate and energy goals. There is a need to accelerate investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions to boost cost-effective building renovation benefiting all Europeans.
To achieve these ambitious objectives, European projects identified the main barriers (financial, technical, legal…) to the renovation of the EU building stocks. After this stage, projects have to adapt the best practices, or imagine business models to face these issues.
Smart Neighborhoods speak EEBUS.
The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate how EEBUS enables an industrial approach for residential energy management by providing standardized device communication and energy management use cases. Hence, a lock-in into proprietary manufacturer specific communication can be avoided. This enables cost effective scalability, replication, and commissioning of energy management solutions at target markets.
EEBUS provides transparency and access to all energy relevant devices and thus transforms them into flexible resources for demand response. Single households become the core elements of Smart Neighborhoods and consequently of Smart Grids. The continuously evolving technology is open to further use cases and therefore facilitates the integration of other domains to the REnnovates technical platform – such as E-Mobility which is already managed through EEBUS or grid interaction.
Europe is on its way to generate and make use of more data than ever. The project PrepDSpace4Mobility aims at contributing to the development of the common European mobility data space by supporting the creation of a technical infrastructure that will facilitate easy, cross-border access to key data for both passengers and freight. Given the enormous potential of data and digital technologies, the project is expected to have a positive impact on European competitiveness, society, and the environment.
Workshop gathered suppliers and users of data, relevant research institutes, associations, initiatives, politics, as well as technology and service providers in data spaces to ensure appropriate representation.
We had successful workshop, and greatly appreciate your practical field expertise and interactive contributions.
